NickCini
Hi, I'm NickCini, some of you may know me from lightning chat, my Rs name is Ace Is Back. Anyway, I've recently took up running quite a bit, (and occasionally cycling when I cba to run) and I was wondering how many other tifers run, cycle, swim, or just generally exercise regularly. I would be quite interested to know how far/fast you run (or swim etc), how long you've been doing it, and what made you get into it. Also appreciated would be some tips on diet, I seem to struggle with eating the right foods to be honest. And finally, I'm looking at buying a pair of running shoes because my converse really do NOT like all this running malarky. Any tips on good shoes? I run a mile and a half, semi regularly, (when I can be arsed really) and I tend to run at 2-5am, because I don't like other people seeing me run lol. I got into it because a good tifer friend of mine said he was going for a run at 5am that morning, and I wasn't planning to sleep anyway lol. Also I would quite like to lose a bit of weight because although I don'tdo badly with the ladies. It surely can't hurt lol. Woah. Longer post that intended tbh. Meh. Look forward to reading your replies. Range_This11
I ran cross-country from 7th-9th grade (just graduated this year). I still occasionally run. I can keep a pretty fast pace when I'm running which is around 5:45-6:00 per mile depending on how far I'm running. I usually don't do a workout under 2 miles though, and I definitely do not have a good diet whatsoever. Lots of water helps along with lots of carbs. I usually only run past 10pm at night and never in the morning. rushrock
I ran regularly for crew, and now that the season's over I'll have to start a regular exercise routine up again to stay in shape. I might do cross-country in the fall, but I might not be able to survive it. I've run a mile in 7:26-30 I believe, and I could go lower if I wanted to see how fast I can actually run it. My friend introduced me to crew, and it turned out to be my perfect sport, to tell you the truth. But you have to stay in shape, and running helps with it. I have some really good Nike Shox that work for me. I wear them all the time, even when I'm not running. They're the perfect shoe, to be honest. I started off running and working out in crew with some Converse (the flat ones, not the tall All-Stars), and they were absolute [cabbage] in running and just walking too, to be honest. These Shox are great. I feel amazing with them on. I recommend them. As for the diet, you just gotta do it man. That's all I suggest. Get your vitamins and minerals in. Get your protein and your carbs in, especially right before a workout, but don't eat amounts that would make you sick when you're exercising. re4p3r1
well i wrestle and during the season i would go jogging just about everyday to keep in shape but now...i'm fat lol 5am really? i could never wake up that early
The_Who
I jog a few miles every other day and I also cycle every now and then. I swim some at the gym, but only for pure enjoyment.
Ragen
The best advice I can give is set yourself dates and times, then stick to them. If you only do it when you feel like it, it'll never get done. Make sure you feel out of breath and sweaty at the end of your session. If you don't, you aren't working hard enough. Running shoes/ good trainers are a must, converses wont be comfortable on your feet. I find Nike Airs to be comfortable but get a pair that don't squeak when you run - that nearly drove me insane. I run on a treadmill (does't count but running round here would probally end in morons chasing me and I don't fancy getting up early just so I can run in peace) for about 2 miles 3 times a week at a pretty intense level (for me ;) ). Thanks Venomai for this super sig and Kwimbob for the awesome avatar!
NickCini
Well, thank you everybody for the great response. converses wont be comfortable on your feet. I find Nike Airs to be comfortable I have a pair of air max's, was just reluctant to run in them as they are quite large. Would they be good to run in though? Anybody know? 5am really? i could never wake up that early Atm I am just occasionally going into school to sit exams, so I don't sleep regularly, I usually find myself playing Runescape at 5am. I love not having to do anything with my life atm lol. My friend introduced me to crew, and it turned out to be my perfect sport What is crew lol? And if you do all you can, that's all you can ever do. - Warren Rudman But men are men; the best sometimes forget. - William Shakespeare

deloriagod
I take karate classes 3 times a week. It's a hell of a workout (especially if you're hung over >.<). As far as running. I hate it. Can't stand it at all. But when I know I'm going to need to look my best in a month or so I'll do it just to slim down a bit. urbestfreind
I used to run almost every day, because it was a really good way to forget about problems and just have some fun. Running was really one of my passions. However, running is out of the question for me, or at least or any sort of long-distance running. A few injuries, including a dislocated kneecap that managed to tear the ligaments in my knee, requiring most of my summer to be stuck in a cast, then the hours of physical rehabilitation. Because of these injuries, I can not run for long or else I get sharp pains in my knees which have rendered me unable to walk for a time after. The closest I've gotten to running distance in the past 2 years is playing lacrosse. Even then I had to take periodic breaks (my coach was alright with it, unless we managed to piss him off to an epic level, which happened much too often). I do go riding a lot though. By riding I mean cycling for the most part, but I'm getting back into doing tricks. Me and a few friends of mine go out all over town about once a week. Our most recent excursion took us about 15 miles, with two 6-ish mile runs. I really enjoy riding, even though I cant do much else than just tail the others (much to the disdain of the guys of the group  ). I can do small J-hops though (for those that don't know, it's a wheelie (manual) with a jump thrown in at the end, not a bunny hop, which is just lifting both wheels of the ground at the same time, no manual thrown in). The only bad thing is, with any sort of outdoor exercise, I have to be careful, because I live in Florida. For those of you who don't know, in the summer, the low temperature is 105 (alright, that's usually the high, but still, it's bloody hot here). I get dehydrated rather easily (I passed out in lacrosse twice). Sorry for the long post by the way :-w O:) [hide=Funny Quotes]So you sucker punched a kid in the back of the head? Good job. What scares me is that you're like 10 years old.-.- im not that freaking youngYou were a couple years ago. It's not racist if its true.Hmm... Topazjewel
I don't run for fun. I prefer biking to get exercise. I used to play Ultimate Frisbee last summer with a bunch of friends, and that was a LOT of running, but all the guys are gone/going on their missions for 2 years (the last two are headed out this week actually) and us girls can't be bothered to organize it. I'll stick to swimming and biking, I think. Lower impact things.
IGoddessI
Yeah I used to run all the time like 5 times a week kept fairly fit. Then I got pregnant and I now roll off the couch ;) I'll get fit again once bubs is born. InkofDeath
I run, I do about 20 to 30 km's per day, sometimes all at once, other times I cut the distance in half, and have a 45 minute break. Just depends whether on what route or course I do, I do hills every third day, I think I get in 13 different hills, and repeat them all at least 2 times, one I do a third time. Every second day I go a fast pace, then sprint every 50 seconds for about 10 seconds (I usually end up having to cut the distance on this one). The first day I just run naturally, I don't push myself, but I make sure I'm going hard. You always have to challenge yourself when running, or else nothing will get done. When you get to a certain extent and your not pushing yourself, it's very easy to run and feel good, though it's enlightening, you need to sprint hard and get rid of that energy, or if you think you can, quicken your pace to get rid of it. Feeling good while running isn't the best idea, nor the point. You want to feel out of breathe, but not so much you can't concentrate. Drink a sip of water before you do a run. Important for various reasons I wasn't told - though it does prevent the build up of saliva that you can't swallow somewhat. Two steps = breath in twice. After that third step breathe it all out. Repeat. Bring the knees up, don't let them troddle on the ground, use your thigh muscles, too many people run with just their hip muscles and shins doing all the work, not enough people effectively uses their thigh muscles to their bets potential. When going up a hill, do not take long strides. Short steps, even if you feel like your walking, long strides require more energy, and you don't even complete the stride. Short steps you can also go quicker up hill than with long strides. Expand your chest cavity, right and left before running. Getting the lungs stretched is important, as they are doing 70% of the work, imo. Standing stretches: Neck stretch. (move you head to each side slowly) Shoulder stretch. (move your shoulders circularly without moving your arms) Arm stretch. (spin your arms in a circle, put your arm across your chest, and push in, as well put your arm behind your head, and push down on your elbow with your other arm) Chest Cavity Stretches. Stomach stretches - extremely important, getting stitches or pains in the stomach is horrible, stretch frontwards, backwards, sidewards 3x. Groin stretch. Thigh Stretch. Second Thigh Stretch - Bring your leg up to your chest, so your knee is touching your chest, push upwards so you feel it in the bottom of your thigh. Calfs - Cross your legs, and touch your toes. Ankles - Spin your ankles clockwise and anti-clockwise. Get down on the ground: Leg out, other leg in, touch foot and hold. Do both legs. Put your leg out, cross your other leg over it, put your elbow on your bent knee, and push against it so your back turns. Do both legs. Bring your legs in so that your ankles or feet are together. Bring them in as far as possible. Push your knees down with only your thigh muscles. DO NOT PUSH DOWN WITH YOUR HANDS/ARMS. Common mistake. Those will stretch the majority of muscles. You should also build up your upper and lower body muscles so your legs don't have to support your torso as well as run. So your torso can support itself, without the legs doing all the work: Lay on the ground. Put your hands out so your in a push up stance. Replace your hands with your forearms: [hide=example][/hide] Hold it for as long as possible. I can do it for 24 minutes, make that your goal, if you can go past that, go till 40. This is the best for stomach muscles, and back muscles. It's intense. :x And that's my warm-up before I go and start. It's also extremely important to have 6 routes, or courses picked out. Each one different, but similar to one other. So like you have two hill routes. Two normal go with the groove routes. Two fast pace+sprinting routes. Take the first set, and that's the first weeks routes. Take the other set and that's your second weeks routes. You take one day off each week to build muscles in your torso and legs. This will avoid the infamous plateau effect, if it's real. :wall: Replace your shoes every 4 months. New Balance is for the win, and only for the cool people who run. Nike sucks. Don't be fooled. Lol... Also build up your stride, so it's long. Walk like an idiot down to school, or whatever, do groin stretches whenever you can. When your able to do the splits either way, you've gotten to your peak stride, though if muscle is preventing you from doing the splits don't worry about it*. Food: Eat spaghetti like your life is going to end in the next 60 seconds if you don't eat it all. Well actually no, eat it every third day. But eat a lot when you do. Avoid pop with sugar, and caffeine. Avoid sugar. Avoid drugs & smoking. Pretty much it. Good luck. Also, I started running in grade 3, which was like...7 years ago? And it's much fun. Tom_Servo
I run quite a bit. I'm not going to get too detailed, but this is what I do nearly everyday. First I do a mile warm up, just a light, easy jog. Then I do a bunch of Plyometrics and stretch out GOOD. Stretching prevents injury and mussel fatigue and makes running a lot easier. My stretching routine usually takes around 15 minutes and includes 30 push-ups and 35 crunches. Crunches are important because they strengthen your abdominal region which is used a surprising amount while running. Then I run anywhere from 4-12 miles(hard, not lolly-gagging around and non stop) in the summer/fall during cross country season or various sets of intervals (example: 2x600's, 3x400's, 4x300's, and 5x200's.) to 7 miles in the winter/spring during track. After that 4x100, OR 4x150, OR 4x200 stride throughs/build ups OR 4 long, steep hills. Or a 2-5 mile cool down in the winter/spring after intervals. Then I stretch again, do 6 chin ups and 6 dips and I'm done. Oh and I ALWAYS run in the afternoon while the day is at it's hottest in the summer ( usually around 90-101 degrees out) and NEVER stop for water unless I'm about to pass out. This strengthens endurance and forces your body to use water more efficiently making you less susceptible to dehydration. But of course I drink plenty of water during the day. And if it's raining outside, you bet I'm out there running in it because it's just plain fun. During the winter it doesn't really matter when I run. It's either freakin' cold or it's not. ( gets anywhere from 10-45 degrees). I also enjoy running in the snow and sleet. Sometimes with no shirt on (don't get excited I AM a guy). Why? Because when I'm at a track meet I don't have the luxury of wearing my warm under-armor, hoody, gloves and hat and while my competitors are unprepared for just how cold it is, I'll be ready because I've done it all before. And if anyone wants to know, I run varsity (class 6A). Going to try and all-state (top 10 at state) this year in cross country. My average mile split for a 5k is around 5:10 And I usually play Runescape when I'm resting up because I find it relaxing. And just a tip: Never stop and walk when you go for a run. When you start running again, you will feel even worse than before. Push yourself and break through the pain. Oh... looks like I did get too detailed. Oh well. Oh and one last thing. Nike makes TERRIBLE running shoes but excellent [bleep]es. Go figure.
