Most over-rated band ever?

but i think acdc is most overrated. then it goes to pink floyd.

Pink Floyd is an acquired taste. You either like long drawn out intros or you don't. It's what most people find particularly bad about Pink Floyd. But I'll agree with you on AC DC.

They really get left behind by their contemporary "imitators" (Ash Ra Tempel and whatnot). I always thought of Floyd as a nice gateway band, though; and the Syd stuff as great.

TD's Phaedra > DSOTM

Rap and rock (Rock being just about anything anyone on these forums like) both hate each other, so neither are overrated or underrated, because for every person I know that likes one, another hates the other.

Oh, there's just so much more. Those two specific boundaries are demonic!

I couldn't even tell you, because I don't watch MTV/Much Music anymore. If we are ignoring contributions to the music industry, I think it's safe to say that every pioneer in a music genre is overrated. Why? Because they will be average. They wouldn't have anything of a similar sound to compare themselves to, which means that they are basically just making it up as the go along. That is why they can be considered good. They aren't good musically, they just helped form music as we know it today.

And believe it or not, I would say that Buckethead is an incredibly underrated artist. Most people will only listen to Jordan, which is a horrible song (And that is why they only hear that), but I quite like some of his other songs, like Soothsayer. I don't really like how he wears the mask, since it hides any emotion you could see.

Anything out of MTV is overrated, I just can't name anything specific there's so much.

When he played with Les Claypool in Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains was just awesome. Claypool and Buckethead in the same band is just pure talent bliss.

I really do like Battalions of Fear-era Blind Guardian. Really cheery speed metal.
That's my favourite Blind Guardian era also.

The newer stuff reminds me of Symphony X with too much emphasis on intense vocals. A Night at the Opera gives me a headache. It's not that I hate progressive power metal (hell, Symphony X is one of my favourite bands) but there's not enough of the "metal" element in later Blind Guardian works. It's too overdubbed and too symphonic; if I wanted vocals + symphony orchestra I'd go listen to Mahler's 8th or something.

Silver's right about Dark Passion Play.I tried to avoid the songs,in case I hated them, but once I listened to them, some maintain the old style with Tarja, and some are new-ish.Which is good, the first two albums were awesome, but after a few the same style gets boring,a little.

As for Kamelot.I love the guy's vocals,he has a great way of expressing the feelings he needs to.

DPP is too gothic metal influenced for my liking; repetitive, simple riffs with slightly annoying vocals. Anette puts on a good live performance though and I'd daresay that the older Nightwish songs sound much fresher with her singing them. It's a new style and era for Nightwish and I hope that they continue with it; from what I've seen of their recent live performances they're settling into it quite well and it does sound pretty damn good.

And Roy is pretty good. As expected of a trained opera singer there's so much power behind his voice. It fits Kamelot's epic theme; one of the less cheesy bands I listen to.

Dragoonson, I'd recommend Dark Moor and Symphony X to you. The vocalists (from Dark Moor's self titled album onward) are reminiscent of Roy's style and the vocalist of Symphony X is a dead ringer for his voice. I can barely tell the difference.

edit lololol: most J-pop and other music from over there is overrated by weeaboos etc. not that I don't like it; it's the catchy-as-hell pop melodies and cheesy lyrics that's a part of its appeal. but it's definitely not good music by anyone's standards.

Indeed, I could listen to that speed metal stuff all night and perhaps a bit of Imaginations. Besides that, no thanks. I only tend to stay within the 80s of power metal. Nothing too overdone and it's all kick [wagon].

Almost everything made in the past decade or two. Note the almost. I'll leave you to use your own personal preferences to determine which bands/artists are not included. If you don't like what I said, either respond with something constructive or don't respond at all.

I'll agree with that ;) .

Because they can. And it's just getting old. According to them nu-metal, which isn't even what they are anymore, isn't worthy of any praise.

Half-assed deathcore isn't really worthy of praise either.

You can try to make up as many genres as you want to try to half-[wagon] classify Slipknot, but the fact remains that Slipknot has a lot of talented musicians in their band. You might not like their music, stage antics, or how you might claim they wear masks for attention (As if they can't get it from their music. Last time I checked you can't see masks on the radio.), but they are talented. I don't like Dillinger Escape Plan AT ALL (I think their songs really blow actually), but those guys are extremely talented musicians and I can respect that.

Deathcore is a widely accepted genre. I didn't make it up. If you prefer something more general, let's call them metalcore! They're simply not metal though (and don't take this as a sign of not wanting a "popular" and "successful" band to intrude my 'metal dome'; there's worse bands in metal today). Too many In Flames-isms and other poppish crap. Also, where did I challenge their musical talent? It's rather lacking, but I simply don't care for musical talent. One of my favourite bands is Burzum, ffs. At the end of the day, who gives a flying [bleep] about antics, or the masks? When I listen to them on the radio...I can interpret the fact that they are [bleep]ing terrible and have no way to use any talent they might have. I have respect for things I don't like. I'm not a fan of Immortal, or Pink Floyd, but I can respect their influence. Slipknot, on the other had, I have no respect for. If you can't capitalise on your talent, then sorry... not worth my respect. PERIOD. QED.

Well considering they headline some of the biggest rock festivals and shows across the entire globe, I think they might be capitalizing on their talent, but hey, maybe that's just my misconstrued opinion.

My point is that having hundreds of millions of fans worldwide justifies, to me, that they're putting their talent to use in the correct way. I like metal a lot, Slipknot isn't even one of my favorite bands, but all the metal sub-genres just tend to blur and don't have much substance in my opinion. They're not the catalyst that TOOL or Pink Floyd may be, but they're still selling out massive venues worldwide. Whether or not their music is "easy to digest garbage" is your opinion, but that has nothing to do with their talent. They write songs that are filled with plenty of talent and people can realize that (With, of course, the exception of you and every other person who deems Slipknot as garbage).

I guess this post is a monument to how easy it really is to impress people these days, but I knew that the masses had horrible taste. They write melodic and easy to please songs and they have talent! Haha! Yes, why go any further than weakly rehash a proven formula? Let's be as shady as possible and follow each and every trend that comes along! nu-metal isn't popular? well...switch it around and let's become deathcore, the current flavour of the decade! HAHA I GUESS THEY JUST SEEM TO BLUR ALONG WITH EVERY OTHER METAL SUBGENRE. HEHEHEHHEHEHE HAHAHAHAH!

No [cabbage] it's my opinion and I stand by it. I can't recognize talent in con men who follow whatever is popular and can't even make a popular and widely used formula unlistenable. They lack uniqueness or the talent to make the common....amazing! QED HAHAHAHEHEHAEHAHEHAHAHAHAHHEAE

They are not putting their musical talent to use in the correct way. they are putting their "lack of musical talent/(insert talent that has nothing to do with music here)" to use in the correct way. they may be good playing their instruments, but when it comes to composing music, they are just plain horrible. and just a reminder: FAME=/=MUSICAL TALENT

Why even try with that idiot? Honestly, there is no point whatsoever. I'd get better replies if I argued with a tree stump.

Coldplay.

*Waits for applause*

Agreed, even though I do like them.

More Japanese overratedness: Dir en grey. Think Linkin Park for the Japanese and weeaboos. They're really horrible and proof that Japan largely fails at making a metal band; sure, there was X Japan in the '80s, but remind me of how good they were? Maximum the Hormone isn't too bad, but they're very, very strange. l'arc~en~ciel aren't too great either.. just boring.

Radiohead are pretty overrated. They're basically Coldplay with a few differences.

Ugh, tell me about it. X Japan's Art of Life was a painful listen. 10(?) min Piano solo, ffs!

No the only magazine I read about music is Rolling Stone and Slipknot isn't in RS. I don't follow trends at all, I really hate mainstream radio and Slipknot is probably the most mainstream band I listen to. I just do not find them to be particularly terrible as everyone else does. And thanks for telling me that I just like whatever is in at the time, because I've been listening to Slipknot for around 9 years now and I don't get my new music from the radio.
