Forum Advertisement Ideas
Not necessarily true. It's been awhile since I have talked to Silverion, but I can say that if there was a major problem with cash flow, he would add more advertisements. I wouldn't worry about it.

Gun Control
[hide=large pictures] [/hide] Statistics that everyone seems to ignore. Not only has the UK banned guns, but they have banned toys that look like guns, toy swords, beer glasses, fire extinguishers, and are considering banning pointy kitchen knives. Why? Because despite banning more and more different objects, the violent crime rate in the UK continues to increase. What is the point in banning law abiding citizens from buying handguns when, even with the bans in place, criminals can still easily buy, make or steal one? As this website shows, building a gun is incredibly easy - with access to basic hand tools and the local hardware store, you can build a sub machine gun in a few days. If you are too lazy to build one, I have not been to a single major city (including plenty in "gun free" parts of Europe) where it is impossible to easily illegally buy a handgun. Effective weapons in general are so simple that it is literally impossible to rid an entire country of them. A group of armed soldiers fighting an unarmed village - exactly a situation that an armed populace prevents. This is an interesting (albiet long) quote that explains this:

Since all developed countries have minimum wage, should we
A maximum wage would go against one of the basic principals of capitalism - that something is worth what its buyer will pay for it. That said, many unions have gotten far too powerful, and are literally sucking the life out of the companies they formed under (the UAW for example). Laws need to be passed that break the back of the unions and get them back to their founding purpose.

Airsoft: Gas mask?
Additionally, if the mask is a surplus mask (and out of date/not current production) you should not wear it with the filters in. Old gas mask filters have all sorts of chemicals in them that are terrible for your health, so if you do wear it keep the filter canister off.

Gun Control
That was one of several stabbing sprees actually. One killed 7 people and injured another 10, (source) while in China 5 police officers were killed when a man attacked them in the police station with a knife. Hardly defenseless children. (Source) Again, banning guns exclusively based on cosmetic features is flawed. If you replace the stock (a 4 minute operation) on a standard Remington 700 hunting rifle, you magically get the M40 sniper rifle, used by the United States Marine Corps, Army and the armies of several other countries. The differences between a hunting rifle and a scary looking "assault weapon" are purely cosmetic. So are you suggjesting that non scary looking "hunting rifles" should be kept at home, while scary looking "target weapons" in an ineffective caliber should be banned? Once again, please learn something about guns before you attempt to judge the merits of banning them. The entire reason for the current torrent of useless laws is uninformed politicians attempting to win votes. Again, you still lack a definition of "reasonable", other then "not scary looking". The above statement is an oxymoron. Before you complain about "high caliber concealable handguns" again, do me a favor. Go to your local shooting range and rent a Desert Eagle. Then try to hide it in your clothes. And walk around effectively. It is their business to carry around whatever is necessary to ensure that their rights are not violated. It is inevitable that if a criminal wants a gun, or any other weapon for that matter, they will get it. See the statistics I posted on gun use in Britian after they were banned. All of which have the effect of making guns difficult to legally obtain by all but the very rich. Despite the extreme restrictions in place in most of Europe, it obviously does not work very well - the violent crime rate in both Australia (another country with restrictive laws) and Britain is more then double that in the United States. In fact, after handguns were banned completely in Britain in 1997, the proportion of crimes involving guns has more then doubled. (Source) Compare the crime rate in Japan with the crime rate in Switzerland - both have similar (very low) rates of violent crime. In Japan, guns have always been illegal, whereas in Switzerland almost every household is required to posses a SIG 550 select fire rifle. Crime is, and always has been a cultural problem related to poverty, not the availability (or lack of) a particular object. (Source) Uuh, no, I don't see how "horribly" it works. You still haven't provided a single statistic that says people would somehow be safer without the means to protect themselves. My good Friend Merriam Webster would like to disagree with your first statement, while your second statement has been addressed below: (Source) Now in the US the Selective Service is the body that determines who is eligible to be called to military service. Even by your (flawed) interpretation of the constitution, any male aged 18-25 is, and always has been, part of the militia. Not that any of that even matters. Because of the Supreme Court case, the second amendment has been finally settled as being an individual right, not one somehow limited to only males between the ages of 18-25. The entire militia argument is moot. The actual reason is to give the people of the United States a means to enforce the constitution and uphold their rights. Without any method of backing up the constitution, the rest of the rights listed there are empty words on a piece of paper. Time and time again history has shown that is one group is able to screw another group for their own gain, then they will. The Second Amendment prevents this from happening.

Gun Control
If I remember right, Cho managed to kill something like 34 people with a single Glock 17, and I have heard of several instances of people in Japan killing 10+ people with nothing but a kitchen knife. With enough creativity and determination, you can do practically anything. Literally impossible to implement. I know two people that home make their own ammunition to save on costs. Even if you ban the ammunition, reloading is very very easy. Fully automatic weapons are already heavily regulated under several different laws. "Assault weapon" is a term made up by gun banners to denote a scary looking, but otherwise harmless gun that they dislike for whatever reason. The legal limit for owning a handgun in the United States is already 21. Again, already the law in 46 out of 50 states. Two states ban concealed carry altogether (and consequently have some of the highest crime rates in the union) while in Vermont and Alaska you do not need a permit to carry a gun. (these two states have some of the lowest crime rates) Again, already happens. When you buy any gun your name is automatically run through a national instant background check (the NICS system). If you have ever had certain mental conditions, felony convictions or a handful of other things, you are disqualified from buying the gun. Several things - first of all, most Desert Eagles sold are not chambered in .50 AE - the ammunition is too expensive to shoot regularly, so most people buy the gun chambered in smaller cartridges - the guns chambered in both .357 and .44 mag are by no means "low production models". Second of all, why would anyone need an "excuse" for buying something they have a right to? Even then, an Eagle is a terrible gun to commit a crime with; the thing is huge, heavy, expensive, massively gaudy and hard to hide, and the recoil makes it very difficult to shoot - trust me, I have shot one several times. Please oh please have some idea what you are talking about before you post. The picture you provided was of .50 BMG (Browning Machine Gun) ammunition, used exclusively machine guns and very heavy rifles. Such a round is so big if you tried to put one in a handgun, the recoil would literally rip your arm off. The picture below shows the actual three cartridges the desert eagle is chambered in, from the left, along with several other common handgun calibers. While bigger then common handgun rounds, it is in no way more "dangerous" then any other gun. [hide=][/hide] Someone does not need a "reason" - it is their right to own one. Even then, a Desert Eagle is a fun range toy; people buy them because they are big, gaudy and look interesting. Other people hunt with them; when facing dangerous game like large wild boars it is necessary to have a gun that will quickly stop the animal before it can hurt the hunter. The same goes for rifles chambered in .50 BMG - some buy them because they are interesting, while others (myself included) enjoy them because they allow for challenging long range shots out beyond 1000 meters that are impossible with smaller weapons.

How to sound-proof your bedroom?
actually soundproofing an already built room is very difficult and can be expensive. As others have said, foam is the most effective way, but most any type of insulation will work - thermal insulation is generally excellent at blocking sound from entering the room. Actually installing it on the walls is the hard part; short of gutting the room and putting it in, then replacing the wallboard, there is no effective way to hide it.

The Minimum Wage
Not true. Federal law supersedes state law, so if the state law has a lower minimum wage the federal law takes precedent. The national minimum wage in the US is 5.75$ an hour. In no state can it be lower then that. What? 1 Canadian dollar is only worth about 79 American cents right now. As to minimum wage, while there is no particularly pressing need to rasie it, I see no problem with it going up to about 10 dollars an hour. Business studies have shown that raising it would not impact business profits in any significant amount, and it would help some workers.

What kind of passwords do you guys have?
All my passwords in otherwise secure places, like my hard drive encryption password, are combination of 20+ letters, numbers, spaces and symbols of varying cases. With a mix of actual words and nonsense. Using just words and symbols is generally a bad idea, because as said before if someone wants to they can crack it with a dictionary attack fairly quickly. Its still possible (if not probable) that even long passwords like mine can be cracked in a reasonable amount of time by the likes of the NSA, but there is not very many people out there with a budget of 10 billion dollars a year doing nothing but building computers to break passwords. Some passwords you should not bother making long however, because there is security holes in the program that let you gain access easily anyway. For instance, a standard windows password can be cracked in a matter of minutes no matter how long it is.

Custom Building Computer
I would highly recommend waiting for a core i7 setup. With the currently published numbers on both performance and price, you can be expected to pay around 800 dollars for the CPU, mobo and RAM - (300$ for the motherboard, 240$ for the CPU, and the rest for DDR3 memory). For this you get a processor that is -stock- 20% faster then the one you picked out, and reports are saying that they will be excellent overclockers as well. Additionally, I agree with the 4870X2, it is a better card and with your budget you can fit it in.

Everything must be SLI?
Whoever told you that has no idea what they are talking about. To create an SLI configuration, all you need is a pair of identical graphics cards and a motherboard that supports SLI - that is, any mid to high end Nvidia chipset or the new intel X58 core i7 chipset. That said, what is your computer budget, and what processor are you using? Going for an AMD setup at this time is a terrible idea with the very low price of the core 2 duos and the fact that the new core i7's will be out in a few days. If you can wait a week or two to order the parts, it may be best to go with an i7 based system; the new parts look to be much much much faster then the current generation.

Banned Books
It is. When a book is referred to as "banned" they really mean that the school library just does not keep a copy of it. Actually banning it (as in preventing its publishing or dissemination) would be highly illegal. In other countries however (Australia and Germany come to mind) freedom of the press is not protected, so some books are banned. IE I have a copy of Mein Komph, (Hitler's autobiography) which is banned in Germany and I have heard that several books related to making weapons are banned in Australia.

Tip.it Hall of fame
While I like the idea of a tipit hall of fame, It would probably just become a popularity contest if we had regular forum users voting people in - people that really don't deserve it will be voted in, while people that did tons of stuff for tipit but have left months ago will be left out. If a feasible way of inducting people could be created, I would support this. Otherwise, no.

What kind of graphics card? And why just 6GB of memory, not 8? memory comes in matched pairs of sticks for the dual data rate function and leaving one stick out like that cuts all of it down to half speed. What is your budget? Are you building this computer yourself? What processors in particular are you considering? We need more information to make a decision of which processor is better for your particular setup.

Upgrading a Laptop
RSHD is NOT a very demanding program - any laptop on the market with a current discrete graphics card can run it just fine maxed. It does not take a particularly powerful computer to run it. As far as your original question; yes, it is practically impossible to upgrade a laptop's graphics card without a degree in computer engineering. I don't get why people always complain about overheating problems in laptops - I have owned (and currently own) several laptops, two of which are powerful machines with high end graphics cards and I have never had a problem with overheating. Perhaps certain manufacturers don't bother with thermal design?

The Offical TIF American Elections thread
Unfortunately, yes in the form of welfare - a program that needs to be cut to about 10% of its current expenditures, seeing as most of the money it gets is wasted. I believe in a small government that takes the bare minimum necessary in taxes to ensure order and protect the rights of the people; not a state that gobbles up massively unnecessary amounts of MY hard-earned money just to waste it on inefficient (socialist) programs - exactly what Obama is proposing. Seeing as every time such programs are implemented they either fail miserably or waste massive amounts of the people's money, it is a much better idea to stay away from such things. Obama is proposing socialist programs ala Northern Europe, that for the good of the country can not be put into effect. While strictly speaking most of his policies are not as extreme as a true socialist (or even farther, a communist) he still has enough expensive proposals on the table to force a (large) increase in taxes and still wreck the budget. Who is "you people"? Money spent on defense is used for one purpose - do defend the rights of the citizens of the United States. It has for more then 200 years, and still does fulfill that purpose. That is more then worth ~ 1% of the federal taxes I pay. What is not worth paying is ~30% of my TOTAL INCOME (as they do in much of Europe and Canada) to pay for the bureaucracy involved in a hopelessly inefficient, wasteful and ineffective public health care system. As a rule, if both private enterprise and government can do the same thing, then private businesses can do it better, cheaper and more efficiently. The whole point is that the second amendment confers a right, not a privilege but a right to keep and bear arms. Rights are not negotiable, bannable because they are "scary" (as the democratic party is trying to do with their so called "assault weapons ban") or open to other annoying regulation - A right is a right. By his logic of allowing individual communities to pass laws ignoring constitutional rights, states could, at a whim, ban free speech or religion, the right to a jury trial or the right to due process. Does that sound OK to you?

The Offical TIF American Elections thread
I went and saw Mccain today, shook his hand and got interviewed by the Associated press and CNN. I must say, compared to his performances on TV which are "meh", his live ones are much much much better; even better then Obama's live speeches (who I saw a week or two ago now, live) It seems that now that Mccain is quite far behind in the polls he is starting to drop all of the posturing and other political BS in his speeches, and by saying what he actually thinks sounds much better. If I could vote right now I would definitely go for Mccain, particularly because the more I hear about Obama's policies the more he scares me. From this idea of ignoring the constitution and banning guns to "spreading the wealth around" AKA socialism; he has a hell of a lot of charisma but some horrible actual policy ideas.

Australia to adopt China-like firewall.
Not really possible at all, because the filter works at the ISP level & is applied every time you send or recieve data. You can't just make a client-side 'fix' for it. Even if they somehow managed to hack an ISP's main server and remove the filter, it would be back up in no time. What's more likely is that proxies will just become more common for torrent users etc. And then the government starts targeting proxies.. Actually stopping people from circumventing such a filter is literally impossible - if you can use google you can find several very easy to use programs that encrypt all of your internet traffic, making your connection immune from any possible blocking attempts. As usual, this will do nothing but take away more of the people's fundamental rights. I know If i lived in Australia right now, I would be getting very familiar with tor.
