The key element that you forgot in your [baseless] rant is that this is Jagex's game. Typically, dictators take over things that aren't theirs, but if you're only levying down authority on something that belongs to you anyway, it can't be called being a dictator. So get your definitions right. This ain't no Democracy; this is their game. If you don't like it, the exit is to your right.

Scam? I really dont know
If you can't remember making a YouTube video with whatever in it, chances are it's a huge fake/scam.

New Years' Eve Drop Party [OVER]
Well, the event's all said and done, and I'm glad that some members of Tip came out to participate. Sorry about all the other "noob" players being there, but I guess that really couldn't be helped. I personally don't have any pictures on me, but if you have some, go ahead and post.

An Inconvenient Truth: High Alching Yew Longs Gone?
The way I figure it, Fletching's finally found its skill trade-off point. You either make the Natures, spin the flax, or cut your own Yew logs, or a combination of the three -- either way, it's not profitable to just buy out that skill anymore. This is true in processing skills, such as Smithing and Herblore. You could theoretically buy these skills out, but you would lose a huge chunk of cash over time. It's always been around though, and only recently has it begun to affect the tens of thousands of Fletchers (or those with that goal). Time to make the trade-off, so what will it be? Flax, Yew or Nature?

Computer playing up - Real Problem
It could very well be a memory error, or it could be a hard disk error. Windows uses something like a "swap" partition to give the computer more virtual memory (which, of course, it at the speed and mercy of the hard disk alone). How full is your hard disk? Most problems like that occurring usually happen when people use up more than 90% of their hard disk.

A fear of the future - controversial updates
[/hide] RWT is definately not dead. There still exists two forms of RWT that are going on as we speak: 1. Account trading; which is still popular on some black markets. 2. Account lending; a method in which the goldbuyer lends his password to the goldseller. The goldseller then logs on to his account and levels the desired stats or makes the desired money in exchange for real world money. Ah, remember that Jagex went for the jugular here. Account trading has been going on for years now, but it's lost its allure (drop trading large sums of cash to the account, having tons of valuables on the account), and is at a much higher risk of being caught. Same with account lending. Even if someone is desperate enough to throw away hundreds of hours by buying some levels, the risk of being caught is much, much higher than if someone just died to something in the Wilderness.

New computer/Hard drive issue
Oh, so it's a SATA drive then. Untick the part where you said you had set it to "IDE", since that would not let it work at all. Do that and get back ASAP.
-
New computer/Hard drive issue
Using the install disk/downloading drivers for it would be kind of like putting gas in a car without an engine or tank. After all, where do you think those drivers are stored? :D One thing that I can't understand is what brand of drive you're using. Maxtor, Seagate, Western Digital? Let me know what you're using out there, so then I could try to point you in the right direction.

A fear of the future - controversial updates
something like that except i dont like the chainsaw to carrot analogy i think the original RWT battle was necessary however jagex couldve fought it the right way and upped their security, why should we suffer because jagex is too cheap to pay for gameguard or another game security company? instead they update the game and affect most players of rs (in some way) with a silly update This analagy fits better: Jagex is more like america during WWII they declared war after they were attacked and then instead of finishing a war with troops they throw in a nuke after that nuke as been thrown anything is possible, after a nuke has been thrown im not surprised to see another (or at least a few chainsaws here and there) after all the second nuke to be launched (irl or rs will never be as necessary as the first) Nobody knows the right way to fight a war until it's over. The nuke analogy also fails horrendously.* Perhaps you could use a lesson in history. What do you mean by "up their security"? Do you have any idea of the amount of security already in place physically and logically? [Or do you know anything about computer security...if you don't I'd be wasting my time.] The best and most effective way to stop this scum would definitely have been to update the game in such a way that their business is virtually inoperable. It's like you're a child, or some teenager that refuses to believe the truth. Do you understand the gravity of the entire thing with RWT? Because I genuinely don't think you do. [hide=*]Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor first, and what we did was launch a counteroffensive in the Pacific. The very idea of sending in troops to occupy the islands of Japan was quite improbable; these guys were hardcore warriors that would sooner die than give you an inch of turf. So, after Roosevelt passed on, Truman gave them their choice: either surrender or face destruction unlike any had seen before. They didn't surrender, so they were nuked - twice. It isn't like [the US] overreacted. Sending in at least 500,000 troops to occupy this nation just could not be done. It was with a heavy heart that such a decision was made, but the thing is that it was the only logical course of action. I'm sure that when you become an adult and can see the true effect wars have on people, you'd understand.[/hide]

A fear of the future - controversial updates
Let's sum up here. You basically thing that Jagex is led by a fearless, power hungry tyrant with a pair of twenty-sided dice in his hands, and whichever numbers he rolls, he makes judgment calls based off of that. Let me pull the wool from over your eyes. Think about it -- RWT is dead. Jagex didn't need to go for the heart of the beast, just the jugular vein would do. Most ways of RWT were rather devious -- I'd have never thought to check the Party Room -- but now that they're gone, what's left to do practically? Accounts are traceable, and don't think that China doesn't have its own special Class A-type IP address range (because they do). Now think about this. RWT was a serious threat to the game. Any autotyper can be slapped with a mute for 24 hours or placed on the ignore list. Why would you think that Jagex would use a chainsaw to cut a carrot? [No, don't give me anything about RWT. That was a serious enough issue to merit what they did.]

RWT:I don't really care
Congratulations for representing the 1% of players online who aren't overly "affected" by RWT, and being melded into the 85% of players that don't understand the seriousness of it. You don't care because you don't understand how it affects you or me. That's all. If you had an inkling of understanding on this subject, you wouldn't have posted it.

Decline in the community, such a shame really.
You say there's a decline in the community, eh...? Well tell me this, what the heck does this topic do to "save" the community? Isn't this the same kind of thing you dislike? If you want intelligent discussions, provoke them. If you want to hear less whiners, ignore them. If you want the community to improve its "maturity", then take the first step. Just making a post and saying that this place has declined doesn't do anything for anyone. People aren't magical enough to just "get the point" from someone's critical post.

Which Linux distro should I use?

new laptop
Browsing the Internet and playing RuneScape? That's it? Whatever happened to homework, movies, video games, music, homework... Anyway, Dell has some decent options on a laptop, but this is a basic one (and configured with XP is a good thing). If you're interested, System76 offers some latptops preloaded with a type of Linux OS. In truth, if you haven't dealt with the *nix world, then I wouldn't recommend it. HP has some nice deals as well, this one in particular would be something that I'd probably pick up.

Which Linux distro should I use?
Dunno about you, Nad, but Ubuntu is jut too easy for me. I had to switch to Fedora 8 (FTW) to get breathing agasin. I also use Vista, if you're wondering. Just a random fact, Mac OS X does run on Vista, if you do some tweaking... My friend and I are on a quest to run it on a PC. An RL quest. Meh, I figured the goal of an OS generally was to be as user friendly as possible while giving plenty of power to the user if they want, along with good security. Is Ubuntu limiting at all in what you can do in it? Also, you say you can run Mac OS X on vista... that doesn't make any sense. You don't run an OS on another OS, you would mean to say probably that you can get it to work with your hardware. (or, perhaps, you can emulate it through vista but I don't know if that is possible). The only thing that I can think that Ubuntu limits to you is the "root" user account. Of course, if you just use the "sudo" command with your own password in that OS, you won't really need it. By the by, you ever hear of virtualization? With that, I can run Linux in XP, or XP in Linux (or anything I really choose in any other OS, depending on the emulation program).

Plenty of members are leaving...what about NEW members?
That doesn't really make sense to me because there's not a limit on how many members RS can have. Your forearm is only ye big, but RS is (potentially) unlimited. Let's take it back to Biology class, shall we? The amount of cells on your forearm produce a huge enough number to justify the parallel.

Who had a problem with bots?
To those that cry out for the old RS/think PKing is dead: You can either accept that the change was in our best interests, or you cannot. If you can, then you're going about merrily in your bot-free game; if you cannot, you're grumbling under your breath about how stupid or careless Jagex was with this update. Trust me when I tell you that ignorance is inexcusable when we talk of a subject this controversial. I'm wondering to myself, did anyone who disagrees with this update actually read the Development Diary? Did they take the time to understand Jagex's side in this issue before they posted? Jagex did what they did for a very good reason. Not only did it cut down on a ton of fraudulent credit-card transfers, it cut down on other people actually profiting off of something that was never theirs in the first place. They also took a long time to think about it -- since about 2006, when the epidemic really hit, and when players (even on these forums!) began to complain about the bot problem. Changing the way we do Player vs Player and PKing was not a decision that was made on a whim! Changing trades and drops wasn't made on a whim either! You have to realize that some decisions are easy and popular, and others aren't so easy and very unpopular. So don't take it so hard that you lost your precious "wilderness". You still have Bounty Hunter. Yes I know it's no substitute, but if you work with Jagex on the issue instead of bashing them, it'll come close to what you remember. Now, if you wanna sit there and whine about it like some brat, please, do that in the privacy of your own home.

Is it just me? Or has the word "noob" finally destroyed?
I'll take it, smithing levels are expensive! Okay, for you I'll give you tiles instead. :D [On-topic]: The reason I'm think it's just your imagination is because of your surroundings. A lot of the children that act like total jerks are too busy begging their parents to let them open their Christmas presents, so we catch a break for a few hours. Oh, happy holidays.

Which Linux distro should I use?
Ooh, yeah, another person coming to the *nix side! /me hands him a cookie With those specs, you have rather decent options. On the RPM side, you could go with Fedora 8. It's a nice OS if you can deal with yum. On the Debian side, you can choose between Ubuntu (I've been using it for about two years and it's fantastic), or you can pick Gentoo. Both have excellent hardware support and are quick to learn for newbies to the OS. You also might want to consider Damn Small Linux, something designed for a business-card disk that makes old computers run like champions. I haven't used it personally, but I do know people that have reported decent success with it. Let us know what distro you chose and how well it's running.
-
Is it just me? Or has the word "noob" finally destroyed?
I think it's just you. Stand around freeplay (anywhere) for about five minutes and you'll hear it at least twenty times. (And no, Miniclip isn't to blame for this. Next person that says it is without proof needs to get coal in their stocking.)

What do you mean by no lifer?
"No-lifer"? Who the hell are we to judge someone based on their lifestyle? The way I see it, if someone calls someone else a no-lifer, it's really none of their damn business (and they just want the resources said person is using for themselves). If you have ever called someone a no-lifer, take a good hard look at your own playing style. Seriously though, it's no one's damn business what any high-ranked player does with their free time. That's their free time. If you're so concerned with their life and their time online, then you probably need to spend less time online as well.

Who had a problem with bots?
here is an example of what jagex did, bots cut yew logs, which are then sold and fletched into longs, which are then sold and alched by pures, now, there is a small supply of logs, fletchers are worse off, and there arent really any pures left so alching doesnt work. Does that sound like a solution? So what's stopping you from picking up a hatchet and getting more yew logs yourself? Honestly, the things that bots did meant we could do them as well, just we weren't nearly as motivated. Now that they're gone and prices for raw goods has climbed (Yew logs being one example), we find ourselves at a paradox: we can either regret that the bots are gone and wish that Jagex hasn't made those changes, or we could pick up the same tools available to us and get to work. It's something that's just as easily acquired by yourself. Is it really that hard to cut Yew for a day?

A solution to the PKing problem.
Restoring the Wilderness back to what it was would have meant tons of little loopholes and exploits (such as item purchases instead of cash). Face it. The lesser of two evils has been chosen. If you were one of these PKers that were put out because it was your so-called 'profession', time to get a new gig.

Who had a problem with bots?
So, what are you trying to say? Are you saying that fake credit cards and profit off a game that wasn't theirs isn't hurting anyone? You can look at this from two angles: the angle of the player that was oblivious to the entire scenario, or from the side of Jagex (which is outlined in all of the Dev Diaries). You cannot sit there and tell me that you genuinely believed that these bots weren't hurting anyone, because they were -- they cheapened the manual efforts of every skiller out there, and it wasn't like we could try the same and get away with it, either. The way I see it, the PvP has changed, and isn't dead. Those that feel it was killed can either adapt to the new way to duel and PK (Bounty Hunter), or they can just go. The people on the RSoF might have their heads on right after all...I'd vote for option 2 as well. I'd rather a game without those kinds of scum, and if it takes the whiny players that are complacent with their one source of fun out of it, then that's two birds with one stone.
