make a racist comment against Blacks, Jews, Mexicans, Asians, or any other race you can think of. In any form of online place (no, im not counting 4chan or any other board such as that, keep that filth out of this topic) you would instantly be kicked or muted.

 

Just throwing this out there but in a lot of online game communities (HoN, Lineage II private servers, few others) there is a lot of "hate" against BR's (Brazilians) and Russians. (There was a "polish zerg" too on one L2 server that everyone hated, won't go into that though).

There's a big conflict between Turks and everyone else in Silkroad Online. (no, I don't play that game anymore, but that's basically all I remember - the public chat being spammed by "stfu turks" followed by Turkish rambling) And Adrenal, in some FPSs I've played, there's a lot of hate towards Mexicans and Brazilians since they lag a lot. D:

People make (negative) remarks about nationalities all the time. Often jokes. But you probably don't pay much attention to them unless they're about America/Americans since they're not directed towards you.

To all the people saying American is not a race, a race is nothing more then a social construct in modern understanding, it does not require common genetics or ethnicity, and as there IS a certain type of culture [although I'm not too sure what it is] about Americans it supports them being a race.

Heh. To be honest I find it a lot of fun in an MMO to have such an animosity between countries. It feels like some sort of war, and I have tons of stories about going up against the Brazilian/Polish/Russian zerg on lineage II servers :P.

 

In HoN though people hate them because, in all honesty, a lot of players from Brazil are just not very good at the game, at all. Coupled with the fact that they can hardly understand you (and vice-versa) and its not fun :P.

From personal experience, when traveling in other countries, it always tends to be the Americans who are unpleasant and actually rather racist and not the other way around. While I know that all Americans are not like that, especially because I know tons of very nice people in the United States, it's the rude ones traveling abroad that give you the reputation. And then of course the media and ridiculous reality TV shows will also shed a negative light on you. So yes, in many people's experiences, Americans probably were pretty obnoxious and rude with them and this is what causes a lot of this. Not all of it, of course. Some people just hate on stuff because other people do, without knowing much about what they're hating on.

 

Personally, if I'm making fun of the US it's usually back at someone whose made fun of Canada too (and usually started it first, heh). Unless they are very serious about it, I'm probably not serious about any claims I make, heh.

 

Let people have their opinions: prove them wrong. If you ever visit another country and they mention it, try to prove them wrong too.

I deal with a lot of anti-Americanism in the clan chat that I spend time in while I play. It's annoying, but I make the best of it by doing the same thing right back. For example, there's a lot of Kiwis (people from New Zealand; I have no idea what you would call someone from New Zealand other than a Kiwi) that hang out in the chat. When one of them starts going on about Americans, I just ask them how the weather is in Australia this week.

 

People from New Zealand hate being called Australians. It's very effective.

It is not what people say that is racist, it is the context. I know several African kids at my school who say "What up [racist term]'" Is that racist? No.

If you say the same back to the kids at my school in the same way as a friendly greeting, they get extremely serious about it they act very offended about it and how "You aren't allowed to use our word".

Actually its not like that in my school. Its not about color but about how you act.. I see mexicans talking to blacks calling each other "[racist term]s" and no one cares. Its ok if you act " gangsta."

... Not that it's good or right. I am not justifying racism (or whatever the correct term in this case is...).

 

I'm not going to pretend like I know what goes on in their heads and make a generalization like it's proven fact, but I don't think racism offends people because they feel it's hateful.

I think it actually bothers them because they feel that their inherent authority of being able to control what someone can say is being denied.

Also, I've seen plenty of instances where someone simply uses (or even bends) another's words to have an excuse to start trouble; They are being offended to be offended.

 

To actually be on topic:

It's tolerated because 'Americans' includes members from every race on the planet, and because the stereotypes are widely believed by citizens of other countries.

However, as said directly above, because of America's being a melting pot of all individual races and nationalities the perceived 'blame' in such comments is divided up amongst all of them.

This is why you can't say something like "All Africans are stupid. As hell."... You are then pushing the entirety of the 'blame' of that comment onto one particular nationality which overwhelmingly consists of a single race.

 

There's more to be said... There's always more to be said.

Americans are more incline to be less intelligent and culturally educated as European races if you think about it.

 

Since we are in a trophy age, where people get fancy degrees because "daddy" can pay for them and we have laws like "No Child Left Behind" and everyone bows to the "bill"(money). This is opposed as my father said he use to go to an Italian school his family funded in Egypt, where he got no special treatment, went to school 6 days a week, and the school day started like 2hrs before what I start at.

 

Language is also something that plays a big part in intellectual growth. Because we consider Canada and Mexico second rate countries, we have little incentive to actually learn other languages then English. As opposed to when I went to Greece and a Greek person kept apologizing to me for their bad Italian, when they spoke Italian almost as well as me, and in France the same thing happened where people apologized for their "poor English" and yet they speak better then the hillbillies in America. Knowing more then one language obviously introduces you to a different culture, etc. but it also increases your ability to register and process information. The more languages you practice, the more able you are to think in different ways and such, which would make you adept at dealing with situations.

 

Plus if you speak a different language where I live, you're basically seen as a foreigner who should "go back to your own country". I'm in high school, and I was discussing something private with my friend in Arabic because I was troubled, and this half-pint nerd was getting annoyed because he couldn't understand, and he's like go back to your own country to make your terrorist plots, "ala mohammad jihad derka derka". Ha. Why is THAT tolerated? It goes both ways.

Probably because of the igloo idea and all those stereotypes too, I remember when my father told me that he met some americans at the military base (as that's where he worked, and a Canadian military base, as we live in Canada), and that they were stumped that we had buildings, I mean, my father laughed his [wagon] out for a long time because of that.
