What affects a person's first 99 choice?

You see people walk around in untrimmed skill capes and wonder why they chose that skill to get 99 in first.

I believe there are 5 things that affect a persons choice in what skill they get lvl 99 in first.

Money- Witch skill will help them earn alot of money while they train or after they reach a certain lvl the money comes in. Ex: Runecrafting, fishing, woodcutting, hunter, fletching

Time- How fast a skill is trainable. Many people tend to train fast skills first because they want thier first 99 fast. But some people like the journey better and get slower skills first. Ex: Fast- Fletching, cooking

Power- Also people train skills that help make them strong and able to kill high lvl creatures or other players easier. This is also kinda motivated by money because most of those creatures drop expensive stuff. Such as the God swords and bandos armor. Some people however do this just for the satisfaction of seeing a green number by other people's name.

Rarity- Some people train skills that very little people have 99 in such as runecrafting, agility, farming, or summoning. They do this for the satisfaction of getting one of the hardest skills to 99 and the ability to say they have 99 in it

Real life- This is the BIG DEBATER. Some people train skills because of things they like in real life. I have a friend who hunts in real life and he spent all his time training hunter after it came out. Another firend does wood working in his garage and he has 99 crafting. I got 99 thieving first because I learned how to pick locks after forgeting my key to my house 1 to many times so just in case and nothing is as satisfying as a locked door opening for you ::' .

Other reasons people have brought up:

Just Liking the skill

There's also the factor of how much the person likes the skill... I got Agility first because I really like Agility :P

Competition

I am f2p. My first 99 was mining.

I never really set out to get it first but I think it was the competitive element that really got me. I hated losing out to other better skilled miners so trained harder.

The looks of the skill cape (wow I wonder how I did not think of this one :wall: )

The first two reasons pretty much explain why I got my 99's. I got Woodcutting and Hunter so I could make some cash. Fletching and Cooking were because I calculated how long it would take me and I realized it was a considerably short amount of time - so I decided to go for them.

In my opinion, when it comes to power, 90 is already a really nice level. It's only 9 down from 99 but over half the Xp away though. So that's why I pretty much stopped at 90ish for now when it comes to my combat skills. Rarity doesn't bother me. I guess my Hunter Cape is kind of rare but I mainly got it for the money and just for the sake of having a goal.

It also helps that rune moning is a nice little earner in f2p. Another factor was that it gave me good reason to train combat, particularly def. (No pkers were going to beat me too easily - Though they did get me a couple of times!!)

I didn't even think of that. Probably because the only skill I don't actually like training is Herblore. \'

I'm headed to 99 ranged as it is. I started to train to 70 to just get the hide but realized how much money i was making so i continued. I got up into the 80's and just loved training it. Ever since void there's not a more satisfying feeling in the world than taking down a higher lvl meleer with the low def void set a c bow =]] Besides that i knew it wasn't the slowest either, i knew i could chin but i hate to do it. It's expensive and i really don't see the exp flying in.

I'll just go through and touch on how much each of the said reasons influenced my decision to get Firemaking as my first 99.

1st: Money- Not a big factor for me, I had around 10M at the time, so there were definitely other choices.

2nd: Time- One of the biggest factors. I know I didn't want to spend ages on a 99, seeing as I had many RL commitments.

3rd: Power- Um, not a bit. I knew FM wasn't a "amazing" 99.

4th: Rarity- Again, I didn't really care.

5th: Real life- I light fires about twice a year. Definitely no RL factor.

6th: Just Liking the skill- This was the #1 factor for me. I had always liked FM and that greatly influenced my decision to get 99.

7th: Competition- Not a bit.

Reading this topic got me thinking, on what my first 99 would be based on, if i ever aimed seriously to get one.

I think for me rarity would be the biggest factor.

Getting something not many other people have is one of the only things you can do to make your self stand out in such a huge game like RS.

Hence the reason people put so much time/effort into untrimmed slayer capes.

And also the reason accounts have already been made, aiming for untrimmed summoning.

Just the looks of the cape and how relaxing it is to take the time and train one of your favorite skills, for me, Sitting at the fishing colony burning logs while the fishers catch monkfish always makes me relaxed ::'

Well, I can't speak for other people, but I can speak for myself.

99 was my first skill. There are a few reasons.

The main reason is that by far, it's my favorite skill. I love getting hit 0s while fighting dangerous monsters. It comes in handy every single day that I play this game, unlike other skills.

It was easy to train, I mean, you just swing the weapon for long enough and it will happen.

I still to this day wear my defense cape even though I have 5 other skillcapes, just because it was my first and favorite.

The looks, respect, emote and all those other things don't really effect me at all.

Man, I really do love Runescape, and I'm sure if it was a real person I would of asked it to marry me by now.

Lol, you didn't tell us what 99 you got first until your 5th sentence :geek:

For me, both rarity and fun count. Money is not really a problem. I currently want 99 farming, but I don't have the money. So I'm trying to make some

Fun, money, and pwnage. The three skills I could do are farming ranged and either defense or thieving although I am very far away from that.

Thoroughly retired, may still write now and again

Thanks Kahpias for the err template?

1st: Money- Haha, Construction can make money? Don't think so!

2nd: Time- Exact opposite for me, Construction takes a long time and determination.

3rd: Power- Well, power as in combat power isn't what Construction is about. I just love the fact you can build something that you can call your own.

4th: Rarity- This might've made me love the skill more. I just love being ranked in the top 8k.

5th: Real life- My parents are big on housing, but I never actually could build anything.

6th: Just Liking the skill- Owange factor. I loved Construction from the start. Got 39 Construction at 49 CB.

7th: Competition- Nope, non of my friends are going for the 99.

I'm not sure if anyone has said this, But some people go for 99's just to achieve something. Some people aren't that good at sport, and maybe never have won an Academic certificate or trophy. If you ask anyone how they felt when they got the 99, most would say They felt amazing, because they achieved something. I Also heard a one off case from my friend that he got 99 with his friend, just because his friend wanted to quit, unless he got a 99 with someone else. Some people are easily bored, too. I Don't know how you can sit there doing the same thing over and over and call it a relief from boredom though.

Some people like the skill, some just want to think they can call people noob because they don't have a skill cape. I personally like attack and really like to have it 99 by christmas(with school starting that won't happen. Will try to work as much in f2p though).

The big thing with me is how much i enjoy the skill, and how it can help me.

Right now I'm going for 99 fishing, I highly enjoy it and it's very usefull too. With the higher level fishing comes the ability to get the higher level fish more quickly. Which can also help with money.

Small amount of gold for Barbed Tailed Harpoon < Close to 1k for shark.

I forgot when I got 99 cooking!

Hmm, that's a good question. I'm currently going for 99 def for a few reasons:

1.Functionality, defense (and HP) are the only stats that are universally useful in all three areas of the combat triangle.

2.Appearance

3.Rarity, not so much in P2P, but in F2P, in places like FOG or Clan Wars (Places where high level players are more common) you'll mostly see str, fletching, and atk capes.

100% F2P
