A bad rap for hip-hop

Globe and Mail (AP)

September 25, 2007

By Jim Abrams

Washington - Two rappers, sitting side-by-side in an ornate House hearing room, went in different directions Monday on the need for hip hop artists to expunge their work of sexist and violent language.

One, Master P, apologized to women for past songs that demeaned them, while another was defiant.

Former gangsta rapper Master P, whose real name is Percy Miller, told a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearing that he is now committed to producing clean lyrics. The angry music of his past, he said, came from seeing relatives and friends shot and killed.

But he said now that he doesn't want his own children to listen to his music, "so if I can do anything to change this, I'm going to take a stand and do that."

"I want to apologize to all the women out there," he said. "I was honestly wrong."

But rapper and record producer Levell Crump, known as David Banner, was defiant as lawmakers pressed him on his use of offensive language. "I'm like Stephen King: horror music is what I do," he said in testimony laced with swear words. "Change the situation in my neighbourhood and maybe I'll get better," he told one member of Congress.

The two rappers were joined by music industry executives and scholars. They disagreed over who was to blame for sexist and degrading language in hip-hop music but were united in opposing government censorship as a solution.

"If by some stroke of the pen hip-hop was silenced, the issues would still be present in our communities," Mr. Crump said. "Drugs, violence, sexism and the criminal element were around long before hip-hop existed."

David banner is not who I agree with totally. As you can read above(but between the lines).

As much as I hate the stereotypical rap lyrics, it's not government's place to nanny us.

honestly get off their nuts, let them make their music...I truly lost faith in the mainstream hip hop artists that everyone listens to besides a few lil wayne songs here and there tho he's been getting real annoying and have rather sided with old songs and old artists...

I appreciate women as a person and don't objectify them in the slightest manner but really-it's their music. You don't see people jumping all over the painters and sculpture artists for doing nude paintings/sculptures eh? No one's taking jabs at the porn industry? Seriously, hip hop isn't the only art form to degrade women, I'm sure many rock artists do it too, just no lyrically. Banner made a point...if the government wants them to change THEIR lyrics then the government should solve THE HOOD'S problem so it DOESN'T get written about in the present tense....if you get me

this isnt anything I've not heard before, artist growing up and changing their minds about certain songs, none (or very few) of the artist of any genre practice what they preach anyways. You don't see a horror movie director going out and killing people like what happened in his movies, the same goes for music, they are just making a point and its art.

And I'm not a rap fan either.

Then I invite you to listen to Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Talib Kweli, among others.

I'm sure Kanye West has never rapped, or mentioned, living in a ghetto - given his middle class upbringing.

Why don't women wear watches?

Best part of this topic. ^^

I hate rap music. Sure, seldom are there guys who rap about something that isn't shooting people, selling drugs, CRUNK, all those other stereotypical gangster lyrics, and kuddos to them, but there is just too many people that DO that ruin the whole genre for me. Just turn on the radio and you'll see what I mean.

SMH @ this entire topic:

Aaaaaaaand CUE! arguement about rap is crap, no it's not, etc etc etc.

Word.

No matter what the Lyrics are, it still sucks.

No matter what Good Charlotte's lyrics are, they still suck.

Do you realise how stupid that sounded? I don't even listen to Good Charlotte, so why would I say such a stupid thing? Ask yourself the same question.

I know its stereotipical but thats all the rap I've heard.

So we should judge everything by stereotyping? Which would make you a preteen, depressed, wrist-slitting suburbanite, right?

Which I don't think you are. So there ya go, stereotyping = wrong. Don't try to back up one stereotype and condemn another.

Yes, I'm sure that these million-dollar music stars still live in the "ghetto"

Relevance? If I ever became a musician, you can be damn sure that I'm going to write about my past. Sure, some don't execute like they should, but the point still stands.

Wow, the second I saw that "seldom are there guys who rap something that isn't..." I knew that you weren't going to know what you were talking about. You don't know anythign about rap, if you did, you'd realise outside of the mainstream, there's not much rappign about shooting, drugs, crunk (this one especially).

And don't use the radio as a reason. Radio music displays mainstream of ALL genre, the radio is the prime example for mainstream music of ANY genre. If you're using the radio to find music you'd like, then your judgement is pretty questionable.

Rap sucks for everything it stands for.

Yeah. Anti-racism, fairness, equality, critcism of corrupt politics, love, friendship, respect, religion, and enlightment of other cultures sucks.

I seriously LOVE getting in rap debates with the biased people on these boards nowadays, 'cause I always win them because they never know what they're talking about, assuming they're experts because they've heard hip-hop on MTV and the radio. :D

But anyway, both Banner and Master P were correct (though I don't listen to either of them). Master P wasn't exactly supporting women's rights with his lyrics, but it's good to know he's willing to apologize and change for it.

Too bad he's about 10 years late now, being an instrumental figure in the rise of the South, which lead to the apparent death of hip-hop..

And Banner's right too. Why is the government getting so upset over people rapping about the ghetto? If they would DO somethign about the impovershed neighborhoods and projects across America, there'd be no backlash from rappers. Sure, Banner isn't the example that should be used of someone talking about the ghetto (I think Nas, Talib Kweli, etc. would be a much better example), but that doesn't mean that the current situations of ghettos and projects aren't in need of change.

Why don't women drive? [hide]because there's no highway between the bedroom and the kitchen.[/hide]That being said, I despise (most) rap. Some rap is ok, but to much of it is sexist, racist, etc.
