30-January-2009 Penguin bannings

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

As you may be aware, there was a recent bug whereby some players were able, unfairly, to gain unusually-large rewards from penguin spotting.

We have taken action against a number of players who gained more rewards than normal as a result of this bug.

All offences committed, and actions taken by Jagex as a result, are private matters between Jagex and the account holder. They are not suitable for discussion in a publicly-visible forum, either by the player concerned or by another player posting on their behalf. The correct course of action for the affected player to take is to use the Appeal Bans & Mutes system from the Help menu.

We are not going to 'name and shame' players, nor will we disclose what action has been taken against any specific account.

However, we would like to clarify several points:

1) Offences were all applied manually. This was not an automated mass-ban.

We don't release details about exactly how we catch people cheating, as these could help would-be cheaters avoid detection. However, we can say that every single player who has had action taken against them as a result of this incident was dealt with manually.

2) No-one has had action taken against them just because they happened to be in the area while other players were exploiting the bug.

We do not punish players just for being present while bug abuse is taking place.

3) All players affected by this have received an inbox message to explain what has happened.

If you are one of these players and you have not yet checked your inbox on the account in question, please do so.

4) Offences will be reviewed manually.

We will manually review every single account against which we have taken action today.

5) All offences should be considered temporary until the review has taken place.

Following the review, it is possible that some players may be permanently banned for this. It is likely that some of the players currently banned may be allowed back into the game with no further action.

Finally, we would just like to remind you once again that discussing this issue on the forums is not permitted because it concerns private account details. Threads about this issue may be locked with no warning.

Many thanks,

Mod Jon H

Ughhh. People shouldn't HAVE to wait.

For the innocent, this is absolutely asinine.

EDIT: First post for the lulz.

EDITEDIT: Apparently they're working out manually reviewing accounts as we speak...my bad! I thought that the people wrongfully banned would have to wait all weekend. Boy am I glad I didn't make an [wagon] out of myself on the RSOF >.>

NOW I think it's time to ask for a refund of this month's subscriptions: sorry but I've been banned for 3 weeks this month now, all which are "incorrect" (and they admitted it)... This is no longer playing, this is just walking from ban to ban for me!

First they came to fishing

and I didn't speak out because I wasn't fishing

Then they came to the yews

and I didn't speak out because I didn't cut yews

Then they came for the ores

and I didn't speak out because I didn't collect ores

Then they came for me

and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Dumb. Guilty till proven innocent

Which is why they reviewed each case individually to make sure the guilty people are actually guilty...

And pulli, I might have the wrong person in mind so it might not be you, but were you the one who admitted in forsakenmage cc that you got 3k penguin points from the glitch?

tip it would pay me $500.00 to keep my clothes ON :(
But then again, you fail to realize that 101% of the people in this universe hate you. Yes, humankind's hatred against you goes beyond mathematical possibilities.
That tears it. I'm starting an animal rebellion using my mind powers. Those PETA bastards will never see it coming until the porcupines are half way up their asses.

Apparently a lot of people say it. I own.

A sad excuse for Jagex unfairly banning players who gained XP normally. Their criteria for catching players who they think participated in the glitch is nothing short of stupid. Actually, in anything that was big in RS history with a glitch, they claim that they punished the players fairly when in fact they didn't, because they don't want to waste time looking into who did what and when and where.

Well, firstly they said it was temporary while they manually sift through the banned accounts. AND they're doing it as we speak, which shocked me. I thought people were going to have to wait until the next business day for these manual reviews to be processed.

Already an innocent TIF'er, G_P_Kid, was unbanned. (He admits to this on another thread, see "Mass banning for penguins?".)

Um, I don't fully understand what this whole Penguin mess/ minigame is, could someone explain this? From what I've heard, it was an experience booster, that was from multi-clicking a penguin. However, that is all I understand.

Rather than rewrite it here, you can see an explanation of the glitch within the first couple of posts here: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=781328

Explanation of the game here: http://www.tip.it/runescape/?page=pengu ... d_seek.htm :) Each penguin should only be able to be found once per week, however the glitch was allowing users to "find" one of them multiple times.

#2 is horribly wrong. 6 of my clan members were in the area at the time. They did not try to exploit the bug, they were merely watching the whole incident. i was also their trying to exploit the bug but was unable to. Nothing happened to me lol

I'm pretty sure they will get their accounts unbanned because they didn't get any exp but jagex did say they banned everyone manually, couldn't they see that these people didn't get ridiculous amounts of exp?

They said that they'd be reviewing each case individually, as to free wrongfully banned players, so it's no surprise that you're all unbanned if you didn't do anything wrong. :P
