July 19, 200817 yr I just re-read His Dark Materials recently, since I was so young when I last read them I don't really remember much of them. Christ I'd forgotten how powerful and deep they were, the final few chapters of The Amber Spyglass nearly had me choking up. "Da mihi castitatem et continentam, sed noli modo"
July 19, 200817 yr Has anyone here read the quartet that starts with Mortal Engines? By Phillip Reeve. The others are Predator's Gold, Infernal Devices and A Darkling Plain. Easily my favourite series of books, as far as i'm aware it is an incredibly original idea. I spose the best description of the genre i can give is steampunk.. anyone who enjoy's sci-fi/fantasy will definitely enjoy these. The last chapter of A Darkling Plain is the best chapter of any book i have ever read, incredibly moving. On another note, his dark materials, artemis fowl, The wind on fire and the lord of the rings are all series that i rate highly. EDIT: Oh, and Winnie the Pooh, the Complete Collection of Stories and Poems, An incredibly amazing book, i don't know how i forgot it. "A disbelief in magic can force some poor souls into believing in authority and business"

July 20, 200817 yr I'm going to come out and agree with everyone on this thread that has said Stephen King. Currently finishing up book 4 of The Green Mile, and he's the only author I've ever seen that actually makes you care what happens to the characters. Apparently you haven't read many books. Hell, even Harry Potter, as dull as the books were, kept me reading because I wanted to see who won and how, and what happened to everyone (although the ending was rather predictable, she still managed to make me read all 7 books, though I only bought 2, read the rest from friends or at Books-A-Million, a 5 minute walk from my house). Although Stephen King wrote some amazing books, there are many authors out there that do the same. Terry Goodkind did a fantastic job with this, as did Philip Pullman (I just picked these two because a lot of people seem to know who they are, at least on this thread). OT, does anyone have any recommendations for medieval times? Anything about like Ancient Greece, or the Roman Empire (both the rise and fall). You know, Caesar, Alexander the Great, all that good stuff, going maybe into the Renaissance. I'd love to read a bit more into the crusades. The problem with books like this is, it's hard to read them without thinking I'm back in 5th grade reading from some standard history textbook that's taught me nothing and served more as a pillow than a book. A book like The Last of the Wine by Mary Renault would be good (an amazing read, even for people who aren't quite history buffs, although it is a bit [lot] mature). Even something like To Kill a Mockingbird, or Night by Elie Weisel (sp?), that teaches history through a story. Also, has anyone ever read Dante's Inferno, and if so, is it really an amazing book? And how hard is it to read? I've been wanting to read it but before I go and buy or search for it, I'd like to know if it's worth the money, and if I can even read it in the first place. Hell, even Harry Potter, as dull as the books were, kept me reading because I wanted to see who won and how, and what happened to everyone Regardless of your opinion on whether the books are dull, I agree that HP has some excellent, 3-dimensional characters that are portrayed as very human and the reader does care what happens to them. It seems that Twilight is to be made into a movie. I've seen some mention of it on this thread, and I don't want to offend anyone but I've heard that those books are really bad. Like, Inheritance-level bad*, or worse. Is there anyone who has read the books who can give me an idea if this is true? Try to be as objective as possible, though I know bias is going to swing it regardless. *I will gladly explain to anyone who disputes the claim that Inheritance is terrible, but for now I'm going to let it lie.

July 20, 200817 yr On another note, his dark materials, artemis fowl, The wind on fire and the lord of the rings are all series that i rate highly. This line pretty much sums mine up. To be honest I cried towards the end of Firesong. Its so moving. along with The edge chronicles series, all 12 of them, but especially the first 6. And also the Abhorsen series (i.e. sabriel, lirael, abhorsen and maybe beyond the wall.) also Shade's Children by Garth Nix is awesome. Pure awesome.

It's also done by Nix. There's six in all, but I got mine in two books, three in each. If you like his stuff, I recommend this saga. Speaking of Nix, does anyone here read his Keys to the Kingdom series? I'm not sure if it's finished, up to Saturday, I think. sleep like dead men wake up like dead men

The Keys to the Kingdom are up to Saturday, which will be released August 1st. Good books, though Lady Friday read like too much filler.
July 23, 200817 yr Author I got a book titled Manchester ghosts, my state is pretty raw. If anyone wants to hear a TRUE story out of it, PM me.

July 24, 200817 yr Author My favorite series' are Lord of the rings and Harry Potter My favorite book is "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" Favorite genre: fantasy The Deathly Hallows was good, but the ending wanted me to burn the book. It made the whole book suck, now im mad that I waited 6 hours in line on a freezing night to get it. Yes, that was one cold summer night.

I paid like fifty buck (more) to get it first.I wanted a damn refund for 3 days and didn't touch a book  .The ending really bastardised it.And not just the last chapter,I mean if the whole series was one book, and the ending was proportionate to the length, thats basically the 2nd half.Thoroughly disappointing, wanted to see him maybe playing quidditch (did he?I erased as much memory as I could)... so i herd u liek devarts? If you look at me and feel offended by my 666-ism,think.I could be just as offended by your "cross".[hide=This's why I'm hot]The Eleventh Commandment:Thou Shalst only say "Amen, brother".Amen, brother :lol:Amen, brudda (referring to the 10th commandment)amen Bruder! Yeah Harry should definitely have been a quidditch player, waste of talent if you ask me :wall:
July 24, 200817 yr Author I don't understand. Such a good series degraded with one horrible ending. Rowling just took the advantage that everyone wanted to know what happened at the end and didn't attempt to make the ending better. Because seriously, she could of made it better if she wanted. That's my opinion.

That's my opinion. Well the ending wasn't the bad.. but the epilouge was horrible. I don't really count that as " part of the book" tho, just an addition, but the book was great in my opinion. 99 Hunter - November 1st, 200899 Cooking -July 22nd, 200999 Firemaking - July 29th, 201099 Fletching - December 30th, 2010
July 24, 200817 yr Author It did suck. Bad. The epilogue was disgusting, worse than the ending. Every poster from now say if they liked it or not, I will keep track on my first post.
July 24, 200817 yr Ugh, I personally hated every Harry Potter (For the most part) after the third or fourth one. Before the last one came out, I hoped that it would be some surprising ending, that would end up making me like it, but come on...Wayyyyy too predictable. And it could have still been a happy ending... By the way, I basically finished the first four Ranger's Apprentice books. They were awesome. (Just a note though, I tend to find everything awesome) I could've sworn that there were more out in the US though...Anyway, that means I have to start the Sword of Truth. I have to go on two full-day trips, and in between there's two weeks in Taiwan (Plenty of reading time). So I might be able to finish two or three by the end of the summer. Cenin pân nîd, istan pân nîd, dan nin ú-cenich, nin ú-istach.Ithil luin eria vi menel caran...Tîn dan delu.
July 25, 200817 yr ^You're Taiwanese? Can I get some Jay Chou songs in Han Yu Pin Yin?I'm trying to improve =P I actually started to dislike Harry Potter from Goblet, seriously, the length is just to show off.And mom agrees =D.Why didn't Harry play Quidditch after Voldy?Because Rowling didn't think hard, she just wanted to publish it on the day (7/7/07,right?I got it at 7 am sharp -.-) for vanity.A good book has passion, not a rushed dateline (which is why my 30k words in 30 days is going to suck [wagon]...) so i herd u liek devarts? If you look at me and feel offended by my 666-ism,think.I could be just as offended by your "cross".[hide=This's why I'm hot]The Eleventh Commandment:Thou Shalst only say "Amen, brother".Amen, brother :lol:Amen, brudda (referring to the 10th commandment)amen Bruder! July 25, 200817 yr Author I went to Barnes & Noble on the day of the release, and people were dressed up and had wands. There was a treasure hunt where you would get a riddle and have to find the next clue in the store, it was pretty cool helping my little brother with it.
