My Birthday...

Ok, well. My birthday was actually July 11th, but we could not celebrate anything that day because one of my family member's funeral was the next day. Ok, whatever. I get a party later, fine. I can deal with that.

Today, I learn that my 'surprise birthday party' was happening today. I feel happy, especially since my Uncle who I barely see was coming. Driving to the airport, nothing really happens. We were looking for his plane, though it was coming in a half hour later.

We drive in on the airport, still looking up for airplanes, and nothing. Wasn't a really busy day; I think there was like 100 people in the terminal, thouhg it is alot cinsidering where I live. We finally see my uncle's plane touch down at 17:15 CST. We meet him a couple minues later, and grab his baggage, and walk out the door.

We walk to our car, in a parking spot just in the front by the door; another sign that it wasn't busy. Everything's fine, discussing random things on the way home... Until "DEBBIE! WATCH OUT!" *CRASH*

This old man, probably in the 70's parked on the side of the road, on the right (Considering this is Canada in future references). We come up at the left lane on our city's second biggest throughfare. The old [bleep] suddenly starts driving away, and it looks like he was turning into the right lane.

No, he wasn't, he was coming straight at us! My mom tried to swerve, and it probably saved my uncle's leg. He hit us on our right back wheel, popping it (And I was sitting right beside it). She quickly turned, correcting our sideways momentum, and driving us straight into the curb where the van rest.

Our van is now totalled, we lost our only was of travel around the city, and I watched the whole thing in slow motion. I saw the entire thing from the right back seat, from when he sped up and turned to the hit, to everything flying. I was lucky I shielded my face when the glass broke on my side.

No one was injured, we were just shooken up. my 3 year old brother who sat beside me had a panic attack, but he was fine a little later on. This crash made headlines, and slowed traffic on the Lewvan to a snails pace while the emergeny crews worked their way through to us.

And, you know what. This old [bleep] was going back to the airport after his guest he picked up forgot her camera on a plane. He now has two tickets; One for Dangerous Driving and driving over a solid yellow line (though he didn't make it fully). He also has been sentenced to losing his licene until he passes a evaluation drivers test, and may face a big hunk of a fine.

Us; we lose our only mode of transportation, gained a little member of my brother's teddy bear collection thanks to the Hug-a-Bear campaign, and will now always be paranoid. We don't even get a rental car because we didn't have the right insurance, and the old guy does. His insurance should give us the rental car, I mean he DID drive into us.

We are goign to see what happens now, though it is 12:30 here. Please post what you think, and how you would handle this if you were the policemen/insurance companies.

Wow man that really sucks, it always seens that when you get a luck streak you get knocked back. Hard.

best of luck in the future to you

Thanks, we hopefully will get the rental tomorrow. Though the Hug-a-bear was reallt good. it got my brother's mind off the accident.

And, I think the reason it happened was because I listened to "Viva La Vida" by Coldplay a couple hundred times that day, and I heard some bad things happen when you listen to it.

old farts who cant drive shouldn't be on the road. its a problem everywhere, and no one does anything about it.

I think you had some really bad luck.

what i would hope/ultimate ways to handle it:

-If i was the policeman i would charge that old [puncture] with everything i could

-If i was the insurance company i would open my check book and start chucking cash at you and your family

the sad reality/what is not so uncommon to happen:

-If i was the policeman, i wouldn't give a [cabbage] and try to get home as quick as possible because i was sick of work that day or i didn't like you for some stupid reason

-If i was the insurance company i would pay as little as possible and not give you anything i didn't have to, and exploit every little thing in whatever contract or whatever it is to make sure i payed up as little as possible.

Yeah they do. In Australia at least, once you're 80, you have to have a physical every year to make sure you're physically fit for driving. Once you turn 85, you have to have a driving test every year as well.

Obviously the guy in the OP's story wasn't paying anywhere near enough attention and has no grasp of road rules, but don't stereotype the elderly just because of that; it's unfair.

OT: That sucks man. I don't really know what to say aside from that. I sincerely hope the insurance issue works out for the best for your family. Just a question though, were you saying that your insurance doesn't cover the accident at all, or just doesn't give you a rental car until you get a new car? If it's the former, don't they have compulsory third-party insurance where you live?

Cool.

she lives in Sasquatchekan.

Yup. Right down the road from Bigfoot.

So they let old people drive these days? I thought they got rid of that years ago. But at least for next time, you'll have that Hug-a-Bear. For a shield.

During the winter (when all the tourists come down to Florida) I experience the onslaught of slow, eldery drivers on a daily basis. I'm just lucky I haven't been in any accidents like you.

Accidents are annoying and frustrating but they will make you wear that seatbelt for the rest of your live.

I think once you become 65+, you should be required to get eye tests every two years (paid by the government) to keep your license, with still doing the normal test every four years or whatever.

Well, I live in Canada too, and there's a few kinds of insurance. My family, for example, has the small one on the 2 old vehicles and the big one on the newer vehicle. The difference, is that the big pays for everything, while the small only pays for medical expenses.

Ok, for now we are getting a 2008 Sienna rental, the old guy had been named at fault because he had gotten two tickets, and he still faces losing his licence.

Thanks for all your support guys  It helps us all.

Maybe you should of got the right insurance then :P

But atleast nobody is physically injured, and that is generally the most important.

This is also why South Park has truth in it; you need to watch the Episode "Grey Dawn" \'

No, the vehicle pack was extra. And, just for the record - it was the old guy's fault, he was charged, and he has to pay to get us a new vehicle... or well his insurance does.

I'm American and I think we should do something like the Aussies did, except at a slightly earlier age. I'd say once you become a senior citizen, you should get checked for driving elgibility every year. Frankly too many accidents are caused by seniors who either accidently break a driving rule and jeopardize someone else's life, or mistake a gas pedal for the breaks and end up flying through a convenience store. It happened 3 times this year in my city. Now, while senior accidents may be at a lower rate than reckless teenager accidents, we need stronger limits. Its not fair that a happy family with a great life is driving down the street enjoying the day and it could easily be ruined by a careless or helpless driver.

tip it would pay me $500.00 to keep my clothes ON :(
But then again, you fail to realize that 101% of the people in this universe hate you. Yes, humankind's hatred against you goes beyond mathematical possibilities.
That tears it. I'm starting an animal rebellion using my mind powers. Those PETA bastards will never see it coming until the porcupines are half way up their asses.

I agree big time. All senior citizens should have to pass a driving test every year, like a prostate exam  But not as painful.
