  1. You'd think that the fact that it keeps happening over and over and over again would clue you in. And as Mamong points out, DOSbox is more than enough to handle any DOS game on XP.
  2. I have one! I have one! When people have surgically removed senses of humor and demonstrate that by taking a fairly funny April fool's forum joke and going absolutely illogically ballistic about it!
  3. I trusted him enough to watch Shooter, and it paid off in spades... I have little doubt he will rock as Max Payne.
  4. Perfect. There is no other way to describe a movie of this caliber. Absolutely Perfect.
  5. The knowledge is the same, but the difficulty of the class depends entirely on the teacher.
  6. The abyssal whip on a slayer assignment definitely outkicks the berserker necklace and sword, and the saradomin sword is the new standard of strength training. Both outkick the berserker necklace and obby sword combination.
  7. I would disagree just on the basis of that if you're a small country and China is feeding you huge amounts of money and resources from investments and whatever else, when China says something to you, you tend to yell "How High Sir!?" Although it's true that plenty of people make plenty of noise about China's less-than-good dealings (human rights, Tibet, Sudan, etc etc), those people are either not in power (read: hippies) or if they are, they keep very very very quiet about it. A good example is the lack of serious protest by countries before and probably during the Olympic Games in regards to China's viciously bad human rights record. The Olympics are the perfect venue to shred China about their bad doings, but every country is far too scared to do it due to their dependence on China's economic power. In short form, China's economic power (which it can wield like a sledgehammer or a scalpel) translates to serious amounts of diplomatic power.
  8. The problem with this vague statement of "strongest" is that it assumes that there's only one form of power, which there isn't. There's hard power and soft power. Hard power would be the amount of power a country can wield by force, either through boots on the ground or missiles in the air. Although the U.S. maintains quite a large technological edge over every other country with a person in uniform, the Mess-o-Potamia that is Iraq means most of that power is bogged down in a situation that it couldn't pull out of quickly enough should a war with a different country occur. However, the fact that the U.S. is stretched militarily does NOT affect the actual quantity of hard power the U.S. has, it just means that it's being used. Big difference. In terms of quantifying hard power, the United States has more nukes than anyone else and enough means of delivering them that make nuclear annihilation of a target inevitable (missile subs, ICBMS, strategic bombers, whatever scary mini-nukes they can strap onto strike fighters). Nukes end any argument over hard power because in the end, a nuclear weapon versus however many soldiers always ends in the nuke winning. You CAN delineate hard power into conventional hard power and nuclear hard power, and that's where a debate can occur. Otherwise, no question about it. Soft power is the amount a power a country can wield economically and diplomatically. To determine that you'd look at the size and scope of a country's economy, the dependence of other countries on your country's economy, etc etc etc. You also count the amount of political capital the country holds with the rest of the world (whether they pay attention when we say something, whether they care, etc etc). Although it was true that back in the day when the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA talked everyone jumped to attention, the international relations debacle that was the Bush Administration (you can't argue that he wrecked relations with plenty of countries) means that the political force wielded by the U.S. is diminished, especially with small countries in Africa and Asia. For example, when Bush was denouncing the Myanmar massacres, the rest of the world didn't do much but shrug, indicating a lack of political capital with the rest of the world. Comparing the U.S. and China economically, there is no question of the U.S.'s dependence on China. "MADE IN CHINA" has pretty much become so prevalent that it's rare to find something made in the USA these days, which indicates that however large the U.S. economy is, it is outranked by China's due to its dependence. Don't get me wrong, China needs America to sell its goods to, but the trade deficit is a key indicator of how badly the scales are skewed in China's favor. Politically, they wield enormous power with other countries due to their massive investment in foreign operations (for example, the known fact that China wields enormous influence over Sudan's actions but as of yet has done very little to stem the genocide). By those standards, the People's Republic of China dwarfs the U.S. in soft power and exhibits a clear hegemony over the world's economy, while the U.S. maintains a severe lead in force.
  9. Exactly what I was thinking For some, the helmet may be worth blitzing through mazchna to get early on. And your experience will not differ too much from if you were only using Duradel, since you'll be fighting monsters with mazchna anyways, the only difference being that you'll spend a bit more time with getting new tasks. The only real difference is of course with drops. The helmet does give you a chance to kill dust devils with the black mask, the chance to cannon abberants, and i believe the chance to cannon cave crawlers and basilisks too. Whether that's worth the point rush is really a matter of preference. And the 10 task bonus is 5x points, while the 50 task bonus is 10x points. Duradel= base 15 Sumona = base 12 Mazchna = base 1 Vannaka = base 4 Chaeldar = base 10 (you can calculate from there) And to answer an earlier question, Chen skips kalphites because he doesn't cannon and hates them in general (kalphites not cannons).
  10. Regardless of the irrationality of comparing computer specs to real world trading, the question itself is legitimate. The link below is to an article examining the first year of Station Exchange, a set of separate servers for Everquest II that allow real world trading (of which Sony takes a cut of every transaction). http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&c ... 11. Definitely against low ranged defense monsters, as the accuracy then doesn't matter but the 10% void damage does. High range defense monsters we probably don't know since we have no idea how the combat system works. It would be a stretch to assume however that the extra 54 points of attack cause a higher dps than void. Pretty much a safe bet is to use void unless you're ranging something that can hit you hard.
  12. The point is that the speed of getting to the bonus tasks (by using Mazchna) results in faster points than using Duradel, Duradel, and more Duradel. You will have less points in 10 tasks (9 mazchna and 1 Duradel), but you will have accomplished it much much faster. Mazchna/Duradel = more points per minute of Runescape than Duradel/Duradel. And you can switch at any time as long as you make sure to use Duradel for your bonus.
  13. I reluctantly concede that these are some good tips. If I have to. I guess.
  14. I LOVE this one. It's not as good as subBlack, but it's pretty close. I think we need at least one black one for people like me. I watch forums way too much for it to be white... it hurts my eyes  A vote in favor of this style- it's no subBlack, but since subBlack doesn't exist for phpbb3 (as of yet) this would be a good substitute.
  15. We're talking about the ingame economy, not the choice or real-life implications of playing. They're intertwined. Everyone who is involved in the economy is involved voluntarily. You can't enter a fantasy world where we actually ARE the characters, unless you plan on being one of those freaky LARPers or whatever. Your participation in the economy is completely voluntary (playing/not playing), which makes it dumb to compare it to communism, a system of government that for many people is NOT voluntary.
  16. And...you're wrong. So wrong in fact it's fairly hilarious. Jagex, Runescape, and you are the essence of capitalism. Jagex provides a service, IE Runescape. You pay for that service. (Oh, by the way, you don't actually own your own character. Which means nothing BELONGS to you, a point that is important later). If you like that service, you keep playing. If you do not like that service, you stop paying for it (playing). If you whine and complain about a service you are voluntarily paying for, you are an idiot. It is NOT in fact a legitimate whine to say "but we put so much work into runescape" because A) You are hopefully paying for the FUN OF PLAYING (a point many seem to miss) and B) Nothing (your character, your items, etc) atcually belongs to you. So all in all, my point is that you're pretty dumb. It's not like Jagex is tying you down and forcing you to play Runescape. Go to WoW if you dislike things now so much.
  17. I'll need a Romeo! :-w But soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun!
  18. So, on one hand, you're just saying that the GE isn't adjusting prices quickly enough, even though you fail yet again to actually provide examples of how MOST items experience more than 5 percent swings in price EACH DAY. And then on the other hand, you're spouting these fairly irrational conspiracy theories about how Jagex is "trying to take control" or "making a control grab"....for a game they own....which is still disproven by the fact that price changes are occurring (albeit slowly, see above for why that's not horrible), and that Jagex is asking for help in making sure prices are on-target for the market....in the RSOF thread you posted. Do you always shoot yourself in the foot like this? The prices will drop until they are attractive to buyers, and then they will stabilize. That would have happened immediately except that the price controls are making it happen in "slow motion". I think it's also fair to point out that many items have had higher prices than they really should have because there was no way to sell them. Prices on less common items were rarely sold and then only when somebody needed one, so they were willing to pay more. Now that people are "cleaning out their banks" many items will drop in price until they reach a more reasonable level.
  19. I know well enough that I have a bunch of items that have been sitting offered for sale at the lowest possible price, that haven't sold and the price hasn't changed. Well, yeah. The mechanism, whatever it is, changes the price every day. If after a few days (or even tomorrow) that prices in the GE have remained completely out of whack with actual market prices, then perhaps your complaint has merit. Until then, this is a new system undergoing a shakedown and getting rid of the last few remaining bugs, and I see no reason to crucify it just because it didn't get rid of the kinks fast enough.
  20. Neither you and I can actually speak on the mechanism because we don't actually know how well it works. A daily price correction that swings far enough to actually capture the market would be more than enough for most items. And I'm sure jagex has some reason for the 5% deal.
  21. I'm not bashing it, I am simply stating some simple facts. It doesn't matter that the first update hasn't happened yet. The problem is in the infrequency of the updates and the too-narrow price ranges. jessy87: I just tried listing a d left half for sale. Some Jagex 'market expert' decided that this is worth 700k, so the lowest I can list it for is 665k. How long do you think it will take until it sells? ;) If calling a system "idiocy" isn't bashing, I don't know what is. Once again, as you've failed to think about yet again, the market will gradually adjust itself. Your apparent inability to handle the wait of a few days to see what the exchange actually lists the prices at after some market influence makes you come off as a judgemental toddler that refuses to do anything but make snap assumptions. So what if a few prices were marked wrong? It's self correcting and will be sorted out in a few days. And yes, I know, you blathered on and on about how a slow adapting market will kill things- but you still haven't proven how most of the items in the exchange suffer from massive daily fluctuations, only that they CAN, which is much different from actually doing so.
  22. With all due respect, have you actually tried selling things on this? The vast MAJORITY of items do not sell because the prices are wrong. What you and others don't seem to understand is that markets that take days to respond to market trends fail. I certainly have no interest in dealing with this idiocy when I can just sell for the price I want on the forums. I'm not so sure why you're so insistent on bashing a system that hasn't even had its first price update yet, but I hope you have fun on the forums. The rest of us will at least be patient enough to give the exchange a few days to see what it turns into.
  23. Again, yes they CAN, but whether prices of most items are CONSTANTLY fluctuating by more than 5% is fairly unlikely. Also, you and I are both wrong on Jagex's methods for altering the grand exchange: Also, I'm not quite sure where the once-a-day price update came from and whether or not it's a concrete statement from Jagex, but if it isn't, it's speculation based on the worst possible scenario.
  24. Again, the market would only be ineffective if prices of most items fluctuate more than 5% each day, which for most items doesn't happen. The market will find it's own place, albeit slower than you want, but it'll get there nonetheless.
