Wingless
hai der, 4giv me if dis is postd elsewhar. if is, pls move/delete. This is not complaining about the LACK of literacy - I don't mind that. It's about the abuse you can get. This isn't a rant, so don't start flaming me saying that I called everyone illiterate. Today, I was simply getting 86 defence at Monkey Guards because I had about 30K defence. Soon, two pures came into the room and started fighting normally. Okay, everything is fine and quiet. One of the pures asks to the other one what he was training, and he replied Strength (obviously  ) The pure then asks me, and I said "I don't see what use it'll be." and the guy who asked me said Sorry (I apologized to, saying if I were too rude and gave him a few Anti-poisons) Edit: My fault, I SHOULD have put this in first The 2nd pure says how he thinks I'm "so posh" and "showing off" because I used proper words instead of the abbreviated versions like u, ur, r etc. He calls me high and mighty (for the first time), and how I should get a life because all I've done in my life is play RuneScape and spell like a fat nerd. Then everything fell silent... ...Then, a few seconds later the 2nd pure says to the guy who asked me: (Yes, the spelling that he says is correct.) "Quik apolgise to sir high and imghty" (Even though we clearly had done) and I replied simply, "What is correct spelling got to do with being 'High and Mighty?'" and he replies "posh ****** u stck 2 carots urp ur [wagon]" I simply reply "How old are you, to retaliate to me because I asked a question. Have you even been educated?" (Yes, that WAS rude - but he aggravated me). He replied: "Im 21 so hw can i be still be educted" Then, he went into an all-out "RAEG" and starting calling me an '[wagon]' along with many other stars. I simply reported him and ignored him. The point is not how rude pures are (I've come across many nice ones), but for someone to go all out and start being extremely rude to me because I can spell correctly, and prefer people to UNDERSTAND what I'm typing - isn't that a bit to OTT? EpicWin
Well known fact that most of the pures lack of common sense and IQ, not even surprised anymore. Just ignore the arrogant people, simple as that. Been doing that since RS2 came out.
Laura
While popularized to be an epidemic among pures, I find it to be grossly underestimated among regular 'Scapers.
AlexDT
When complaining about lack of literacy, it is advisable to edit your post very carefully. Such a high number of grammatical and spelling errors detract from your credibility. I'm not saying that everyone must type in flawless English; after all, not everyone is able to type 100+ words per minute, and therefore sometimes a little carelessness is necessary to maintain a reasonable conversation speed. I'm sure this post is not structured as well as it could be. However, I'm not the one nitpicking, while at the same time confusing prepositions with adverbs, and mixing tenses. Heck, even your ability to capitalise correctly is underdeveloped. That is all.

I'm simply saying that why do people get so angry if you spell correctly - not precisely using grammar. He DID use grammar in some of his sentences. The capital letters being everywhere randomly is a habit from an old Chatroom type MMO, where to speak to certain things, you had to use capital letters. When complaining about lack of literacy I'm not complaining about the lack of it, I'm not even complaining. I'm asking a question: Why be abused for correct spelling (not grammar). However, I'm not the one nitpicking
Seraphi
People are lazy and can't be bothered to use backspace to correct their mistakes. They also refuse to spend an extra second to type "You" instead of "u" (Because hell, their time must be absolutely priceless if they're playing Runescape)
Bauke
It is obvious that nowadays, kids don't care about spelling correctly anymore. Ever since internet came up, chat language was introduced, and this slowly deteriorated the way people are spelling. Now, college students often lack proper spelling (this has been investigated in Holland). It's a trend. If you feel the need to spell properly, many will regard you as some sort of nerd. After all, if you understand it, it's good enough, right? It's a shame really. Any errors or oddities in this post are probably due to the fact that I'm not a native English speaker. Toad
I prefer to type normally because it helps outside of scape with things like if you're typing up an essay or something, it'll help you get it done quicker, and a few characters more doesn't really hurt. AlexDT
I'm not complaining about the lack of it, I'm not even complaining. I'm asking a question: Why be abused for correct spelling (not grammar). I don't know. Why didn't you ask the pure that abused you? You've only presented one example, and to be completely honest, I've only ever had my writing style negatively acknowledged once in Runescape. Alright, alright, that's not a very good answer. His parents went through a messy divorce, and because of this he was forced to leave school prematurely. He is now emotionally unstable and jealous of people with higher levels of literacy. Alternatively, he was having a bad day. Have you ever had a bad day? Your code has a sneakily hidden indentation error, the shower head is half-broken, and there are crumbs in your bed. You're just as likely to complain about someone's eyebrow shape as their poor socio-economic ideals. Incidentally, only quoting half-sentences is another sure-fire way to demonstrate that you do not understand basic semantic concepts.everyone should speak in flawless English

paul191600
I hate random pures in general, most of them are arrogant and annoying, and think that they are better than everybody else becuase they maxed one stat. However there are some cool pures out there, not trying to be biased or anything. Wheels
People don't like it when they feel inferior or dumber than someone. I would expect this to be the reason he lashed out at you so harshly. Well, that and the fact that it seems he is clearly not 21. I'd say he sees 21 as a nice milestone age where all his immature actions could be justified by the fact that he is basically free to do just about anything (if he's American of course). Maybe he's just a foreigner with mediocre english skills. Or maybe he's one of our famous and beloved "12 year old" 'Scapers. You never really know. ¯\(°_o)/¯ I'm curious as to why you automatically assumed that your proper spelling was the reason for him being an [wagon]...or did you leave something out? Are you winning The Game?

Folks saying "Fallz", in a mini-game like Soul wars or something really gets on my nerves. I wouldn't mind just "Fall"..they just have to go the one extra step and make themselves look like idiots. "Fallz 4 G Rush!@" :wall: I get called a WBM almost daily for using (somewhat?) correct grammar, "Omg your not a mod don't talk like that@!" Oh my... :| Pures (A large majority of 'em), I must agree are probably the worst for this kind of thing (No offence..). And yes, he was very OTT. ;) RIP Michaelangelopolous

I suppose it is my fault- I left out a part of the conversation because I felt my post was already too long  (I don't post much on TIF, I lurk more). It was basically him saying that my spelling is so posh and how he thinks I'm showing off by using proper words - not to mention calling me high and mighty, which he says again... (AND again  ) I edited the part that should have been put into the post in the first place.
darkjakx
I can't say I've ever been abused for typing correctly. I always try to because it helps communicating online. I know very little internet chat so I don't assume that other people would know it. It took me a while to find out of Rofl meant. I dont have a real problem with anyone else talking like that though except for ur. Whenever someone types ur I think that they're saying err not your/you're. Grasle
I've had a taste of it, sure, but I can't say I've been 'abused' enough to irritate me severely. People have certainly made comments about my grammar, few any form of insult however. Maybe you've got bad luck? Then again, I tend to avoid pures; the stereotype branded on them is far too accurate in most cases. Just try to tune 'em out best you can. The real truth behind their actions is intimidation. They are intimidated by you, speaking [more] correctly against the majority. In the very least, take pleasure in that.
