John Titor

A while ago i was surfing the web and I came across the sory of John Titor. I started to do some research and watched a few videos, and read some of his actual posts and thought of it to be very interesting. I'm not saying I believe this, but it sounds extremly interesting. I find John Titor, or whoever posted all this to be a brilliant man. Even if it was a hoax. Post your thoughts.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

John Titor is the name used on several bulletin boards during 2000 and 2001 by a poster claiming to be a time traveler from the year 2036. In these posts he made numerous predictions (a number of them vague, some quite specific[1]) about events in the near future, starting with events in 2004. He described a drastically changed future in which the United States had broken into five smaller regions, the environment and infrastructure had been devastated by a nuclear attack, and most other world powers had been destroyed.

Titor's posts sparked an intense debate on the Internet with some people dismissing the claims and others defending them. In the time since Titor left the forums, the predictions for events that were supposed to occur by now have all failed to pan out. Nevertheless, the Titor postings still have their supporters who are quick to explain away these predictive failings.

To date, the story has been retold on numerous web sites, in a book, and in a play. He has also been discussed occasionally on the radio show Coast to Coast AM.[2] In this respect, the Titor story may be unique in terms of broad appeal from an originally limited medium, an Internet discussion board.

I'll give the guy who made John Tutor up props though. Never before has anyone been able to spread a, for lack of better word, silly joke upon the world before the internet.

Don't have much to speak of on this thread, to be totally honest with you. One of many nutjobs on the internet, but this one got more media attention, or was a little bit crazier.
yep, but this guy went a little farther then most people would and seems a little smarter then anyone else trying to convince people he/she has traveled through time.

Few years ago I read his posts and other articles regarding the entire issue. To me I could have believed it in 2000/01. He was an extremely convincing writer, and his thoughts were very clear and were explained and had reason.

It was quite brilliant and should be discussed in the future as a learning tool to the media & parents of how the internet does affect the world, and how fake stories can be blown out of purportion by the media.

Sounds completely nuts. According to wiki, one of his predictions was that the 2008 Olympics wouldn't happen, but obviously they did. Another was that we would discover time travel in 2001. Again, didn't happen. Another is that there should be serious civil unrest in the US circa the 2004 elections and civil war by 2005. Again, didn't happen.

The extent of mindless adherence to this nonsense apparently saw some arguing that the Beijing Olympics were all a faked conspiracy.

Oh and with any such story, the obligatory cover-your-[wagon] tactic is inevitably used:

"Since I will eventually be leaving this worldline, I could easily tell you all sorts of things that would happen in the next few years. Unfortunately, your worldline is already 2% different from mine, and theres no way to give you absolute facts about future events. When the day comes for my prediction to be realized, it may happen or it may not."

Well anyone can say "since we know the future we cant change it." If I said I was a 23 year old from 5052 where all races have melded together, all the land has been forcefully joined together, and the world is about to end, who would believe me? Even if someone did I could say since you know it will happen, no it will be changed.

It's easy to predict what will happen with America, we know right now tensions are rising between the us and Russia. Humans let their imaginations run from there and can easily make a end of the world theory.

If he was from the future and for some reason he didn't mention 9/11 something must have been really big. Also he would have mentioned important characters by name.

Whoever "John Titor" is we can be sure that he was a very intelligent and well educated person. It wasnt a simple college prank and was incredibly well thought out and in detail. Some of the things he said, in particular about the computers, just wasnt spoken of until his claims and it was proven.

I always find reading about him interesting even though it was a hoax.

I wouldn't go as far as calling him a nutcase. I remember reading his literature and messages, people with his kind of intellectual thinking/understanding/compassion are maybe 1 in 100,000, he was an extremely smart person despite (more likely than not) being an obvious hoax.

And what's to rule out that world-lines couldn't really be very different from the ones he's experienced  Would it been weird if Beijing 2008 was canceled in another path of reality? Not really... The Russia-Georgia started exactly on the day of the 1st olympic day too, not by coincidence.

Wouldn't take the stories for more than entertainment, but still an interesting read. He never belittles or gets frustrated with his readers either.

When I first heard of Titor I knew he'd probably create an excuse for predictions not coming true. Usually these future guys make vague predictions so anything that happens on the date could sound like the prediction. "Chaos will begin during the 2008 olympics". Not bothering to explain what chaos would...HOLY [bleep] PROTESTORS ATTACKED THE TORCH!!! It's true! Chaos has ensued during the Olympics! It's the end of the world!

Hey, it's not as if there've ever been olympic protests and torch attacks, right?

Well this guy seemed different. Bold, specific prophecies that are either sure-fire or completely wrong, nothing in the middle like the usual phony doomsayers. It was a pretty good strategy too. If he coincidentially predicted an event, people would flock to him. If he failed, his supporters would make an excuse.

I still think he's a bunch of baloney. It's funny how people out there can sooner follow this mysterious man of the internet claiming to be from the future, and quickly dismiss claims that any form of, say, religion is close to the truth. It boggles the mind.

And as Warri0r said, he used the usual tactic for doomsayers afraid of losing their credibility from a false claim "my predictions may or may not be true".

Here's my prediction. On January 17, 2010, an event will occur. This event will be so mysterious even I can't predict it, and it will be all over the news. It may or may not happen.

tip it would pay me $500.00 to keep my clothes ON :(
But then again, you fail to realize that 101% of the people in this universe hate you. Yes, humankind's hatred against you goes beyond mathematical possibilities.
That tears it. I'm starting an animal rebellion using my mind powers. Those PETA bastards will never see it coming until the porcupines are half way up their asses.

Apparently a lot of people say it. I own.

I think the only thing that is more ridiculous than this are the comments left on the bottom of the page. They are actually arguing about not whether aliens exist or not, but whether they have time travel.

My carbon footprint is bigger than yours...and you know what they say about big feet.

Why does this topic come up every 8 or 9 months? He was probably just some bored tube who wanted to wind up some gullible muppets online.
