Do Glasses affect your life seriously?

c_play22

Recommended Posts

Everyone in my family wears glasses. : / Personally, getting glasses or the effects of wearing them is nothing. People only remarked how different I looked at the beginning. Whether they meant it as good or bad, who cares, as long as I can see. :XD:

But yes, wearing glasses will have drawbacks like being active in sports. You'll have to wear contacts (sp?) instead. Wearing glasses is partly a fashion statement too (not to say that people where them because it looks good). Their choice of frame style will affect others' judgment on them like how clothing does. My glasses frame are pretty casual, nothing that would jump out at people's attention.

Anyways, I have not run into any glasses-wearing discrimination but only disadvantages and personal fears (breaking them, losing them, and etc.)

Let's face it, part of the nerd stereotype involves glasses and so you will risk being automatically labeled accordingly.

But I like being labeled as a nerd :(

Frankly I can't understand why you would want to but hey, it's your call.

When I wore glasses they effected me a little.. I was more careful with what I did because I NEEDED them to see and I didn't want to break them. I was always taking a moment to clean them so I could see easily again and stuff like that. And yeah, I was labeled as a geek. But I got contacts and they're amazing. Labeled as a geek? Not anymore. Nobody even knows I need glasses unless they get up close and look carefully at my eyes. I don't have to clean glasses or be careful with what I do anymore. Life is 10x better with contacts than glasses imo.

:| I've had the same frames since I was in grade six (Obviously different lenses), and not once have they become broken or anything (Loose screws perhaps, but that is to expected).

You don't really have to be careful with glasses, just as long as you don't force any pressure on them.

I like the label because I feel that being a nerd puts me at an overwhelming advantage in the social world. Most nerds are stereotyped as weaker, more knowledgeable people, that have less friends. Unfortunately, they don't understand that the stereotype actually belongs to a social outcast, not a nerd. You would probably not believe how many times I've used this misunderstanding to my advantage as people are surprised by how strong I can actually be as well as how many people I know. Be smart just makes the lest intelligent grovel at my feet for help.

Ah ok, I see what you mean. Sounds to me like what you do is have people label you as a nerd but then you surprise them and show them all the un-nerdy qualities about you which makes you special. What you are doing is probably the greatest way to use stereotypes to your advantage.

The thing about stereotypes is that they label a person that satisfies a bunch of criteria. If stereotypes held true, then there would be categories of people but since we are all unique then stereotypes are a load of crap. So basically, stereotypes only look at one part of you and assume that you're just that. So what you can do is let someone place you in that category and then surprise them with all sorts of qualities that they wouldn't expect.

Kind of did for me. I wore glasses most of the life and I thought I looked better without them. Oh well, I wear contacts now. 8-)

I have had glasses since the 4th grade and I am now in 10th. I haven't once had anyone but my cousin say something mean about them and he was just joking around. I live in a small town where most kids in my school know each other or know the majority of people. Theres about 800 kids in my school and I know about 200 I'd say but thats because I changed schools after 8th grade. I won't use contacts because my eyes are sensitive. Like if I get a spec of dust in my eye I can't stand it so I probably would get annoyed wearing them. And I think I will get farther in my career because of the stereotype of people with glasses are smart.

Though if you go in a dry environment, your contact lenses dry up quicker and you have to blink alot faster, which gets annoying sometimes <.<

I have glasses.

Some people say I look more like the "artistic hippie intellectual" type with them on but I don't think it actually changes how I'm treated. Also, some people assume I'm older when I'm wearing them (which is why I don't mind wearing them to bars :P).

I wear contacts when I'm trying to look pulled together (ie: for parties and dates). A lot of the people I meet outside of school don't know I even need glasses.

I hate wearing contacts, though... I tend to wear glasses most of the day.

Eh, apart from morons in grade school, not really.. But they'll come in handy when the US army start drafting again.. :D For once my bad eyes are good. \:D/

As for contacts, I avoid anything that has even a remote possibility of slipping to the back of my eye...

Mine don't affect me at all. Sometimes one of my friends will crack a joke about them, or someone will take them to be funny, but it is nothing that I take offense to. To me, getting used to wearing them and fearing what people may say and how you look in them is worse than what people actually do say.

It could just be the group of people I hang out with, but even in my classes nobody ever says anything, to anybody who wears them. It's just a common occurance to see someone wearing glasses.

I wear glasses and people make fun of me all the time. Every day I get called smelly and fat because I wear glasses. The kids always laugh and it makes me feel very bad. I wish they would stop. So yes, wearing glasses makes people make fun of me. Sometimes I even go home and cry. It's really painful to think about this...I'm gunna go eat some ice cream.

Hm, something tells me that if people are calling you melly and fat, it isn;t because of glasses. :-w

A large majority of people are cruel because someone is a little different to what they define as 'normal'. I know it's unfair but unfortunately it's one of these things that's going to go on forever.

I'd say yes, glasses can for some people but not for others. I myself had them at a relatively young age and noticed no difference in the way I was treated at the time.

Have to take them off when I play rugby or do wushu - that's it. Some people say I look intimidating without them though :-s

Could it be because you were squinting? They say I look mad because I needed to narrow my eyes to see. lol

Yeah, probably . I've always wondered why squinting helps me see better... maybe the same reason why I can see better with non-perscription sunglasses than just my plain, unaided sight.

I've essentailly avoided that stereotype because of my size. And I like to consider myself quite athletic compared to most people in my school/gym class. Also, the stereotype of a nerd is just someone that lacks confidence.

On a sidenote, you're like my French teacher. She admits she's a nerd/geek (I can't remember which one, she says there's a difference). In fact, I'd consider her anything but. She is obviously confident, I mean, it's hard to be funny to an entire high school class and not be confident, not to mention teach it.

You'd be surprised how many "geeks" and "nerds" are some of the funniest, outgoing people you can meet.

There's no such thing as regret. A regret means you are unhappy with the person you are now,

and if you're unhappy with the person you are, you change yourself. That

regret will no longer be a regret, because it will help to form the new,

better you. So really, a regret isn't a regret.

It's experience.
