Money? How? Why?

Get a job. Use your parents to try and get you one, work with a mate of a mate. Gather up all your contacts and try and get a job from there. Personally I wouldn't be relying(sp?) on mowing lawns to get money. Maybe you will get 1 or 2 lawns from people you know, but word probably won't get around and you will probably be back to where you started.

And maybe try and get a job that doesn't have heaps of staff and you hardly get any shifts. I work at a hardware store (15 year old) and during the holidays I'm earning $350 a week because I work the 8 hours a day.

pizzaman, now that Goddess has explained her side to me i think you should lower your expectations, don't get me wrong i know it SUCKS to be 14 so close to be able to get a job but you cant but maybe you can eliminate the Iphone and get a cheaper cell phone, get Rock Band for the 360, because the 360 version is cheaper than the Wii version, and maybe get the hunting knife first

at best you're going to hit $100 thats all i could get in a month with birthday money

so here what i think you should do:

buy the hunting knife, see if you can sell the boar skin/meat for money, buy Rock Band for the 360, then wait until you're old enough to get a job for the Iphone

Wait - you want a hunting knife as a backup weapon while boar hunting?!

Either the boar in your area are really small, or the hunting knives are really freaking huge.

Damn, boy, there are reasons why hunters in the middle ages used groups of men with spears to hunt boar.

Maybe he's going to throw the knife.. [/troll]

Still I disagree somewhat that being allowed to hunt boar at 14 (with your parents, at least) doesn't really make a kid spoiled or troublesome. At least in northern european countries I know for a fact hunting is a normal outdoor activity for anyone upwards of 14 years old, and 15 year olds can get hunting rifle permits if supervised by an adult.

And if you don't like hard work for getting $400, you can always let Mrs. Fortuna help you. Take the Euro2008 or major league baseball games for example.

1. Register under false age to a bookie

2. Bet 1 buck on guessing the correct outcome of 15 matches

3. ???

4. $400

Really, if you aren't willing to take risks (which you probably don't know enough about, yet), your only alternative especially at that age, is doing minor jobs like mowing lawns.

The wanting of unimportant items after the word "no" including a weapon already indicate to me that he's a brat. The latest phone as an example, he already has a phone that makes calls, sends messages and is fully paid for. The latest game for wii as another example, big deal play your other games and be thankful you even got a game console. You can't honestly tell me his parents have said "Okay little Johnny, if you can afford the pocket knife yourself, you can have it." "Brat" in another context meaning "A troublesome child" please, what is something productive a 14 year old would need a pocket knife for?

you must've been sheltered growing up? and also, boar hunting playing with knives is not troublesome, nor does it make me a brat. how do you think people survived for millions of years? hunting, and working our way to the top of the food chain. i know its an over-simplification, but its true. and knives are only a weapon if used as such. i use knives as a tool. and my parents never said no, they don't care as long as i don't seriously hurt myself. and they know that i know what i am doing when i toy with knives. think before you post.

EDIT:also, if i take your same narrow-mindedness, and use for something else: 'cookies are bad! they do nothing but make people fat!'

EDIT#2: i gotta go to bed now as i'm tired and i have to do some wood work and painting tomorrow.

Ever heard of a gun, as everyone else said get a job. As IGodessI said real good parenting there.

Your name is "bet you fail", and you're starting a business with your mom? I'm not even going to touch that.....

Got any skills? Web programming for example? I also know someone who paints models and sells them on ebay. Think outside the box.

Otherwise wash cars, lawn mowing, yard work, babysitting, deliver newspapers - although more difficult if you don't live in a neighbourhood. Have you asked your parents if they have any suggestions to make some money? They might know someone who wants help with something even if they don't want it themselves.

For it is the greyness of dusk that reigns.

If one of your parents owns a bussiness, just ask them if you could work there. My dad hired me, I get like $12 an hour and I do nothing and I get a $20 a week for allowance, so try saving up on allowance.

P.S. I'm 14

P.S.S. If I was a parent and you were my child, I wouldn't tolerate you owning a knife nor allowing you to purchase it, but since your not my son, I really don't care.

Sell your body to older women.

well if you live in the US you can't get an actual job until your 16. and since the things your trying to buy are not NEEDS but rather WANTS, you don't need to set a time budget for yourself. You have all the time in the world. So have a yard sale, sell your junk, go mowing lawns or shoveling yards in winter, the usual young entreprenuer stuff. Slow but steady profit each week is better than wasting those weeks thinking of a get rich quick scheme.

tip it would pay me $500.00 to keep my clothes ON :(
But then again, you fail to realize that 101% of the people in this universe hate you. Yes, humankind's hatred against you goes beyond mathematical possibilities.
That tears it. I'm starting an animal rebellion using my mind powers. Those PETA bastards will never see it coming until the porcupines are half way up their asses.

I'm 14 and I managed to get a half-job working at an office. It's all grunt work though; delivering mail, photocopying, scanning, or going through an automated phone-service to get something replaced. I'll probably make around $500, half of which is going in the bank, the other half is buying me some sweet new headphones

I don't think it's that hard to make money during the summer. My best friend is working for 6 weeks at a marina docking boats for $8 an hour, some of my other friends are cutting lawns or babysitting, others manage to get jobs at small golf courses carrying boxes around.

I am just going to join the list of people telling you that you don't need that stuff. Especially the iPhone since you are so young you don't actually need half those features (and you do have to subscribe to a certain plan I believe to make it work, I believe 200 bucks for an Iphone is also standard price at at&t).

Just get a joooob.

He might not need that stuff, but come on...He wants it. And you've wanted things too...Admit it. Not to mention that he's willing to work for it, I wouldn't say that's spoiled.

The iPhone and Rock Band are things that I understand, I don't care about cell phones at all (I have a cheap $15 dollar one), but yea, I'll agree, I've wanted things like that. However, the hunting knife...A bit overkill? Unless you plan on selling the things you hunt, I would say wait on it, unless you want it more than an iPhone or Rock Band.

Lower your expectations first, you're not getting $400 in a month. Maybe two or three months, maybe a year, but definitely not one.

As for the people telling him to get a job, he's already said that he CAN'T. Not that he doesn't want to. If these things are things he really wants, I would believe that he would be willing to work for them - I would. However, if you mean "Wait until you're older, then got a job", I'll agree. If you can't get a job, not even small tasks, you're probably not going to make much money at 14.

I guess you could help out with random tasks, and perhaps make some money off that. If I understand correctly, you're 14 and live basically in the middle of nowhere. If the latter is false, and it's just that you live kind of off to the side of a town/city, you can attempt to become an assistant. To what, I don't know. But I'm pretty sure you can become one at 14, and make some money off it. If you truly can't get an official job (Which I believe is true, if you have the same laws as here), you'll need a bit of luck and patience. All I can say is good luck, and if you truly want those things, be determined and don't give up.

You guys seriously need to lay off. You never wanted something new and shiny when you were younger? I can remember if there was anything that was new and looked cool, I wanted it. He's a kid, give him a break.

If you want those things, you do what it takes to get the money, and if that means waiting until you have a job that will support what you want to spend, then you have to do that too.

as many people have said: "you dont need money, you want money. you dont need that stuff, you want that stuff." minor jobs are always available somewhere, you just need to look for the jobs instead of waiting for someone to offer you the job.

P.S.: im 14 too and i think spending $400 on an iphone, a knife and a game is a total waste of money; you will eventually notice that you dont need any of that stuff.

Why even try with that idiot? Honestly, there is no point whatsoever. I'd get better replies if I argued with a tree stump.

Would someone mind informing me of why it is an honest necessity for everyone to have a cell phone? I've never had and most likely never will have a cell, and never missed it. Honestly, isn't it just extra money you're spending? Why do you find a cell phone to be even worth paying for?

(Note that this is a general question, and is neither directed specifically at Goddess, NH or the OP.)

Considering no one else has answered I figured I would.

The thing is is that, for me, as a college student it is just much easier having to deal with a cell phone (and my entire family is on one plan so it's cheap) than worrying about a home phone. Hell, my cell is my home phone as far as it is concerned.

Also, they become a necessary when you get into an accident and need to call someone (but no phone is around) or any sort of other emergency. Other than that they're pretty damn helpful by just being able to call anyone without having to be inside your house or using a payphone.

However there is no Need for an iPhone, honestly. It's just a cool gadget and certainly not something I would imagine a 14 year old running around with.

after reading all the posts, i have somthin to say...

i want these things, not need. but i've been wanting them for while now. and BTW iPones are not new, they came out a year ago. and they are going to be $199 from apple and i might buy a refurb one. and the hunting knife isn't that big of a deal. with knives that look cool, i usually hang on my wall. and also, i'm not hunting with it - its my sort of defense if a boar attacks. i will be hunting with 30-30 rifle. and $30 for nice knife is a great price. and the only job i might be able to get is working either in a field on a tractor or in a car repair shop, both would be my dad's friend employing me. and i usually work for my money - the laptop i'm usin now ($525 refurbished from dell) is one that i saved up from x-mas and from working for my dad and paid for, but my dad has no more work for me.

Do work for your parents? I used to do that 'till I was 15. Wash cars, paint, wash windows, etc. My mom would give me like $20 for washing the van, when my dad gave me like $3. Which is why I never asked to wash my dads car. But in all honestly, who got me ready for the real world?

I'd like to apologize to you pizza dude after reading that line - No hard feelings

And while I still don't agree with a 14 year old with a hunting knife I've read BlueLancer's post. He made me think about how acceptable it is in other parts of the world which I wasn't thinking about at the time.

I have a gut feeling you should have a heart to heart with your 18 year old brother about some jobs. Good luck :)

Im gonna suggest a great alternative to all these honest jobs people are talking about.

You should.... deal drugs.

Seriously, its quick, easy, profitable, and you have the perfect excuse to watch shows like the Fresh Prince of Belair without being called a whiteboy.

Hey.

The best advice I could give to someone your age would be to save your money from birthdays or something. But, if that's not an option, there's not much else I can tell you. Just wait until you turn 15 and get a job at a grocery store or someplace like that.

Okay, that's cool. But why does ANYONE need anything more than, like, a really crappy one? Is it just an 'I want to look cool' or 'I want to have cool games and ringtones and stuff' thing? Or is there a reason for anyone to actually own an iPhone, other than a piece of curio?

Just wondering.. Why wouldn't you allow your child to own a knife? I was around 13 when I became really interested in knives/swords/other weapons and my parents were cool with it. Hell, my dad bought me my first knife and when we find a place that sells knives dirt cheap I can usually talk him into buying me a few and he ends up getting himself one.

I guess it's somewhat similar to computers. Why would anyone need a Vista, what's wrong with Windows 98?

Though computers are much more important than phones. However, I've heard that iPhones are going to start becoming a handheld video game system soon... :-s

I guess the more expensive (And "better") phones are more stable, they work better, have a few more features, and look cooler. But they're not needed, I agree.

And Goddess, I had to laugh. "Pizza dude"...
