I voted Saturday for McCain who I consider to be the lesser of two evils. I've never felt so much tension in a voting line. It was very quiet.

Voting doesn't start for another week -.-. Unless it was a mock election.

There is an early voting process actually, it depends on the state involved. Maybe next time it would be clever to know what you're talking about.

McCain Adviser: "Our Health Proposal Sucks"

http://money.cnn.com/2008/10/28/news/ec ... 2008102807

Under McCain's plan, employees would get taxed on the value of their health insurance, which on average costs $12,680 per year for a family, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. Workers pay an average of $3,354 in premiums, while their employers cover the rest.

Most employees have their premiums deducted from their paychecks without paying tax on them. So, if you make $50,000, you are likely paying tax on only $46,646 of income.

Under McCain, your taxable income would rise to $59,326. If you were in the 25% tax bracket, it would mean an additional $3,170 in taxes.

But this increase would be knocked back by the $5,000 tax credit. So in the end, you'd actually have $1,830 to put in a health savings account, which could be used to cover premiums and other medical expenses.

Experts, however, fear that eliminating the tax advantage of employer-based coverage would prompt younger, healthier workers to leave their office plans. If that happened, costs for the remaining workers could skyrocket. Companies may drop coverage altogether.

"If companies know their employees have the tax credit, it relieves them of the burden of providing coverage," said Sara Collins, who directs a health insurance program at the Commonwealth Fund. McCain's plan "moves people out of the employer system and to the individual market."

Some 74% of companies said that eliminating the tax exclusion would have a "strong negative impact on their workforce," according to a September survey by the American Benefits Council.

Estimates vary, but the Tax Policy Center estimates that 20 million people would lose their employer-based coverage by 2018. Roughly the same number would gain insurance through other means. But, overall, McCain's plan would do little to reduce the number of uninsured.

Also of concern, experts say, is the fact that the $5,000 tax credit would be indexed to inflation. As a result, it would not keep up with the swiftly rising cost of health care, which was soaring as much as 13% a year in the middle of this decade.

McCain advisers counter these concerns. Changing the tax treatment wouldn't hurt the employer-sponsored system and would allow more of the uninsured to buy their own coverage, they say. Also, his advisers say a McCain administration would keep an eye on the credit to make sure it didn't lag behind the cost of coverage, while also working to lower the rate of medical inflation.

Younger, healthier workers likely wouldn't abandon their company-sponsored plans, said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, McCain's senior economic policy adviser.

"Why would they leave?" said Holtz-Eakin. "What they are getting from their employer is way better than what they could get with the credit."

Criticizing earmarks doesn't mean they are anti-science and if you want to talk churches, compare Obama's hate filled Marxist church to Palin's.

Only 3 terrorists were waterboarded and only 30 prisoners of CIA ever saw any kind of coercive interrogation. And the UN has different definitions of torture which I don't think include stress positions or temperatures. Those would be under a different category. And frankly I don't care. I think that if anybody has information that could save lives they should do whatever it takes to get the information short of harming the guys family.

And go to House.Gov and look up the bill. It is in the text dude. It's House Resolution 1424. Why would I make that up? It was the democrats who put it in.

ok your worse then a wall. a wall doesn't talk back.

arn't you getting it they !!!!!!!!can't!!!!!! pay back any money that they are given because all that money is going to paying off debts and is not actually being invested in making more.

and these are under the un's definition of torture. google it!!! look at how several un human rights overseers are being kicked out of gitmo because of it.

torture doesn't work!!!!

tortureres won't stop if you say you know nothing a million times!!!! they are after information that they believe correct even though there is no evidence to support it. people answer torturers because they think its what they want and will end there pain not because its the truth. if i were to waterboard you a million times to get you to say your mom is an alien you'll say it not because its the truth but because it will end the pain.

i'm not going to post on this thread anymore because you just are not listening to reason and humanity and is just turning into a flame fest

Dude, don't take my world for it. Look it up. House Resolution 1424 the "Economic Stabilization Act of 2008". It is in the bill that all money will be gained back by the taxpayers from the financial institutions after 5 years.. And torture works. I would trust someone who has worked at CIA for years and knows their job over some dunce from Amnesty International.

The fact that you honestly said "Torture works" sickens me. How can you be pro-life and have Christian morals and not see anything wrong with torture? Even if it works, doesn't it still go against your morals?

I see what is wrong with torture. I never said it was a good thing. But when lives can be saved by giving a mass murderer a dunk in the water for less than a minute I won't lose much sleep.

Socialist Candidate clears up the differences between socialism, and Obama...or at least he tries to.

Socialism is a system in which the people democratically control the means of production for the good of the whole society....rather than a few corporate heads. It by no means implies, "Spreading the wealth".

Obama's 30 minute address to the nation tonight, airing on 7 channels for my local cable. I told my history class about this just over a week ago and nobody had heard about it yet (I felt smart, haha). I didn't hear a word about it today to be honest except for on CNN this morning. Wonder what reactions this will get.

The above quiz, sponsored by Minnesota Public Radio, is probably one of many online right now. If you're interested, take a few minutes to check out which presidential candidate you're aligned with :P This is an assignment for my history class. During primary season, the class apparently took a similar quiz and had some surprising results.

"spreading the wealth" would be more along the lines of 'from each according to his ability, to each according to his need'. And I'd be willing to bet that Obama would be perfectly happy to go along with Maxine Waters when she said "this liberal wants to socialize oil companies"

Anything that affects oil companies, particularly Exxon, in major ways, I have to look into. My brother-in-law is probably getting an engineering job there, and he's worked in oil fields his whole life. Thus, if [cabbage] goes down there, him and my sister are in trouble. I do not like that.

Exxon currently has all 10 of the top 10 corporate quarterly earnings of all time, so I don't think they're going to be in any drastic trouble where they need to lay people off. The only way they'll need to start streamlining is if they want to.

do i need to get the cards out again??

what part don't you get??

your government can pass all the bills it wants to. they can't make money out of thin air!!!!!!!

all the money that is going to pay the banks is going to pay debts and keep their stocks up!!!!!!! they are still loseing money no matter how much the government gives them. they only way to actually fix the problem would be to give the money to american citizens who owe money on mortages, credit, ect.

if they do this

#1 forclosures are going to go down and every american citizen will still have a home instead of being forced out on the street

#2 people will actually be able to buy food, clothing, and everything else that we humans deem essential

#3 it will stop the banks from crashing!!!! the banks will no longer have to try and collect money from people who don't have a penny to spare and all there debts will slowly go away and the banks will not be loseing money on failed mortages and loans.

if they don't do the banks are going to lose more money and your government will slowly crumble, just like your infrastructure, healthcare, education, and nuemerouse other systems that are decaying because your government cant afford to keep them running. don't believe me look at new orliens(srry if i misspelled). people were telling the bush administration for years that the levees would not hold.

pick up an actual book for once and not what your government keeps feeding you.

and i'm discusted that you actually think torture is ok.

more often then not its inocent people who are forced to confess to things that they did not do. and again i'm disgusted by people like you who actually think that this is ok

Me behave? Seriously? As a child I saw Tarzan almost naked, Cinderella arrived home from a party after midnight, Pinocchio told lies, Aladin was a thief, Batman drove over 200 miles an hour, Snow White lived in a house with seven men, Popeye smoked a pipe and had tattoos, Pac man ran around to digital music while eating pills that enhanced his performance, and Shaggy and Scooby were mystery solving hippies who always had the munchies. The fault is not mine! if you had this childhood and loved it put this in your signature!

If any industry should be nationalized, it should be the Energy Industry, which includes the oil companies. At least, that's what I would like to see happen, lol. Health care as well, but that's just common sense

This is probably my fault because I am not being clear. Your first comment was that the government was going to raise taxes on people in order to pay for the bailout. What I said was that the government would have all of the money returned to them. The aren't just giving it away for free dude. It is written into the bill that if after 5 years they haven't made back all of the money then they will recover it from the financial institutions. Taxpayers are on the hook for nothing.

Anyone catch Obamarama last night? The production values were incredible. It did exactly what it was intended to do.

Mccain has no chance simply because his campaign staff is a group of total incompetents. If I were running his campaign this race would be tighter than Jared's pants pre-Subway.

"Sir! Sir! Lets go negative! That always works!"

His staff ran his campaign just like Bush's campaign was run, which is exactly NOT where Mccain's strengths lie.

Polling results after the infomercial will be very interesting.

Obama might start moving into Arizona, because he's within stealing distance there. It certainly would be embarrassing for John to lose his home state that he was leading in by 12-15 points at one point. Obama is within like 4 points, and now McCain has to send ads there to defend it on a limited budget.

Obama winning, Ted Stevens is a felon, the Democrats might get a 61-39 majority, Sarah Palin thinks she's going to be the 2012 nominee, and the Republican Party is dismantling and imploding. This is the greatest election ever.

Although I respect the republican history, I can not agree more here: what the republicans stand for and stood for the last decades is sometimes no less than disgusting. It seems they have brought this very much upon themselves and I would be thrilled to see them losing their choking grip, finally, on the USA. Let's hope it can last for more than a couple of years and that they return to what they used to stand for.

If they were still the party of Lincoln and Roosevelt as they so like to claim on their stumps, I would vote for them. Teddy R. is one of the best presidents of all time, and he could possibly be my favorite one.

If this were 1904, I'd have some serious contemplating to do to make a choice between Teddy R. and Eugene Debs.

Lol, magekillr, just because the Rep's probably won't win this election doesn't mean they are finished. It will probably actually be better if they lose this one just to let things cool down. And also there is still around 55 million registered republicans in the US, they won't just die out.
