Nom
OMG! So you mean that planet number 12, which orbits around it's own star, that somehow passes close to Earth while ignoring gravitational forces from our entire solar system is going to cause the end of the world in 2012, which happens to be the same year the Mayan calendar ends? NO WAI!
kelem_ryu
Shouldn't astronomers be aware of objects in close proximity to earth? (This is a real question, how much is known about close space?) If this scenario was real, what would (or could) you do about it? Nothing i guess, besides being scared -.- Well about the year 2012 and the ending of the Mayan calendar (as i already wrote on another thread): I read that on the precise time, when this calendar ends the earth sund and the center of the galaxy will make a conjunction, wich happens about every 20.000 years. This is either an astronomical fact or it isn't. It should verifiable anyway. The source was some magazine i read at the dentist, so i guess this is probably true, since it isn't terribly unbelievable anyway. Assuming it is true it would have astrological implications. It would be something like the beginning of a new year, or a new season in a larger scale. I have no clue what exact implications this would have. I'm going to assume that nothing fancy will happen at all, but we'll see anyway. From an astrologers point of view this seems like a big event, but in astrology nothing happens by "light switch principle". This conjuncnion would be the culmination of a process, like for example midsummer is the culmination of summer. Yet summer is a process and there doesn't happen anything special on midsummer. It's just the longest day in the year and from this point on the days get shorter. For a Cyclus lasting as long as this one (20.000 years), we shouldn't notice anything special at this date. We don't even notice anyting special at midsummer after all. We just notice something special at very short cycles like the day (sunrise, midday, sunset and such). I could of course argue from some different point of view that the year 2012 will bring something special, but if that should be the case, we would see anyway. Personally i do hope (of course) that something cool happens, but i won't be dissapointed if nothing happens at all. I wouldn't mind something cool happening at any time. I don't count on it and i am certainly not waiting for something to happen (well sometimes i'm waiting for a download to finish =P).

FalconBomba
If this were remotley true, I'd be building a super bunker with domesticated mooses, a hydroponics system, and invent cold fusion to keep my pc alive and everything else down there so I could continue talking to everyone else out there who did the same. (Most of the people on Tip.it probably being smart enough to do the same.) This is totally false though, first of all how can it orbit its own star and orbit the sun. (or Sol if you want to be technical) There is no nearby stars that aren't hundreds of lightyears away, Alpha-centuri is the closest. No way it's in the kupier belt. Second NASA or some other space agency would be freaking out and building something to stop it with the millitary and every war would be postponed as everyone works together on building something to save our {crayons}. Third actual documentation by a creditable space agency would be needed. And fourth, everyone knows that Atlantis was sunk by aliens 8-) They were having a frat party don't you know. llamster
If there was a large planet close enough to collide with us in 2012, we would've noticed millenia ago. You fail. Lenin64
:XD: :XD: :XD: :XD: The only way to describe this. First off, brown dwarves are failed stars. Rather small, I think it would be more likely that it would orbit the planets, not the other way around. Plus, the nearest brown dwarf is part of a binary brown dwarf star system close by, but outside the solar system, past Proxima Centauri, which is 4 LY away. Plus, nothing catastrophic happened 3600 years ago, no mass extinction, immense tsunamis, etc. Also, modern technology has spotted galaxies towards the end of the universe. We would be able to see a brown dwarf near our own sun, and the data would have been released to the general community, like everything else we've discovered. Coincidentally, I've also heard that Betegeuse has gone Hypernova and the light will hit Earth, with intense gamma and X-Ray radiation...between 2010 and 2015! What a coincidence! I've also heard an asteroid will hit us, the universe will end with the Big Rip, and monster earthquakes destroying Earth, all around 2010-2020. This is just another "ZOMG The end is near!!" thing and will not happen. But I certainly can't frikkin' wait till 2012. Command the Murderous Chalices! wakka102
I'm going to be one not to laugh at this, simply because there are so many different theories, that have come from different groups of people, and different time eras, that all point to something happening in 2012. I think its quite interesting, whether theirs any truth to it or not, who knows, its not like we could change anything if there was any truth to an event happening in 2012, but if something does happen it'll make you wonder... I dont think theres much truth to the event you're speaking about, but there are alot of theories on something occuring in 2012, that should be a neat year (if we survive it :ohnoes: )

Satenza
2012 is a year not a day. With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.
