I graduated high school almost a month ago. Right now, I'm enjoying my summer and looking for a job. I've enrolled at the local college where I'm going to get an Associate's Degree with an emphasis in Science. I'm going there absolutely free, and that will give me some time to find out which four year university I want to transfer to when I'm done with my two years here. :

I just got out about a month ago from my first (real) year of college. Doing a Graphic Communications degree that is a lot of fun.

 

 

 

Of course, all of my graphics classes (had a photoshop class first semester) I've already known everything. While I did learn a new program in a layout class for the most part it's pretty funny how much a person can self teach themselves.

 

 

 

 

 

But still it's a lot of fun.

 

 

 

Summer wise I'm doing my summer job now, which is helping with the web design for SAME (Society of American Military Engineers) which isn't bad. $10 an hour, 40 hours a week and I'm learning quite a bit as well -- pretty good deal.

 

 

 

 

 

Other than that I'm thinking of getting an apartment this next school year with my friend.

I'm pretty much exactly half way through my 3 year undergraduate course, majoring in biochemistry. I'll probably continue education after that with some postgrad course.

 

 

 

What course are you doing? It may be different for Sydney, I'm thinking about pursuing biochemistry, but I'm not sure of the course, what the course specifically involves etc etc.

 

 

 

I'm just doing a regular bachelor of science degree. I'm assuming other universities have a similar title for it.

 

 

 

In first year it was all broad, basic stuff, touching on life sciences (biology), physical sciences (chemistry and physics) and statistics. The back end of first year started to get a bit more specialised towards the major with organic chem, cell and molecular biology, etc. So far this year it's been more specific still; I've taken microbiology, a more specific cell and molecular biology unit, biochemistry proper and inorganic chemistry (the odd one out).

 

 

 

By definition, what biochemistry seems to focus on is the chemistry of life, i.e. cell metabolism and biosynthesis, the properties of biopolymers like DNA, proteins, carbohydrates and their reactions, the nature of biological catalysts (enzymes), the thermodynamics and kinetics of biological reactions, redox chemistry of the cell, a touch of acid-base chemistry, etc.

 

 

 

Molecular biology seems to be more focused on the molecular processes of the cell like the nature of DNA and its replication, the nature of a gene and it's expression via transcription into RNA and translation into protein (which really is the fundamental process of life along with DNA replication to my way of thinking). Other topics of interest are the function of proteins and other biopolymers, cell signaling, cell death and the cell cycle, etc. It generally focuses on any cellular process and the molecular reasons for such a process.

 

 

 

In general there dont seem to be any really well defined boundaries for what topics form part of biochemistry or molecular biology. Id say that this is vindicated by the fact that my uni didnt offer a major in molecular biology such topics have so far been covered under a biochemistry major.

 

 

 

So anyway, that's my experience with a biochemistry major in a bachelor of science degree.

 

 

 

If you're not sure what the course involves, your first step is to know what uni you're going to, get onto their website and search for what courses they offer and what they involve. They're all more than willing to give you course info because it means potential money for them.

Employment wise, I'm a retail manager, but I'm really fed up with the company I work for and need a change of scenery. My shares mature in April, so I'm waiting until that happens then I'm thinking about applying for the Police.

 

 

 

Relationship wise, I'm getting married at the end of July. My partner is really excited about it, but I'm just bewildered at the huge cost lol. In saying that, I can't wait for the honeymoon when we'll be off to Florida.

 

 

 

Freetime wise, I'm getting pretty bored with gaming. I need a new hobby. Just bought a guitar, so I might get into that. I've been playing a few other online games recently like Travian and Astro Empires to while away the hours. Think I'll wait until the Euro2008 championships are over, then I'll get stuck into a new hobby :)

Going to be a Jr in New York University.. double majoring in biochem and psychology with a math minor.. also pre-med. This summer.. doing researches.. one in Columbia Medical Center and one in NYU. Going to study abroad in London this Fall... and travel across Asia in the winter. Studying for MCAT and chillin with Bf on free time.

I'm doing my Irish equivalent to the GCSE's right now. This is how our school system works if you're interested:

 

 

 

Age 4-8 you're in junior school.

 

Age 8-12 you're in senior school.

 

Age 12-18 you attend secondary education, most schools call themselves "colleges" rather than schools.

 

Age 18 - "X" You attend university or don't and just get on with life.

 

 

 

For my LC (Irish equivalent to A levels) I need to average 90% in 6 tests so I can hopefully do Law in Ireland's top university. If I don't get that then I'll just get a Pilot's licence and fly for someone like Ryanair, they've a pretty cool Pilot's scheme. If all else fails I'm joining the British army and enrolling into the Paratroopers regiment and then hopefully some day be accepted into the SAS.

 

 

 

After my GCSE's are over I'm spending my summer getting wasted, working, playing golf and avoiding the law most likely, then again I'm on half name terms with half of my local police force -.-

I write my 3rd (Chemistry 12 adv) of 4 exams tomorrow (I wrote 3 last semester), and then I graduate on June 26th. Exams here are designed to be 2 hours in length, and we're given up to 2.5 hours to write them.

 

 

 

In September I'm going to Dalhousie University, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, about an hour from where I live. I'm taking BSc and I'm not sure yet what I'll major in. Likely Chemistry or something Biology-related. I have interests in going into Med school when I'm done my undergrad degree but I'm not sure yet, we'll see. :P

Completed 7th form in December, just taking a year off to decide what i'm good at and where I would best be suited to go to for my career in something on the arts.

Lesee. Past, I just finished Grade 9, Semester 2 exams (For anyone wanting an equivalent, I was born in '93=15 years old), and damn did that English exam require a lot of writing, or atelast more than I'm used to for a test/exam (3 pages double-sided).

 

 

 

Near-future, I'm gearing into summer mode, AKA nothing but slowly turning nocturnal until my parents get mad at me, at which point the cycle restarts, playing rugby for a league, hopefully working for my dad's friend (Manual labour ftw, by the way), getting in the 40 hours of community service I need to graduate in Grade 12. If I have too much spare time on my hands, I think I'll just do some more volunteering to fill the gaps, could never hurt my job applications :

 

 

 

Sometime after the summer I'd like to convince my parents to let me buy myself a computer (Not laptop, I hate the keyboards on these things, and how hippocritical of me, I am on laptop right now). I'm still considering whether having a computer would be worth my investment, because I've found that even our families crappy computer is fine by me, and there are 2 computers + 1 laptop available for me to use, with the crappy computer often unoccupied for clear reasons.

 

 

 

Post-summer, it's back to school, and I already know what courses I will have, who my teacher will be for two of them, and generally how my year will go. I'm not sure if this is good or bad; at times I am forced to take certain courses because I am in a preperation programme for the International Baccalaureate. I'm fine with it for now, because it isn't until Grade 11 & 12 where my choices really open up. I do not plan on continuing on to the IB, although now that I think about it, I wouldn't be all that against it. What will really change my mind is whether the IB diploma is actually recognized by universities as a higher-level diploma, and that continuing with the programme will actually prove to be a benefit instead of just me trying to find a challenge (I slept through math and got a 93 for crying out loud, I easily could have brought it up to 97/98 if I bothered with it, and keep in mind that this programme is meant to be challenging, though I disagree). The only thing that is keeping me in for Grade 10 is that the classes move at a much faster pace than regular academic courses, so I know that if I drop it, I will be even more bored.

 

 

 

Incase you're wondering, my courses will be:

 

Civics/Careers (Mandatory for an Ontario Diploma)

 

Grade 10 Math (IB level, so it will contain units from higher grades)

 

Grade 10 Science

 

Grade 10 French

 

Economics

 

Grade 11 Math (Yes, Math both semesters)

 

Grade 10 English

 

Grade 10 Canadian History

 

 

 

I am tempted to call this an easy year, but I don't know what English and History will be like. By the way, I was given no choice, other than a vote involving the two classes between, I think it was Higher Level, Economics and History. We did have an elective this year, but Economics was bumped up so that would could have a free period/elective in Grade 12.

 

 

 

Distant-future, I'm hoping to get into the University of Waterloo, for pretty much any engineering course. Obviously I want to become an engineer, and the specific field I am not all too picky about, although electrical/chemical would be nice.

 

 

 

Other than this, I'm basically going to live life by the moment, just trying to enjoy myself as much as possible. What good is life if you don't live it up?

Well, I have one more exam on Monday and then I am done. I will be having fun until August when I get my results and apply to 6th form. Hopefully, go to 6th form and study, Health and Social Care, English Lit, and ICT. I'm looking forward to my education now. It should be fun, hopefully.
