Although i've never driven a car I have to say that I would prefer an automatic, I just feel they would be much easier to use. Instead of fiddling about to try and stick it in the right place you simply slide to the right place and the car does the rest. Its far easier and therfore far safer, infact I think its ridiculous that people expect you to look at the road while struggling to move this fiddly precision instrument.

On the contrary manuals allow the gear stick to change much faster but I don't believe that i'm even going to notice those few milliseconds when it hasn't changed.

I would definitely go for an automatic, they are the best.

[hide]Ugh, the first picture looks all cheap and tacky, this is what most automatics look like.

eh.

alot of us americans are getting lazier

they just dont want to be faced with challenge that requires thinking hard

i mean we have mcdonalds and all that fast food places

alot of people would rather drive then walk or ride a bike to a place thats only a couple miles away

and they dont care about he enviroment most of he time

and that will probably be our downfall

2 other thing

i like having more power in my car

and personally i think our golden years were wen america was made till the 90s

What? Dude your posts make less sense than mine, and thats when I'm trolling...

It's not that difficult with a manual. In the beginning when learning to drive it takes a bit of practice, but doesn't take long until you get it and it goes automatic.

Manual. I've never driven an automatic car and I won't be buying one for my next car. Manual cars take far less fuel over long distances of time.

Also, to whoever said that you have to look at the stick to shift, that's not true. I looked at it for a day or 2 and after 6 years of driving, I have never needed to look at it again, the road get's my attention, never the stick.

Plus manual cars are about ~$1,000 less than automatics here.

This. Before i started learning to drive i thought i'd be constantly looking down trying to change gear but i don't think i ever did. It becomes second nature very quickly.

Especially with a New car, you save something like $5,000 AU here if you choose manual. Which can be used for extras and/or fuel and whatnot.

I own an automatic, but it has a nice little feature, which I conveniently forget the name of, that acts as what I call "fake manual." Basically, you shift the stick to the left (on my car) and then you can shift the gears up and down like a manual, except it'll be nice enough to prevent you from over or under revving. Pretty good compromise if you ask me. Also, for those saying you don't like the lack of power in autos - I can honestly say I've never found a need to downshift gears where just pushing down the pedal wasn't good enough. Not sure where you would have a need like that, unless you're racing.

New question:

Why do people still call stick shifts "standard" when the standard is now obviously automatic.

Depends on where you live. If i had a guess, i would say that if you picked out 100 cars where i live, i would guess about 5 would be auto. It's really unusual here.

If you can only drive an auto - you should not have your licence.

More like: if you can only drive an auto, your licence should say so and therefore you shouldn't be able to drive manual.

The law here in the UK is that if you learn in an automatic you can only drive an automatic (apologies if someone pointed this out before); so pretty much everywhere teaches with manuals unless you're disabled, or specifically ask to learn in an automatic. I get the impression anyway that more people drive manuals here anyway, compared to when I've been on holiday in the US and the hire cars generally seem to be automatics. Idk though, I'm used to driving a manual car and will probably continue to do so.

We have that in Australia, sort of. When you go from your L (Learner) licence to your P1 (Provisional or Red P's as we call it), if you go for the test in auto your only allowed to drive an auto, manual you can drive both. But when you get to P2 (aka green P's - Me) you can drive a manual again. I basically did this because the only car I could get and afford was auto so i didnt have a choice back then even though I can drive manual.

But if you don't know how to drive a manual, it's pretty difficult to pull out onto the highway and get going.

Wait, i don't understand what are you trying to say or at least what has it to do with my post :o :P

I'm just saying that drivers licence should be split into:

1 - automatic cars only

2 - automatic+manual (you would have to take your lessons in a car with manual gearshifting)

Stick shift!

Driving is just too boring when all you have to do is push down that gas pedal. Having to shift just makes it more fun for me. Plus, manuals never shift properly.

Even when I decided I wanted to get a moped I wanted it to have multiple gears, just to be a little more badass :)
