Dear person who hacked me...
[hide] I could be considered a hacker. I am extremely knowledgeable about computers, knowledgeable about protocols, how to get into certain systems, and I'm a nice guy. I even have a life. How could I be considered an idiot? I don't take the time to "hack" RuneScape accounts, nor do I take the time to consider it. (All you'd learn from social engineering is that people are careless with their passwords, and that's common knowledge.) What I do "hack" is either the Linux kernel, to see if I can get more out of it. (Compiling kernels from source...that'll eat up a weekend for ya.) Learn the definition of a hacker before you call them "antisocial idiots" please. [in case you're curious, I'm referring to definition 3.] 'Hacker' is a broad term. As you may notice, their is more than one definition on that sheet.. I was refering to the scum that 'hacks' runescape accounts for fun or creates macroers to 'improve their Java skills'.(although that technically isn't a hacker thing, but you get my point.) [/hide] I'm not mad at you. I'm just glad you realize that there is more than one kind of 'hacker'.

?ÃÆââ¬Å¡ÃâÃ¿?ÃÆââ¬Å¡ÃâÃ¿?ÃÆââ¬Å¡ÃâÃ¿ Why Jagex Killed Staking ?ÃÆââ¬Å
Qeltar, you should probably reread what you've quoted. I want some hard evidence that curbing a teen gambling addiction (or any other wild theory) could be another cause. Doubting them just because you can't forgive them for allowing (then disallowing) luring is not only unwise, it's childish. I have no reason not to give them the benefit of the doubt in this case. I can't prove that Jagex really wanted to stop 'Scapers from a staking/gambling addiction (since, in my years of playing I haven't seen it mentioned ONCE on RuneScape.com), so I have to take their word for it. I may distrust their word, but I can't find any evidence to tell me otherwise. Oh, and in regards to you telling me that I accepted what they told me, hook line and sinker -- you'd better check yourself, Pot. Find the true reasons before you find a reason to question my logic.

Grand Exchange Your Pros and Cons
Pro: Finally able to buy and sell products that would take hours or days to get rid of. Con: a) Every third person who has a degree in Econ thinks they can dissect it to a finer point, and complain about it. B) Every other third person makes a topic about it.

Even though this article is a generalization of someone's own mind? Even though this object could be completely off, your willing to listen to it, and call it the truth? Yes, your not contradicting yourself, good job. I guess you didn't get my play on words. What I meant (and thought I clarified at the bottom) was that people are just willing to listen to whatever someone else's opinion is and believe that to be the true reasoning behind what Jagex did. I'm putting this quote in my signature. Lordkrohn, PM me if you don't mind me using your name in it.

Listen. You all fail, epically. None of you are really satisfied with the answer that they got from Jagex, so you turned to a THIRD PARTY [who has no proof, mind you; it's just believable opinion] and you feel that this answer better justifies the stance that Jagex took. Let me tell you all something. You're wrong. I can't deny that Jagex's limit on staking is a bit constrained, but I don't have the evidence to disprove their claims or doubt their true motive. So until any of you simpletons can provide real proof from someone from Jagex that their motive was to kill staking once and for all, don't say a damn thing about their "true" motive. You can't prove it, so stop blowin' hot air around.

Java experiment
I've wanted to tinker with DSL for so long, but I've never got around to it :o Anyway, in direct answer to your question, try this: 1. Go to the Java website 2. Download the Linux self-extracting file (since you're on a Debian-based *nix OS, RPM will not help). 3. Follow the instructions provided. Make sure you have root access, or can promote yourself temporarily to superuser. Run into any problems, let me know; I'll be downloading DSL myself and messing around with it later...

Turns out that the public just won't believe the truth even when it's given to them in plain English. [You can't accept what Jagex said, so you're willing to listen to any cockamamie theory that anyone else has. Absolutely pathetic.]

Sorry, Comrade, but Price Controls Don¢¢âš¬¢âž¢t Work
Okay, so where do I start with this? Even if this article is well-written, it's come out too soon -- you don't have enough information to accuse Jagex of "controlling" prices. Consider selling or buying those items in a crowded server, such as World 1, 2, or 6. I've noted, that while it takes a while to trade with the Grand Exchange, the very idea that I can walk away from the trading grounds and go do something fun makes up for that. I can let them sit in there for as long as I like. Since members get six slots, and that one item isn't selling, and I need to sell or buy something else, I move on to the next slot. No one told you to sit there and wait for your stuff to sell. That's fallacy #1.

A "Laizer Faire" economy?
Mon ami, c'est "laissez-faire". Quel a tu parlais Fran̮̤̉̉ais? In truth, laissez-faire is a devil-may-care attitude towards it; and I don't think that Jagex isn't sitting on their hands without giving a care about the marketplace. But I also don't think they're controlling the market either.

Runescape the new cheap knock off of wow?
I've never played WoW, so correct me if I'm wrong [someone else], but I do believe that the Duel Arena was created to replace duel-anywhere from Classic, ergo it was in the beta.
-
Runescape the new cheap knock off of wow?
According to the World of Warcraft website, the game is only three years old. According to RuneScape's copyrights, the game is eight years old. Let's go ahead and adjust that number to when the RS2 beta came out, so December 2003. RS[2] - 4 years old; WoW - 3 years old. Who's copying who?!
-
Your limits, or mine?
In many cases, it's a matter of the pot calling the kettle black. The hell's the point? People fail to realize that someone's life is their choice, and whether or not they choose to play a game either all the time, sometimes or not at all is none of their damn business. I don't care what anyone says about anyone else's playing habits. Nobody asked you your opinion on their life, so keep it to yourself.

All I'm sorry for is that you left your computer in that kind of insecure state, and that you had to post about it. I'm sorry you didn't put up a decent firewall or had some decent AV, and this is the end result. I'm sorry that you didn't learn that you needed to be secure on the Internet until it was too late -- and I'm sorry that you had to quit the game over it. Sure, it was time and effort, but if/when you pick another online game up, devote a tenth of that time into beefing up your computer. If you don't learn from your mistakes, you're bound to repeat them.

Has Jagex lied to us?
There is one piece of information that is unique to your computer. It is called your MAC address. No two network devices have the same MAC address. However, in order to be able to do this you would somehow need to register RS against this address. With current Java technology this is impossible to do, although some software suppliers that do not use Java do have a system for registering against MAC addresses. Said uniqueness can actually be forged. All it takes is either a quick trip through the OS and tinkering with the network settings, OR (if you're on a Windows box) a quick look at the BIOS settings, and you could probably edit it from there, too. Here's a MAC address: 00:17:3f:xx:xx:xx (the first three pairs are like the network card's signature, manufacturer, etc). It's quite easy for someone to tinker around for a half hour or look up a guide online to change that to something else. Java doesn't need the technology. It's in the freaking MAC layer of the OSI model, a schema (not a standard) that computers follow when transmitting data between one another. All you'd need is a packet sniffer and you'd have your MAC addresses.

Tip.it Times Presents: Change!
It's an interesting read. The central point is that all things change; either adapt or perish. Pretty wordy, but otherwise good.

Good and the worst updates from 2007?
C'mon, the year isn't over yet. Wait until December and maybe this will merit some more discussion. On topic, I liked the PC update, the ditch, and the Duel Arena update. The quests didn't seem so pointless to me either; they sure were a lot fewer of them than last year, though. :D
-
Has Jagex lied to us?
Yes, those methods are still in use, and yes those methods do work. You could think of the methods as either fingerprint or DNA forensics, and the updates to further stop it from happening as an identification card or even a retina scan. IP banning tens of millions of computers is like trying to use 10 pieces of wood to dam up Niagara Falls.

Grand Exchange - Should I sell my stuff?
Neither the whip nor Dharok are hot-ticket items. They're going down in price every day, to be frank. If you want to sell them do so. If not hold on to them. Don't let the GE spook you into selling if you don't want to; the last thing we need is some seller being paranoid.

Will Jagex repeal the stake limit?
If they did appeal the limit, then all that talk about stopping Real World Traders was for nothing. (Besides, I don't need him talking hot-air just yet; my hot-air balloon still needs a new basket...)

Well...I'm done
It's a real shame you can't find some other way to have fun in this vast game. See ya later, don't let the door hit your rear on the way out.

Woodcutting and the Duel Arena?
Let's try to use what's between our ears, here. Woodcutting is a skill. Duel Arena is a minigame. Woodcutting cannot receive 'the axe' (no pun intended), meaning that there wouldn't have been any point to train it in the first place. Duel Arena is something that affects players either a lot or none at all. There's not many integral quests or super-duper important things at the Duel Arena, save for that lone person you have to talk to for a Treasure Trail clue, so something along the lines of that could receive a "nerfing", as you so empathetically put it. To summarize: Duel Arena isn't a skill. It's quite superfluous, in the sense that such an update can affect a certain group of players, and the other groups may or may not give a damn. Woodcutting is a skill. It's not superfluous, and if it is made impractical to gather up resources with, then that would be ritual suicide. [Note]

What is going on here?
they posted its not even coming out...if it was they won't hide it... Who posted it where? If it ain't by Jagex themselves, then it's another rumor mill. But finally, someone speaks out against the pessimism and rants of these new/speculated updates. Bravo.

What do you think Jagex will mess up next?
the majority is not happy. only like 3% DOES like this update i suppose. 3%? From what standpoint? You can't get the opinion of 1 million players, and even with polls and the forums, that's only a fraction of users participating. Could you verify these numbers, or where you got them from? Because if you can't, then you're talking nothing but hot air here. [/hide] We shouldn't get used to it. It's sad you got no morals to stand up for what you believe for. I bet you get picked on and just let it occur? You get used to getting picked on? Jagex has a product called RuneScape if they ever hope to become bigger then they have to listen to those who are loyal and actually the 5 bucks unlike some which you say F2P for life.....but this isn't a f2p vs. p2p. Why you think they are giving out guarrenteed polls? And you say the majority is happy. Are you blind? May I suggest you read other fourms and perhaps get some glasses and contact if needed because it seems you do. A majority is very unhappy since this was a way to pvp without going to the wilderness. Where pvp in wilderness blows sometimes since some tag etc etc. Haven't got a role model to tell you to stand up for what you believe for? I suggest you take an ethnics. And NO I will not leave RuneScape. Sorry, but I here to stay for these last 5 years there going to give us. Even though it's going to be a trashy game if they continue on the road to "try" to stop the chinese sweatshops. Latinoking90 is Here To Stay. If you don't get used to it soon, you're not going to stay for very long, that's for sure. Firstly, I do have morals. I haven't been "bullied" in nigh on one and a half decades (and even then I didn't take no crap), so I don't know what you're on about there. Less time attacking me, more time attacking my views. Second, the loyalists are the ones that appreciate [or at the very least, respect the efforts of] every update that is made to either improve the game, or stop autoers. The only sacrifice I've had to make with this update is listening to the riots and rants that other players have given because they believe that 'staking is ruined', or 'RS is ruined'. You call those players loyal? And I'm talking about the rioters or the "We pay, we say" spammers. Also, the only guaranteed polls that I've seen are in the forms of Graphics, Wallpapers, Achievement Diaries and the recent October holiday. We all know how well the Achievement Diary and the October polls went, so let's get these guys together and vote on a measure to stop RWTers. Third, let's work on your command of the English language. Ethnics is defined as, "a member of an ethnic group; especially : a member of a minority group who retains the customs, language, or social views of the group". My guess is that you meant to say ethics, but that wouldn't apply here either. Finally, your views on the game here in this last paragraph confuse me. You're here to stay with this 'trashy game'? Wouldn't that be an oxymoron? By the way, what Rebdragon said is right. You pay for the game as a whole, not just the updates. Like it or not, you're gonna have to get used to it.
-
What do you think Jagex will mess up next?
The pure essence update didn't please runecrafters (at first), but they got used to it. The Pest Control update didn't please pures, but they got used to it. The Grand Exchange might not please merchanters, but they've got to get used to it. The Duel Arena didn't please you. Get used to it or get gone. Not every update that Jagex does is made especially to cater to that one person; it's done to make the majority happy. If you're not satisfied with a game that updates weekly, accepts player input and acts upon it, and gives you the chance to rant your ungrateful little head off about it, then find some other game that'll satisfy you.

Curing the Disease by Killing the Patient
I've read this entire article, and for the most part, I'm going to disagree empathetically with everything that you've said here. Allow me to explain. In your opening paragraphs, I notice that you say that, ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¦Ã¢â¬Åthe predictable end result of misguided and ineffective efforts to stop crime is simply more harm and inconvenience to innocents, with little effect on the intended targets̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃâÃ
