Iran Kidnaps UK Marines

Ambassadar

Recommended Posts

Crude oil futures were rising Friday morning in New York amid news that the Iranian navy has captured 15 British marines in the Persian Gulf.

The seamen are reported to be crewmembers of the frigate HMS Cornwall, and they were conducting inspections of a merchant ship when they were surrounded by Iranian vessels. They have since been taken in to Iranian waters, according to reports.

Basically they were inspecting a ship suspected of smuggling in international waters and the Iranian navy captures them.

When did Britain become the police force for the Persian Gulf?

International waters. All nations have the duty to patrol them. Regardless of where.

It turns out they were in Iraqi territorial waters... but the Iranians claim they were in Iranian waters.

Well, until the occupation ends, Coalition Navies have jurisdiction in Iraqi waters.

This will be interesting to watch.

Pfft, they want a war. Give them it. They know they will lose, do the Iranians think this will in some way help them?

You insane? The Ayatollah can make a war with Iran a war on Extremist Islam with the snap of a finger.

It's happened before without much consequence. The marines will spend a no more than a week in Teheran before being sent home, with nary a hair touched on their heads. The Iranians aren't so stupid that they'd hand the British and Americans a casus belli on a plate.

I'm sure we'll resolve this before an all out war is started. We just need to send the right man.

You dare use the NEW James Bond as referance? BLASPHEMY!

:P

I'm sure they'll be returned safely home. What I don't understand is why the British Marines would have even allowed themselves to be taken into custody if they knew they did no wrong.

...Granted, I guess it is better than shooting some Iranian army d00dz in the face...That would have started a conflict.

And thus why I'm not in the army.

One of my brothers is on the sister ship of the HMS Cornwall. My mother was freaking out today.

IRANIAN army. Not IRAQI insurgents. :P

When your son stands the possibility of capture by any foreign power, it's still a scary experience.

Agreed.

And apparently there is like a wierd shape of who own which waters there and its like a funnel shape where it goes from International to Iraqi and Iranian waters with narrow passage where it is half and half and if we were in Iranian waters they had every right to sieze them.

Anyway it will probs all boil down to nothing and the soldiers will be returned safely.

Jokes aside, Britain isn't going to do a thing anyway. The British Empire the world knew is long gone.

Not to mention this happened before:

In June 2004, Iran took eight British marines and sailors from their patrol boats, keeping them for three days, saying they had breached the maritme border. While they were held, the servicemen were paraded around blindfolded and forced to apologize on Iranian TV, before being released.

The British Government has already demanded their safe return and has warned that there will be no repeat of what happened last time. And yes the british empire "the world knew" is gone, well spotted but what does tht have to do with anything? Of course Britain will do something about it, saying that nothing will be done is ignorant, just because Britain doesn't feel the need to flex its military muscle every decade or so doesn't mean that they will accept leaving their servicemen to humiliate themselves and their country on aljazeera TV.
