What helps you work hard?

I'd like to find out what helps people get their hard training done, besides the satisfaction of the end result.

Is it music?

Is it the forums?

Is it television?

Please discuss with some logic...

I have a few tactics that I use...

Mini goals : instead of aiming for say lvl 90 slaying, I'll first aim for 5m exp, then i'll aim for lvl 90. Breaks it up a bit and is slightly less depressing in terms of obstables to overcome.

Friendly Competition : there's a few guys in the clan that I like to race with... gives me the motivation to do well

Respect : gotta love those lvl 99 capes lol.

Money : i often have a side goal of achieving a certain amount of cash.

Forums & Browsing : offsets the boredom on repetitive tasks.

I say racing helps a lot. I remember when i was going for 99 mining, i met 1 of the top players in the mines, i looked him up to saw that he had lv 96 mining, i had 94. Deciding that i should win a top player in at least 1 stat, so i make a goal for it and i outlvl him in 1 week time. :uhh: Afterwards i slowly search for top players to outlvl and that got me to 98 quickly, then it's the last push...

Strangely with WotLK so near, I wished I could delay it a bit to push through that last TBC content in MH/BT :'(.

Short term goals.

For example, instead having a training marathon to train a skill for an entire week, I train the skill one level at a time. Depending on the skill, I might be training for a few hours to gather materials for another skill etc. Another short term goal is training certain skills for quests. This could be Agility, my melee combat skills, range, magic or whatever skills I need to help me finish my quest.

What keeps me going?

Competition with my friends.

If they train fast, i train faster, if thry no life, I ....err.... more no-life

I guess thats it.

A wise man once said "You can eat an elephant but you'll need to do it one small bite at a time."

Followed by "But you can eat Sharks and lobsters in one go! So aim for them instead!"

Sharks and lobsters are smaller than elephants, so sure, why not.

To bring my quote into context, you can't tackle a giant task ("...eat an elephant...") all at once. You have to break the task down to smaller, more managable tasks ("...one small bite at a time.") and thus your goal becomes more achievable.
