Safing isn't "bad" it's just that people are angry because they can't quickly R2H you for a kill or something. It's more bogus than other "honor" rules of the wilderness, like no teleporting or praying. I guess someone was about to pk something good, but the person ate right before they unleashed specials or something. Safing is a disadvantage though, because it makes it harder to live because you eat the food more often, and sooner.

It might be because your strength*1.15=17.0something, so that by the time you switch weapons and get back to the stats screen it has already gone down, but I don't know. Odd, either way.

The second screen for dueling doesn't show which armor is allowed. It just says, "some armor cannot be used in this fight," or something along those lines.
