ONE of four boys charged with raping an eight-year-old girl in the US state of Arizona last week will be prosecuted as an adult.

 

 

 

The details of the case have shocked local officials and provoked outrage across the United States after the parents of the young victim disowned her on grounds she had "shamed" her family.

 

 

 

Officers responding to screams from an empty shed in an apartment complex on July 16 found the partially-clothed girl and four boys aged 9 to 14 running away.

 

 

 

The four boys had lured the girl into the shed with chewing gum.

 

 

 

They held her down and took turns raping her for about 10 to 15 minutes, according to Phoenix police.

 

 

 

The girl's parents shocked officers when they said she had brought shame to the family and did not want her back.

 

 

 

"This is a deeply disturbing case that has gripped our community," Maricopa County lawyer Andrew Thomas said.

 

 

 

"Our office will seek justice for the young victim in this heartrending situation."

 

 

 

The girl is now in the custody of Arizona Child Protective Services.

 

 

 

No charges will be filed against the parents, police said.

 

 

 

"They didn't abandon the child," Phoenix police sergeant Andy Hill said.

 

 

 

"They committed no crime. They just didn't support the child, which led to CPS coming over there."

 

 

 

The oldest boy, a 14 year-old, will be tried as an adult on charges of kidnapping and sexual assault.

 

 

 

The other three boys - aged 9, 10, and 13 - were charged as juveniles with sexual assault and kidnapping.

 

 

 

"We've had young people who have been victims of sexual assault, but the thing that distinguishes this is the age of the victim, the age of the suspects and the response of the parents," Sergeant Hill said.

 

 

 

People from across the US had called wanting to adopt the child or provide money, he said.

 

 

 

"It's been unbelievably fantastic in terms of support for the child," he said.

 

 

 

"People from eight or nine states have called."

Nine and ten year old boys can rape someone...? I didn't even know what I had until I was about 11 or 12.

 

 

 

Now, they'd all better hope to change cities, if not states. Those three won't have friends at all. Unless Arizona is wierder than I thought, every single student will hate and want to punish them.

 

 

 

I'd like to know more about the people and families involved. Fourteen-year-old doesn't give me much information. And it's likely that the girl's family is Muslim, or perhaps Mormon. Those are the only grounds I could see someone disowning their daughter over this for, unless they're all just nuts.

I frequent Digg and I had not heard of this until today. You're the only one so far that has heard about this before.

When I saw the title I wanted to comment something along the lines of "she was asking for it". But she's only 8 for christ's sake. And she obviously wasn't asking for it. And one of the boys was only 9? wtf? I barely had any idea as too how sex worked when I was nine. What was the motive exactly of these boys? Cause 9 isn't the age where all you can think about is sex. And even if it was, why go after an eight year old girl? At that age, they barely even resemble women. All they did was permanatly screw up this poor girl. Way to be, guys...way to be.

I haven't heard about this story, nor a lot of other news related ones. TIF usually brings it to my attention quicker than any other media source. That being said though, he's right about threads like these having little discussion value.

People were wondering about the culture/background of the girl and her family.

 

I looked it up again, it appears that both the girl and the boys were from Liberian families. That says nothing about the religion, but there you go...

Probably shamed the family because she lost her virginity before marriage or at such a young age which would lead to her being frowned upon by society. (Just a personal opinion)

The boys sound like they have some serious issues. But what is most horrible is that the family is just leaving this girl to deal with it herself. That family is seriously screwed. And in turn, they will get a screwing from a LOT of people.
