A decent machine doesn't cost that much. You should go for a new one while keeping the same keyboard, screen, anything other than the computer itself, it will cost less that buying everything. I think you can find a decent machine for $500 nowadays, if not build one for that much.

In that menu (you can usually go there by tapping F8 (well, most computers, since some computers the it's another F key), was there the option "start with last good known configuration"? If it is there, try it. And have you tried the solution I gave you in my previous post?

This looks like a driver problem. If you can, go to your computer manufacturer's website (gateway here) and with your model number, find it on their tech support section and find the chipset driver for your computer. Download and install. This process should be fast enough, but the download can be done on another computer then brought the the problematic computer with cd or usb key or w/e. Way to find the model of the computer, usually it's written on the computer itself, but if not, it might be writen on the my computer properties (not every installations shows this though, let's hope yours does). Let's hope he didn't pass if he's that computer illiterate after a 2 years course.

I have never taken a seasonal flu vaccination, because I don't think it's a good thing to do. We get a different strain of flu every year, why take a vaccine for them. Any other vaccines are fine with me. H1N1, I'm not sure as I've never had a flu shot and that I never needed any. My brother had the H1N1 and was only able to stay in the bed for around 4 days, but after that, the flu is gone, unlike the regular flu, that actually kills way more than h1n1. This is just a repeat of the bird flu scare, of all the years we heard of it, the number of deaths by regular flu in one year still outnumbers it by quite a lot.

Graphics should be Nvidia or Ati, since intel graphic accelerators are crap enough to not be able to run full rshd. And 8GB HD, do you mean 80GB HD? since no one runs on 8GB anymore, most people run on 320 or 500GB nowadays.

Hp has solved that overheating problem one or two years ago, so it shouldn't be a problem here, and your crashes were probably caused by said overheating. There's also Acer, they cost less and are made with cheaper components, but they work well and last long. I'm sticking with my don't go with Dell, I see too many Dells having problems monthly.

I was going to tell you to go to cmd and type some command, but currently I cant remember it, so I'll have to think about it today. As for a hard drive brand, that's why I never go with Maxtor, the lifespan of those hard drives tend to be very short. When you are able to get your files back, if you are able to, you should replace it with a Western Digital or Seagate hard drive. I wouldn't go out of those two brands. Personally all my hard drives are Western Digital and after 8 years, there still hasn't been a hard drive failure on any of them. (well first of them is 8 years old, but most of them are around 3-4 years old)

I suggest against going with Dell, it might break early in its life. I also have a friend that some software stopped working after the college put stuff on it for classes, which didn't happen with my computer. Go with an Asus or an HP instead.

I know, that is why I wasn't making a big deal out of it. I just like to see DVI because many monitors are still without HDMI. Actually, around where I live, most of the screens you find in stores do have an HDMI port on them, almost every screen.

HDMI is better than DVI, since it's also HD and has sound, so if he ever wants to plug it to the tv or something to watch a movie in HD or something, he can do it. Processor and video card are quite good for most games, maybe not highest settings for some, but that's a good video card.

Killing lsass, spools and svcs' (if you mean svchost) is not something to do. They are important to the working of Windows.

Looks like there are more and more websites with this. I never had seen this for myself, until yesterday and today, which were in google ads that I mistakenly clicked on poorly made websites. Fortunately this doesn't work in Vista (or was it because I clicked the "do not execute scripts from this page" on the pop-up the site makes first on Opera).

basically i believe 64-bit can use more RAM than 32-bit but with 32-bit you can still reserve RAM to put on your integrated graphics, 32-bit can only handle 2 gigs of RAM 64-bit can handle 4 gigs, or up possibly, and while 64-bit is stronger, it has some compatibility problems so 32-bit is more convenient, it won't run your system to maximum power. Just my noob guess. You're quite wrong there. 32bit takes up to ~3.25GB of RAM, and 64bit can take up to huge numbers of RAM, which I will not name here since I don't remember exaclty, but it takes more RAM than we will ever need in a while. About the compatibility, since Vista, most 32bit programs do work on 64bit Windows. I've personnally never hit a compatiblity problem and am Running Windows Vista x64 as well as Windows 7 x64.

wkw, just saying, you should tell them to use notepad++, frontpage adds a lot of garbage to your code apparently. Games on calcs? is it that bad now? I've never seen a calc that had games on it, much less a graphing calculator. I was on the old program though, and used a normal calculator (like the windows calc on scientific gui) and used it with sheets of paper. That was the way to do it, do all what you can without the calc, and when you're stuck, it's a way to help you. It's also a way to make sure your answer is right. I believe maths should stay right until college, as it is very important, there's maths everywhere, no matter the job you will have in the future.

About that Asus discussion, I've never had any trouble with builds with Asus motherboards, and find them to be one of the best brands out there for motherboards. I say like Nadril too about the antivirus, Microsoft security essentials looks like a very good antivirus on first view, I'm trying it on the laptop and will probably return sometime in the futur saying what I think of it. Security essentials looks like the best antivirus software Ms ever made.
