Does watching it in the theatre make the whole movie experie

-nce better?

For me, obviously. I've watched movies on my computer, my TV, etc. but sometimes, when I feel like watching a really good film. I just wish that I was watching this on the big screen.

The only thing that makes me feel like I wasted money on the theatres is the $10 ticket (20 usually, since I pay for the gf) and I have to watch through commercial for something I already paid for

Of course. Movies are made for the big screen, not for a t.v., Computer, an I-pod or a PSP. Especially those last two annoy me a lot.

For example: on DVD I recognize that the Apartment is a good movie, and I enjoy it a lot. But when I saw it in cinema it moved me a lot and it had a far greater impact on me.

Also, when you're watching a movie at home it's more likely that you'll be distracted. You pause for going to the toilet, you pause for getting something to eat, you pause for taking the telephine etc. And at the cinema, you're in a completely dark room fully concentrating on and losing your self in what is happening on that huge screen.

absolutely.

i saw 300 at the cinema and it blew me away. I've watched it again multiple times on DVD but it'll never be as good.

But also remember it's difficult to judge watching a movie in the big screen and watching it on DVD fairly, as in most cases the former comes before the latter, and the first viewing will probably have a much greater impact/feeling than the following views.

I don't really like going to the cinemas that much, I generally only go if my friends really want to go see something, and the movie doesn't seem like utter rubbish. I actually think it takes away some of the experience. Sure, it's great seeing a good movie on a huge IMAX screen with surround sound, but I'm mostly referring to the people who go there. It always seems like there's at least one or two groups of obnoxiously loud kids that talk, scream and laugh at inappropriate times. It just kills the experience for me.

But then again, one of my friends compared going to the cinemas to going to music concerts... so I suppose some people really like it. Either that or he's been to some really crappy concerts.

No, it's not even about that. When I watch movies before my time, I just end up wanting to have watched it on a theatre.

Well, there are definite cons against a cinema, namely when it's crowded, filled with noisy kids and people with crisps bags.

But the pro's far outweigh the cons. Whenever I have the chance to see a favourite film on the big screen, I do so, even if I've seen it before. How2PK worded it perfectly. You can lose yourself more, you're more involved, you have the impression of being "in" the film, not simply watching it from a distance. The great sound helps a lot as well.

After a real great film in the cinema, you have this feeling of sort of waking up in reality as the credits begin to roll, you know? You blink a few times, shake yourself a bit, yawn, wipe away remnant tears,... It's as if you've been on a far away trip.

Indeed! And when you're going to the matin̮̩̉̉e you walk out of the cinema, and then you've got that bright light shining in your face. That makes it even better. Or if you go in the evening you go to the caf̮̩̉̉ after the movie, have a drink and discuss the movie. Now where is the charm in watching a movie at home on DVD, then turn of the player and have a drink at home. Instead of a brown caf̮̩̉̉.

Yes, for all the reasons Daan has said. Unfortunately the experience is easily spoiled. Noisy people (kids), people throwing popcorn as well as people laughing or talking about whats going to happen next are some of the word culprits for ruining a cinematic experience. As does having a poor seat, either uncomfortable or offering a bad view.

The best times ive had in cinemas is when they have been almost empty. I love the immersion of light and sound.

I love going to the theater when there isn't too many annoying kids around, mostly for the same reason everyone else posted.

Its fun too to be able to discuss the movie on the way back home too. :P

Like the way your always blaming the kids.

Last 3/4 times i went it was full of noisy adults and the kids sitting there not talking.

Because in all my experience is HAS been the kids being noisy.

Watching on a big sound system, huge screen - yes. Watching at the cinema specifically - no, because of the reasons above - crying kids, dirty scallys being a pain in the arse, sticky seats, etc. I went to see Good Luck, Chuck the other night and some pillocks at the back started playing music from their phones halfway through the film. OOH, YOU BAD MEN.

Exception is probably romantic comedy films, all that sort of stuff - I prefer to watch them at home with booze, my own (not 3.80 for some nachos) nice food and mates to have a laugh with and not worry about noise.

I agree, that certain types of movies (particularily action and sci-fi), are best enjoyed on the big cinematic screens.

For that extra special kick, I sometimes even visit the IMAX. Now that's an experience.

I'm really into my movies, so much so that I bought a 42 inch plasma TV two years ago. It cost me a pretty penny, but it's worth it so i can really enjoy my movies with a close-to-cinema quality.

Yeh bet you save alot in the long run if you want for movies to come out on dvd.

Not really..I like it. The only 2 series that've made me go 'WOW..I WISH I COULDA SAW THIS IN THE THEATER!!!' are the Star Wars original trilogy and the Lord of the Rings trilogy...I didnt get into it until after the 3rd was on DVD :(

If there were no other people in the theater, theater would win hands down. Having all those other people annoy the crap out of you sucks. I am a picky movie watcher, most of the time absolute quiet is a necessity.

However theater still wins, even with the annoyances. Once I get a pretty big HDTV (42in+) that might change, but probably not.

Also there are a few times where crowds aren't bad, for example the 12:01 showing of Episode III. Thousands of people there, a few hundred in the room I was in. It was really part of the experience. Although I did get annoyed at the crowd a few times.

It is a great experience like others said above. Besides kids being noisy, there's nothing more annoying than a guy shaking his leg and hence shaking the entire row during the entire movie.

I think so. There's nothing like watching a really good movie on a giant screen. It puts you into the scene that doesn't compare to watching it on your tv. It's a great experience, most effective when enjoyed with friends. :)

I dunno, I guess in theory it's better, but not in practice for me.

2 cases: I went to see a movie, I believe it was the Bourne Ultimatum. It's 30 seconds into the movie; I'm very pleased no one has taken seat next to me. However, a very, very large woman comes in after it started, sat down, and guzzled coffee for the first little while (quite annoying), and then for the rest of the movie had the most disgusting breath you've ever smelled. Very displeasing indeed.

Another, this one is quite funny in reality: Went to see 16 Blocks (not a great movie to begin with), and some old brods came in, again with one sitting next to me. Anyways, she is wearing a very heavy coat and is talking to her friend (this was during the starting credits). So she turns, and knocks my drink so that it was just sorta tipped, then fell back into place. *phew* I think. Next thing I know, she turns again, this time not so much luck: when she turns to look ahead my drink fell right in the seat behind her. I freeze. She doesn't notice. I'm confused. My friends start cracking up. I have no expression, just look forward.

A few minutes later, I used the light from a cell phone to check the floor. The drink was no where to be found. She must be sitting on it. It must be under that heavy coat.

More time passes, about 15 minutes, she screams and gets up; her coat is all wet. I don't say anything: It was her own fault. She has no idea what happened, but she and her friends leave. I was somewhat relieved, but very mad that I had spent 4 dollars on a drink that I had hardly touched. And how do you concentrate on a movie after that?

I am so much more distracted by terrible movie occurances in cinemas than at home. Despite How2Pk's objection to it, I love that you can pause, rewind, etc. That way if somethings distracting you, you can deal with it, or you have to go to the bathroom, you can without missing anything. Or if you miss an important line, or you don't understand what just happened, you can rewind (I do this often in subbed movies, and Memento...)

Movies at home are very nice, and I have a great setup, with good sound, and a very comfortable couch. I only go to the cinema when I have to see a certain movie NOW.

Shame that everybody is suffering so much from the people around them. Here we hardly have that. And if it's there it hardly spoils the experience for me. :o No matter how big your plasma screen is, or how good your sound set. Cinema is always best. :)

I do get fairly annoyed at the people around me, but more annoying for me is the price. You get ripped off something awful, not just the ticket prices, but the refreshments are bloody ridiculous.

That being said, I would go to the cinema if it was cheaper, but it just doesn't represent value for money for me.

I can't remember the last time I was extremely bothered by people at the theatre.

I'm sure I've bothered a guy on a date once though

Yeah. 10 bucks for pop and nachos when it would cost less than $3 if i buy from the grocery

This is why I always sneak a bag of chips inside my jacket and some drinks.

Cinema is obviously the best, no matter what kind of movie you want to watch. I mean, I watched Saw 4 in the cinema, and then at home, never even came close to the quality and atmosphere I felt at the cinema... But, saying that, try to pick a night when it isn't that crowded, or it's usually a darkened hell... :ohnoes:
