obfuscator
Was he going for a paid position? Yes, I believe most volunteer positions at rural stations in Ontario are paid. Regardless Ontario is its own little crap fest when it comes to this stuff from my knowledge, such as the unregulated training which almost caused a lawsuit earlier in the year when a guy died in the academy. NFPA does sit as a minimum standard, so in a place like Ontario where I'm imagining lots of applicants they may have set the standard higher because they can. Interesting. I got the feeling that in the GTA and around (within 100km) things are fairly competitive even for the volunteer positions. obfuscator
Not sure if sarcasm or not due to the whole internet thing but if it is that is actually a thing. Nope, actually serious. Obviously it's not as much as being full time, but it's still a thing. Due to demand primarily. I know if any urban stations take volunteers, and if they do, I doubt it's paid. Found the vision reqs: http://www.ofai.ca/candidate-information/medical-requirements-become-firefighter-ontario Yeah, I live in an area where due to demographics being relatively fit, showing interest, and having a beating heart can basically qualify you with the average firefighter (volunteer or otherwise) in the county is probably over 35. Yeah, over in NS. Sucks about the vision requirement thing though could always move out to these parts :P. obfuscator
Yeah. Honestly at this point in my life it doesn't make sense (i'm still in an urban area). If I ever move someplace more rural it may be worth getting the surgery, but that's probably a few years away at least. RpgGamer
Anybody here watching Fox's Gotham Season 2? The kid they got playing the homage to Heath Ledger's joker is actually doing a much better job than I thought he would previously. Quote Quote Anyone who likes tacos is incapable of logic. Major Dash
I got bit by one of those once. I got a relatively dry bite, but the bit burned intensely for about 2 days and I had a small patch of rotting flesh on my back. I can still feel where the scar tissue is on my back. “I had a feeling we weren’t coming back from this fight when it began.”“Do you have any regrets?”“I don’t. It seems surprising, I know, but I wouldn’t change a thing. This is how it was meant to be.”“Huh, you never really notice how lovely the day is until you realize you’ll never see it again.”“Mmmhmm.”
muggiwhplar
Been frustrated w/ my plateauing bench press strength lately so I bit the bullet and decided to buy a bench press for my home so I can bench every day lol Anyways, for those of you who didn't know, on certain companies' websites, you can add stuff to your shopping cart, go all the way through the checkout (give them your email, billing and payment info), but then when it comes time to actually place the order, you just close the window and act like you decided not to buy anything at the last second. Within about 24 hours you'll get an email from them (since they have your email now), offering you a discount. In my case, the bench I was looking at was $250 + $150 shipping. Didn't wanna pay for shipping so I figured I'd just wait till I got the discount and then pay for it online and pick it up at the store. Ended up getting a 10% discount after about 24 hours, and then another $50 discount the following day. So I ended up paying about $190, including tax... saved myself about $70 :D

I haven't actually tried doing that in a while. What's your bench at now? I was benching about 215 lbs @ ~135 lbs about 2 months ago. But then I had a minor injury from squatting so I took a week off. Then my car had problems so that was another week I couldn't lift. For the past two weeks I've been stuck at 205, which is pretty frustrating. I'm buying the bench so I can train it the same way I did with my one arm pullup a couple years ago-- just benching as often as possible while I'm home every single day without burning out. So hopefully I'll gain strength much more rapidly this way... otherwise I'll probably just commit honorable seppuku :P My only other concern is that my posture will get messed up as a result of having such a disproportionately strong bench compared to my other lifts >_>

Kalphite
Been frustrated w/ my plateauing bench press strength lately so I bit the bullet and decided to buy a bench press for my home so I can bench every day lol This is a horrible idea. You won't have any time to recover between days and you'll just injure yourself. You gain strength while you're actually resting between days and your body builds back the muscle fibers that are broken when you lift heavy. It's natural for your bench press to slow down when you hit that high of a weight. 5x5 doesn't work forever because eventually it just gets too stressful for your body, and that's why split body part routines exist for when you get to that point, as they are designed so that you can keep progressing once you get to the point where full-body routines are too much stress for your body.Look into PHAT or PHUL or 5/3/1 or some similar strength or hybrid strength/hypertrophy program if you want to progress in a sustainable manner without hurting yourself. You could also lose strength from benching too often without adequate recovery time. Last year I had two roommates with 225+ benches and one with a 360 lb bench and none of them benched more than once a week. strength training is about long term progress, not about rushing t meet your goals as fast as possible. finally started getting back to the gym after having to take a month off due to school craziness and holy shit I always forget how bad squats are when you first start doing them again. Somehow managed to not drop any weight from my bench, and I only lost 20 pounds off of my squat for 3x5 which is acceptable for how much time I lost. Now it's time to go again and deadlift for the first time in a month. eek.
muggiwhplar
I'm not doing 5x5 though. I bought the bench specifically so I can do grease the groove like I did for my chinups a couple years ago. Only took about 1.5 months to be able to do a 1-arm chinup (start; finish) following that program.
