The most overused song on soundtracks?

Featured Replies

Which song, in your opinion, is overused the most on movie and TV soundtracks? For me it's Hallelujah, originally written by Leonard Cohen, although the Jeff Buckley version is probably used the most. It's a very spiritual song that has a lot of Christian symbolism in the lyrics. The Jeff Buckley version is known for an incredibly powerful delivery through Buckley's beautiful voice and the very sober production, featuring only an accousic guitar. It's an incredibly moving song, but like I said before, it seems to be used everywhere these days, from Shrek to The OC, seemingly without regard for whether the song fits the scene or not.. In my opinion that really devalues what's otherwise one of the greatest songs ever.

Ode an die Freude lyrcis by Goethe, music by Beethoven (9th symphony)don't know how it is called in english (ode to joy or something probably)

Barber's Adagio For Strings.

It's used about 5 times in Platoon. They should have just used it once #-o

The opening music from 2001: A Space Odyssey. I'm not even sure where that music is from, or if they made it up or not. But it's definitely overused in movies today. 2001 definitely deserved it though.

And yes, kelem ryu, his 9th symphony is named/referred to as Ode to Joy in America.

the Reqiem for a dream music is all over the place now.

Its even the background music on sky sports news

Ah okay.

...although it's not quite correct. Goethes poem is called ode to joy. I don't know exactly how the poem met the 4th act of the 9th symphony. EDIT: Oops - Ode to joy is by Schiller. Oh well.. Goethe and Schiller were friends anyway.

Was gonna say, pretty much every 2nd video on YouTube has it.

Yes, and it pisses me off. Awesome track, but raped by rubbish :(

I really don't know which is overused, Hallelujah is used a hell of a lot, true. But after that, I have nothing - drawing a blank really.

Probably James Brown - I Feel Good....

Solsbury Hill by Gabriel is pretty overused too... I hear it in a lot of trailers as well as movies.

Isn't Ode to Joy just the last movement in the 9th Symphony? Or the bit that everyone knows at least.

I'd go for Ride of the Valkyries.

La lune ne garde aucune rancune.

I got my hair cut!!!

Surprised no one said 'O Fortuna'. That's gotta be the most overrused track, since forever. Used to create a 'dramatic' feel even when there is none in the first place. :P Also very used in parodies, with amusing effects, sometimes.

Chariots of Fire by Vangelis.

Also an overused song, yes.

That hurt my ears. The Rufus Wainwrite version is the best IMO.

I never really pay attention to sound tracks, although I might remember if a film had a good one or not. I liked shreks.

Thanks Venomai for this super sig and Kwimbob for the awesome avatar!

Rufus Wainwright did an amazing version of it live at Glastonbury this year. It was incredible.

Works perfectly in Apocalpyse Now, not so much in anything else.

"Da mihi castitatem et continentam, sed noli modo"

Haven't heard it in many movies, but it's in commercials all the time:

Here It Goes Again - O.K. Go

Bought it on iTunes before many people knew about it. Now it's so overused that I can't stand to hear it anymore. The music video is original though.

Club Foot by Kasabian - It's an ok song, but alot of action sequences, especially in games, use it to overkill.

The song used for the opening sequence for the first Austin Powers film, also.

You should watch the music video on iTunes. It'll make you go "What the hell?"

Edit:

Just to clarify, I wasn't telling you to watch the video. I was telling anyone else.

"The Hey Song" i forget who did the original though <.<

but its used in virtually any sports related movie you can think of
