Drivers permit

On the topic of young people driving, I have a mini rant that I want to get off my chest.

Why does the general population of people under 25 have the idea that driving an automatic makes you unmanly and a bad driver, or that an automatic is a bad choice?

See, a manual isn't any harder to drive than an auto you morons, it just means eating while driving is harder. My '02 toyota carolla auto may be a chicks car, but it sure has more balls than almost all the cars owned by younger people I know of.

90% of conversations I hear about people getting cars goes like this:

Hey man I just got a 198* x.

Is it a manual?

Yeah man, why the hell would I get an automatic? I know how to drive a manual, people who get automatics are bad drivers because they can't push in a clutch and change gears because it's so difficult. I can do it, which makes me a good enough driver to try and drift around a corner and total my $350 car that I bought on a whim from the guy down the road because it has racing stripes on it.

:wall:

So not having to change gears is easier? Elaborate.

And you think that everyone who has a manual car drifts and [bleep]s around in their cheap cars?

How could anyone possibly think that driving a manual in an urban area is a good idea?

I have better things to do than change gears every thirty seconds because of traffic lights. And on an automatic, at least I can eat, drink or fondle the girl in the passenger seat and still be able to drive.

Having to change gears is no more difficult than not having to, it's just different.

I don't think everyone with a manual car does that, but I have noticed the majority of those with the "manual cars are manly, auto cars are for women and bad drivers" mentality seem to.

I lost my study book and cbf finding it. Yeah I'm 16 and about 4 months and still don't have my learners :wall:

I got mine when I was 16 and 3 months, so it's not that bad. I still don't have my license, and I have been eligible to get it since January 4th. I just don't want to pay for insurance #-o

Uh, man I'm glad I live where I live. Learner's at 14, only had to have that for 90 days then I got my restricted license when I was just under 14 and a half.

As for whoever said driving stops being fun once you've had all the transmission fluid leak from your care, slide on a patch of ice and bust out the front headlight within a week of getting it back from the shop, and hit a deer at 35 mph within a month of that...that's nothin. I've had so much crap happen to my car it's not even funny, but I still love driving. ::'

If you're looking for fun in your driving, try driving 350 miles with no heater and the inside of your car is below freezing - once you've done that, try doing it with sandwiches in your shoes (gas station didn't have hand/feet warmers), once you've done that try it without cruise control. All of that added up to me jamming the gas pedal so I could warm my feet and my car ended up going 94 mph but I wasn't paying attention nor did I care (damn cop cared tho >.<). Oh, then on the way back I was driving along when I saw a family of deer crossing the road ahead...there were 2 on the road and one on each shoulder so there wasn't much I could do so I just hoped for the best. Managed to squeeze between two of them (they were each within a foot of my car) going 75 mph...now THAT puts the fun back in driving if the aforementioned freezing feet drive doesn't. ;)

Yeah, I have a lot of driving stories....mostly because I like to drive.

May the presents of our lord and savior, Santa, be with you this holiday season!

EXACTLY!! Spoken by a truely wise person.

Im not fond of Manual due to gears in traffic, but i suppose Auto is for those who just want to get from point A to B and Cruise along. I myself Drive auto (Till next month) and on long stretches its boring as hell, but traffic wise has saved my arse.

Who uses cruise control?

The rare automatic motorcycle: Ridley. Only for old people (I hope). As for cars, a lot of people live in urban areas, so manual transmissions don't make a whole lot of sense. Also, more and more cars are coming out with paddle shifter options with an automatic clutch (or sport shift), so I bet we'll start seeing the traditional manual transmission lose even more popularity (sales).

Who uses cruise control?

People who have to drive 350 miles on one of the most boring stretches of road in the entire nation. Why would anyone not use cruise if they had it available to them?

I passed the written form on first try & failed the actual driving test once. Don't be let down if you fail it; I did because of driving roughly 10 miles over the speed limit constantly. Didn't even realize it after it was over, just wise up and genuinely listen to the advice the instructor gives you if you happen to fail. A lot of people pass both tests on the first try though. Never had any serious accidents or fines ever since getting the card

Here are 2 questions from my practice test that I can remember: (Note, the questions and answeres are very close to the actual thing).

"What do you do at a stop sign"

a- Ignore it and don;t stop.

b- Stop look to see if any other people were there first then go.

c- Get out of car and dance.

d- Stop in middle of intersection and honk randomly.

"Select any of the following things, that you are not allowed to do while driving"

a-make a tomato sandwich

b-Touch the steering wheel with both hands

c-Apply makeup

d-Play games on your laptop

I felt like I was tkaing a test for dummies =(

People here use cruise control all the time. Makes your foot less tired, since a lot of folks can drive 40 miles on one stretch of highway at a time.

I'm yet to even turn fifteen, so my practice is all illegal. I feel like such a rebel when I drive around the block. I'm kinda scared of driving, though. I don't know why. I just have a fear that I'll [bleep] up and go too slow.

Written was easy for me, passed without studying, except a quick go of the online trial on the net. Can go for my P1 licence in May, once I get the other 78 hours of driving done.

I drive an automatic. With one exception, everyone I know drives an automatic. And that one guy that drives a manual doesn't try to shove it in anyone's face ever.

I'd say the only advantage of driving and owning a manual is no one will borrow your car.

There's no such thing as regret. A regret means you are unhappy with the person you are now,

and if you're unhappy with the person you are, you change yourself. That

regret will no longer be a regret, because it will help to form the new,

better you. So really, a regret isn't a regret.

It's experience.

Haha true. Though, manuals also tend to have better gas mileage, so there is one advantage that may be worth it. My dad made me learn on a manual, so that is all that I drive. Starting out it was hard, but now it's just as easy as driving an automatic. Except when my transmission doesn't want to go into third gear and throws my shift down to first gear while going 30 mph. :wall:

I'm definitely learning on a manual. I usually take ours out to drive, but sometimes I use our automatic. I say it isn't particularly hard, unless you're caught in bad traffic. But I've always been quick with my feet, I guess.

I still want a motorcycle, though.

He means even though you have done the hours, in the general term, "screw the details". just throw some random amounts in that total your hours, as long as you've done them though. otherwise i dare not want to be in a car with you. ::'
