urbestfreind
It really isn't hard to make decent grades. Haha, I'm in CP2, and I don't give a [expletive] about work. :D I'm sure that's the problem with most people. Heck, my parents call my classes the 'stupid classes' because I'm in 9th grade at age 14. I was 13 when I entered 9th grade. And do private schools give harder tests/courses compared to public schools? Having spent most of my school life in various private schools, save High School, I would say yes. But, you also get more help on your work (I went from an average class size of 10 to an average size of 30). I think the last private school I was in, also the largest, had around 175 kids total, from kindergarten to 8th grade (the first graduating class had 6 people). My High School now has about 2,000 people, and the Junior class (mine) is 550+ people. [hide=Funny Quotes]So you sucker punched a kid in the back of the head? Adam007
GPA is really relative. In highschool with AP classes factored in I had above a 4.0, but that just means I did well for my school. At U-M I have about a 3.4, which is alright. For med schools they expect 3.6 and above, but again, it depends somewhat on the university you're graduating from. GPA is really relative, but it probably is the easiest scale if you want to compare yourself to others.
doomy
Uhhh we grade it differently in New Zealand (Not Achieved, Achieved, Merit, Excellence) I get Merit - Excellence. So... 3-4? I'll probaly pass with Merit, close to excellence maybe though. Doomy edit: I like sheep
Rebdragon
Is my school really hard or are you all just geniuses? Seriously, how does 70% of this forum manage to get a 90+ average? I don't really get it either. It must be a side effect of introvertedness and a geeky lifestyle or something. BlueLancer
Is my school really hard or are you all just geniuses? Seriously, how does 70% of this forum manage to get a 90+ average? I more or less screwed up in school, the GPA equivalent would be around 2.5 or less. I simply wasn't interested in most subjects. I got into a business college based on a lengthy admission test though (that everyone had to pass in order to be accepted, with about 25% acceptance rate) and finished with a MBA degree. If they just admitted students based on high school diplomas I probably wouldn't've even gotten a further degree due to being inadmissible. LilDefenders
I'm in Junior year and when I got my transcript at the beginning of the year I had a 3.482 cumulative, and I'm only in the top 25% of my class, but our class only has 150 people in it. It's a 4.0 grade scale here at our school because AP classes don't go up to 5.0. Doesn't matter though because I'm not in any anyways. I've yet to take SAT or ACT. So I think I'm doing pretty well for being pretty active in sports and being someone who procrastinates a lot, but who doesn't?
Igor
You still have to remember that some schools are much harder than others. Not trying to be a loser here, but my school is really hard, as it's one of the better private high schools in the country. But say, um, midwestern alaskan high might be really easy, and you get a 1,0 at your school is more like a 2,5 at the other school. If a man is not a worker, he is nothing.BOSS. Chemistry and Algebra (or Geometry) should be the only ones that mess you up. I applaud you on not procrastinating =D> How do you mess up in chemistry and Algebra? Algebra is easy, I either slept or did work for other classes in Algebra and got a B, and I never did homework in there. Ever. It's too easy. Geometry is a [bleep] to learn though, you have my sympathy if you do bad in Geometry. Chemistry is easy though. I had 101-107% in Chemistry for most of the year...Haven't found a better way to end the school day than by blowing something up. The "Big Boom Guy" should agree here. People would do so much better in classes if they took half the time used text messaging and turned that into focus on the class. I get asked to help people who I know don't ever focus on the class itself. Let their their other idiot friends teach them, I have work from my last class I could be doing here, instead of at home. assassin_696
How does the university admissions process work in America? Do they select based on your GPA? How many can/do you apply to? BlueLancer
How does the university admissions process work in America? Do they select based on your GPA? How many can/do you apply to? Generally, the people I know applied to around 5-10 unis. They will require a copy of your earlier school/college diplomas, but it's not the only criteria. First you need to know what degree you're going to pursue. In almost all cases you'll need to write an application essay explaining why you should be admitted in. If you were very talented in college and have good references, you may even get a scholarship & fully paid tuition (which can be a huge economic advantage, because some good universities charge $5000-$40,000 per year). If you apply for more specific degrees like master of arts, you will also need to provide examples of previous work you have finished. In addition, to be eligible you will usually have to obtain an ACT or SAT score prior to applying. At least where it concerns SAT's, there should be one each month in any given testing center. Toxic388
I moved from Ukraine in summer of '05. Went to a highschool as a junior. In ukraine, I was a C/B student because I was lazy as hell and had soccer practice everyday. But in the states, I got a 4.0 GPA throughout junior and senior year with hardly any work done. I mean I was playing rs everyday after school  , didn't bother with homework. But now I'm in college and I'm a B student. I just don't like sitting down and doing homework. ~Retired 10/17/07~"One of the great things about books is sometimes there are some fantastic pictures." - George W. First you need to know what degree you're going to pursue (err, vaguely... you kind of need to have a basic idea of what you like (i.e., engineering, business, science, etc.) but most people don't need to pick their degree/major until Junior year of college/uni). In almost all cases you'll need to write an application essay explaining why you should be admitted in (eh, yes and no... the essay is meant mainly to flesh you out, to make you more than just a few numbers and words on a piece of paper. An essay, depending on how well it's written, can make or break an application, especially at super-competitive schools like the Ivies) . If you were very talented in high school and have good references (2 or 3 teachers right a short essay about you for the colleges) , you may even get a scholarship & fully paid tuition (which can be a huge economic advantage, because some good universities charge $5000-$40,000 per year). (getting tuition payed for in full is very, very rare, but the vast majority of people get at least some form of scholarship/financial aid) If you apply for more specific degrees like master of arts, you will also need to provide examples of previous work you have finished (things like arts and hotel management are based more on things outside of general high school work, but the majority of applications are focused almost entirely on schoolwork and being a well-rounded person (work, extracurriculars, community service, etc.)). In addition, to be eligible you will usually have to obtain an ACT or SAT score prior to applying (for most places). At least where it concerns SAT's, there should be one each month in any given testing center (and generally the max is three times to take the test, any more uni's frown upon) . Are you from the US? You've got the right idea but you kind of sound like you're talking from Europe. ReapMe
I thought I was pretty smart, graduated 7th in my class with a 3.78 but seems like some people here are geniuses. Only the top 15% or so was over 3.0 in my class, guess my school was bad lol if you aren't 1, then your class rank or gpa will mean nothing. getting accepted into a public state university is a cinch, so many ways to get accepted that i had all 5 requirements when i only needed one. I'm 3rd year college, have a 3.5 gpa now, i can't imagine how some people can get 4.0 :ohnoes: What?

Here it's all done through a centralised system, called UCAS. You fill the form in online putting down qualifications achieved (GCSE's, A-levels etc.) personal details, a personal statement (essay describing you want to do the subject) and then a reference from a teacher. You can apply to a maximum of 5 unis or 4 medical schools. If you get offers they'll require a certain number of A-levels at certain grades (eg. AAA) and the offer is (almost always) conditional on achieving those grades. Some universities interview, all medical schools do and the Oxford and Cambridge interviews are notorious. The difference I guess is that you have to apply with a definite degree preference, whereas you can specialise much later on in the US. Jaziek
but our class only has 150 people in it. it feels kind of weird reading stuff like that. My year has a grand total of 37 people in it. 10 of which do exactly the same subjects, and we're all aiming for pretty much exactly the same grades. Asassin, when did you start doing your UCAS app?
