Do you think you have a soul?

And btw, "We don't know" is not an opinion, it's the truth.

If you think one thing is true, is that not your opinion?

None here are not dead yet, we don't know!

You missed the point; I'm not talking about your question there.

I meant, if one person thinks one thing to be true, is it not their opinion?

I like to think I do, whether I do or not is another story :)

The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours.

Well seeing as ghosts exist, people have to be more than just cells.

Ghosts don't exist. =P At least, I don't believe in them. Even if they do, why does that mean people aren't more than just cells? The human mind is a powerful thing, I don't deem it beyond it's power to leave an imprint in death under certain circumstances.

I'm pretty anti-ghost existance, but that's an idea, eh?

I don't believe in a soul. I think it's just a... thingy... used to make people feel better when someone dies. Like the phrase, "At least he's gone to a better place." I just think you rot in the earth. Why don't we have someone die with a video camera inside their brain?

I don't know , and I don't care.

Um... yeah... great opinion. =D>

The fact is there is no evidence to suggest we have a life after death, but at the same time, there's nothing to suggest otherwise. It does come down to faith and perhaps one of the hardest things about dealing with death is the worry about what happens next. I personally don't believe in anything that doesn't have logic or evidence behind it. So no, I don't believe in souls, but I'm open-minded enough to admit I don't know any better.

Well I can't prove I have a soul, I don't really believe in it. Does an ant have a soul? A cow? A horse? A whale? The only thing separating us from those animals is brainpower that enables us to recognise our existence... We're just like them, animals.

Sure it does sound like a nice and noble idea but a 'soul' to me is just another word for your mental state. Like a plate of metal. It can be broken, repaired, healed, irreversibly damaged or scratched, it can be pure, it can be filthy. When you're born your plate of metal is completely pure and it has nothing recorded on it, but what you do in life will alter it.

But the only way to know for sure is to die and find out, for now.. 8-) I can't criticize those who do believe in a soul, it's a bit different than believing in 'religion'. You could be an atheist and still believe your 'soul' (assuming one exists) merely moves to another place/host.

I like to think that I do, but I could never prove it.

It's obvious that a soul would be non-physical.

The closest we can get (at least if we're alive) to an afterlife-like state of existence is via dreaming.

Of course this is my opinion.

Eh tbh my opinion is as good as yours. I don't know whether or not I have a soul, and I wouldn't care if there was an afterlife or not.

I believe in a soul, and I also believe it is physical to some extent, with a similar consistency to plasma perhaps, or light. I mean both light and plasma are physical but we find that hard to believe. 8-) Wow the universe is a cool yet strange place.

Yes, I believe I have a soul.

I believe this because you can't destroy energy, and humans have energy inside of them. So, it has to go somewhere. And it probably gets discharged when you die, into a soul.

Wonder if that made sense... :-k

If you think you continue to exist, then it means you believe you are something more than just a body.

That wouldn't necessarily mean that i have a soul.

Guess it's a matter of definition. If having a soul means being composed of more then a meat body, then i'm pretty positive i have a soul. The body is merely a vehicle. If you want some evidence, read about near death experiences for example. There is plenty evidence, but hardly any proof of course.

If you think of a soul as the undestroyable, eternal part of myself, then i'm not so sure. Right now i rather doubt they exist, but what do i know?

The energy could as well just disperse.

Err... or it just goes to da decomposers :-k . It's not destroyed, it simply reenters the life cycle. No magic there.

The whole "energy" argument is cute guys, but it's pretty illogical to try and force something like the soul into the category of natural phenomena :| . There is no precedent for energy being retained to sustain consciousness, and all we know about energy points to the contrary of these arguments... just say it's supernatural and be done with it.

Me, I don't believe in the soul... just for how illogical the concept is. What, was there some line in this races history where all of a sudden "poof", we had a soul? Why should only we have a soul, and not other living organisms? Hate to say it, but I've always considered the soul to be little more than a story to help the little tikes sleep at night :| .

Animals could have souls as well. Or planets for that matter. I do believe that planets and stars are beings and i think being a sun would feel awsome.

Soul came into play with religion and the idea of the after-life, which had been around for centuries. It's more than just a story to give people comfort, it is part of human nature to want there to be something more and explain that something more through any means necesary. Humans also usually consider themselves above other species, so we're the only ones thought to have a soul (in most cases).

I actually agree with you about the presence (or rather absense) of a soul, just putting in my own opinions.

When you die, you don't have energy anymore. If you still had energy, you wouldn't of died. Decomposers may turn your flesh into energy, but your body has no energy left in it. And a soul is basically figurative for anyone that isn't Christian. And how is it illogical to force a soul the energy argument? That energy has to go somewhere, but where? If you are Christian, you believe to heaven. But it may just discharge into the air. Or, in rare cases, maintain a form, explaining ghosts. And if everything loses energy when it dies, than theoretically, they do have souls.

kelem_ryu, that's basically what I said. Disperse is going off to anywhere(I think), discharge is to get rid of.

See, that's just thinking too much about mythology. I can understand the need to think we humans, who can feel empathy, have souls, but a burning mass of hydrogen  ? That's pushing it.

And where do you draw a line for a soul in living organisms? Zebras? Rats? Flies? Bacteria? There is no line to be made. The logic of the concept is just... nonexistent. From a human perspective anyways :| .

I know (thanks for clarifying the point though, very well written), I was using that as a kind of metaphor for humans in general... we seem to have this kind of egotistical, yet inferiority need to consider ourselves "special", above all other existence. It's a need to believe that there's something beyond this mundane life... and basing ones beliefs solely off the need for that belief is, in my opinion, wrong.

Quite sorry, but you sir have merited the  emoticon, combined with a :ohnoes: with a fresh hint of :-s .

Do you understand the concept of bond energy being retained within the molecules of our body at all? Do understand how we use the energy from the food we eat? Take a biology class for Christ's sake, or rethink what you're saying for a second.

Please, for your own sake, listen in biology class when you take it. The energy is still in your body when you die.. in the ATP, in the sucrose, trigclycerides (sp?), in the cells... it's retained in the bond energy of every last molecule. Do you think that as soon as someone dies, *poof*, all the energy in their body is gone? Disregarding the fact that that's completely illogical in matters of physics... if that were true, how the heck would carnivores that kill their prey be able to survive? Why would decomposers eat our remains if there was no useable energy there?

Understand? The energy is still in your body when you die, in the nutrients, being used into your very last breath. It doesn't dissappear, it doesn't all just leave the body.

It's still in their, ready to be used in the Circle of Life. You've watched the Lion King, havn't you :P ?

You're welcome and thanks.

With the egotisical/inferiority jazz humans have going on, there will always be people believing in souls. That's human nature, and I don't think it's wrong, but quite the opposite. Belief in a soul tends to (sometimes) push people to be better or whatever to make their soul prepared for whatever after-life. While such beliefs can lead to wars, maiming, etc. it is part of being human to have such things happen. If it wasn't because of religion and souls we'd find another reason to kill each other (as many other wars have shown). I try to look at the more individual, positive effects the belief in a soul has on people. A great number of my friends have turned their lives around for the better when (re-)gaining a belief in a soul. I was kind of opposite, because I changed my life for the better after losing belief in a soul. Whatever works for people. ::'

Edit:

It's still in their, ready to be used in the Circle of Life. You've watched the Lion King, havn't you :P ?

Actually, since all energy needed for the primary functions of said Circle come from the sun, and we can't return energy to the sun, it's more of a Downword Spiral of Eventual Doom. Yay for random Earth Science courses with slightly depressed professors!
