Dev Blog: Quoth Mod Raven

Greetings players,

To many of you, my name will already be familiar as one of the gold crowned mods who wandered the forums as part of the Community Management team, some of you may even have been members of my clan on FunOrb. To others, I shall say hello, Im Mod Raven, nice to meet you.

I recently left the Community Management team and joined the RuneScape Content team - quite a big change, I can assure you; however, the content team members are friendly (if a little eccentric) and, after several conversations about which superhero is better than the others, I realised that this was going to be a great team to work with.

After the initial training period (under the watchful eye of Mod Mazs squirrels) I was handed my first project. My original project suggestion was discounted - I had hoped to create a mass hypnosis program to control the minds of anyone who logged into RuneScape, but I was told that my schemes for world domination would have to wait, and were a little too Batman villain-esque. The project I've been given is far more interesting...

Indeed, as you may have gathered from the title, my first project as part of the content team will be this year's Halloween update!

Now, you may say, "But Mod Raven, Halloween is months away", because it is. Alas, though, content takes rather more time than a few weeks to make and we really need to start early to make sure that time-sensitive content (such as this) is ready and in working order well in advance, so that our QA team can go to work. This means that, more often than not, we need to start the seasonal content as early as we possibly can.

Still, the content is currently in the early stages and as I write this Im currently working on the basic concepts. Some of the ideas I had are now out of the window for various reasons. Although I still think the one devoted to the worship of ravens is a good concept and not even slightly narcissistic. I dont want to say what the current working concept is for several reasons, but mostly I dont want to spoil the surprise and also because, at this stage, everything can change at the drop of a scythe (pun intended, and that's not a hint ;)).

I am currently wandering the forums looking at Halloween suggestions, so, if you post your ideas now, chances are Ill have a look at them. I cant promise that your ideas will make it into the game, but you never know, there might be the odd reference. Obviously, theres no point suggesting items with stats as a reward or anything that would unbalance the game; Halloween is meant to be just for fun, after all.

Ya know what.... I don't actually care about a pointless update in October which should only be a supplementary distraction from the main game. Why do they waste their time on a Dev Blog for something like this, opposed to the new dungeon, high level smithing update or dare I say it... the new skill?

It's been a hell of a ride.

Since Mod Raven is new to the content team, Jagex can't just "give him the reins" so to speak and let him work on a major piece of content. He doesn't have the right experience yet to handle that responsibility. So Jagex assigned him to write an easy short article on a small, and as you put it, "pointless" update to get his feet wet. It's like any other newbie fetching coffee, answering phones, inputting data, etc at his new job. Just be patient and I'm sure we'll see heavier content coming from Mod Raven. :)

Well, in typical Jagex form they're talking about updates that are more than half a year away, but it's something that we know they'll have to release in a time period and won't be able to push back indefinitely.

[DevBlog] Community Management: Supporting Clans http://services.runescape.com/m=devblog/view_post.ws?post_id=89

Hey guys, Im Mod Timbo and Im the head of Clan Support here in Community Management. My job is to be the liaison between clans and our content teams and be on hand to give help and advice, while also creating events and competitions for clans - like our Clan Celebration Month and Jagex Cup. In this CMBlog, Im going to say a little about our latest series of events from the Clan Celebration Month, what to expect from our next Jagex Cup and what I do on a day-to-day basis.

Clan support comes in many shapes and sizes from the big (e.g. Jagex Cup), to the slightly smaller tasks of reading and posting in all of the clan forums. Our aim is to provide an easy access platform for two-way feedback about clans, to help support a heavily player-driven community and continue to promote and showcase this fantastic society. To help achieve these aims, we created a number of different initiatives like the clan database, Clan Leaders forum, clans Knowledge Base article and Clan Submissions Page.

One of the key areas in all of these initiatives is promotion of the community and ensuring that people know about clans. Getting more people involved with clans not only helps them to create and build communities of their own, but also brings more people into the community to ensure that it continues to thrive.

Clan Celebration Month

The Clan Celebration Month was originally an idea to get all of the clans together, have a laugh and learn more about different aspects of the community while promoting it to the players of RuneScape. From there it eventually evolved into a comprehensive series of events for everyone to get involved in. With each week themed to a particular area of the clan community, it was geared up to be a great month of showcasing what were up to.

One of my main aims was to create a series of events that were original and required a lot of clan interaction and involvement from the clan support J-Mods themselves. With unique events such as roleplaying an entire city or area with player-owned city clans and reenacting battles from the God Wars in live action roleplaying scenarios in-game, it was going to be a very experimental set of events. We did, of course, put in a few favourites such as Agility training and monster hunting/PKing with some other activities like Blast Furnace, so there would be something for everyone.

It was a fantastic month that illustrated how great the clan community is. We all had some fun, got a chance to experience what other clans do in their day-to-day life and, most of all, we enjoyed the game together.

The Jagex Cup

Last year, I sat down with Mod Mat K in one of our meetings about clan support and said to him, "Wouldnt it be an awesome idea if we could have a competition to see who was the best clan in RuneScape?". After a bit of discussion, which consequently more than doubled our meeting time, we had a very rough draft of what we titled The Jagex Cup (with a few smilies and illustrations of clans PKing each other). We wanted a competition that any clan from RuneScape could take part in and prove themselves to be the best. So we decided to run a series of combat, skilling and combination (battling in Stealing Creation where you can PvP and skill) competitions that would cater for the entire clan community.

The key was allowing absolutely anyone to enter any of the competitions we held with the only exception being the combination competition where you had to be a member to play Stealing Creation. The combat competition was based around free-to-play Clan Wars, the skilling competition was going to see who could produce the best five hours of XP in a certain skill, and the combination competition was to see who could combine their skilling and combat skills together to overcome their opponents.

What I want to do this year is go even further than we did last year and build on what the players fed back to us during the event. Some of the new ideas for the next Jagex Cup include having specialised divisions' within some of the overall competitions, like the combat competition. This would then allow for level-restricted, pure and player-capped divisions within the combat competition, while having the main competition progressing in a similar fashion to last years. As well as changes to the way each competition works, were not forgetting to improve some of the features that could have been a bit better last time, such as the registration system. This is something that Im going to be having open discussion with the community on over the coming weeks, so make sure that you check out our Clan Discussion forum and Clan Submissions Page for more info. :)

The futures so bright, I gotta wear shades

What we do on a day-to-day basis helps shape our future plans, be that reading ideas on certain updates to the game that would make life easier for clans, to reading the latest topic from one of our off-site clans on what more we could do to support them. With continued work on our clan database, supporting our clan leaders through their private forum, and creating events, competitions and features for clans, were extending the most support that weve ever offered. But we wont stop there!

Aside from supporting our ever growing clan community, we have a lot of interesting ideas for clan support in the future. Having direct communication with our off-site clans, supporting our new clans so they have the tools and experience they need to grow, and working on future competition and event ideas are just a few of the areas we have in mind. These are certainly exciting times for clans in the coming year and I look forward to being there to see them alongside all of you!

I have a feeling I should watch the movie "The Birds" by Alfred Hitch[roosters] before the Halloween event. :P

Edit: Censor made me lol.

Actually it's a reference to The Raven.

Why yes, they do seem to get the holiday events. Makes sense to me. Gives them a nice introduction to how things work around Jagex and the chance to explore making content. Holiday events aren't permanent, so they don't have to be done perfectly as they'll only be in the game for a short period of time.

It also, however, explains why many of the holiday events we experience now aren't up to the standards created before.

We already know Halloween is coming. Like every other year. Why don't we get any DDs about unkown future updates? How do DDs replace BTS? Why do we get so many community blogs? Is Jagex/MMG capable of keeping their/his promises? L'anglais n'est-il pas ennuyant ? Isn't all this clan-talk boring? I'm tired of posting questions being given lame diaries that are posted only because there hasn't been one for three weeks and they had to fill the gap. If you don't really want to do it, don't do it.

Wish the old DevBlogs would return. You know, the ones that actually gave us some information rather than "I'm working on something but I can't tell you anything about it for X reason(s).".

Yea, it really was just:

"Hey! Omg I got promoted, and Im now doing halloween. Ye lolz, I know its early, but these things need to be done early. Can't tell you anything though. Kthxbai."

"There are only two strategies in war. Move forward or change. The victor is the first to realise that when he cannot move forward he must change."

WHAT

I mean, the previous Christmas/Halloween/Easter events were pretty elaborate....

Looking back on earlier events, the artwork and amount of time put into each one seems to be increasing if anything! Study the course of events. The reality compared to your rose tinted lens of the past is much different!

(I ain't blowing smoke, I was there during the earlier events too ya know.)

They just have to solve the player density cluster[bleep] problem.

Methinks you are reminiscing about old rewards that can be traded. Are you? ADMIT IT

As for posting Dev Blogs with actual info, I think you all ruined that magic when your expectations exceeded rational limits.

So.. Basically all this tells us is that Mod Raven will be the lead designer behind this years Halloween event, which is going to be in 6/7 months time.. Perfect.

In the mean time i'm going to twiddle my thumbs waiting for the graphics department to hurry the [bleep] up with FTP3..

Considering that it's the *4th* graphical rework I'm sure they're as tired of it as we are of waiting for it. Luckily it's just the graphics for the quest and the one for Zanaris are already done.

Title was great, content was boring. Oh, there will be Halloween this year? Jagex is going to do an event? They never cease to surprise me.

It was many and many a year ago... wait, no, that can't be right.

drop of a scythe (pun intended, and that's not a hint ;)).

That confirms it, it's a hint. They're redropping scythes. Raven said it, so it must be canon!

But seriously folks. If Raven's forum persona is anything to go by, the Halloween event will be fun. For the players that aren't efficiency nuts who want every update to be a level 99 superweapon, that is.

Mmm, I quite agree with you. Mod Raven certainly seems pretty enthusiastic about it all, level-headed enough to sort out the silly suggestions but take in the decent ones from the forums at-least, perhaps he doesn't know what he's getting into? :P

I am looking forward to seeing what he produces, first time in a while I've been intrigued by an event-update actually - kudos to him! :)
