01-Sep-10 - Behind The Scenes - September

Recommended Posts

Romance blossoms during September in a brand new free-to-play quest, coupled with some rather elite achievements for our most experienced of members. If youre not busy planning for the Bonus XP Weekend, why not swat up on your legal drama, as we prepare for the latest batch of court cases?

Court Cases: Back in Session

Its been busy recently at the Seers Village courthouse, with cases closed and wrongs righted by those of you skilled enough to argue, examine and accuse, all while wearing a stylish wig. The court case update will consist of 11 new cases (as mention in the Back in Session blog), each far more fiendish than those released earlier in the year. Interrogate witnesses in the field, use viewing orb magics to investigate crime scenes and discover incriminating fingerprints for yourself as you uncover the truth behind some of our most popular personalities.

Cases once again navigate through a wide range of issues and characters from Barbarians vs. Mages (looking at RuneScape history from two conflicting perspectives), round Evil Dave, past Professor Oddenstein vs. Ernest, and taking a sharp left turn at the Sandwich Lady. Rewards still focus around Attack and Defence XP, but also include a barristers top, and a judges gavel that comes with an appropriately themed emote to let you conduct your own brand of justice.

Bonus XP Weekend

As you know from the newspost last week, were planning a second Bonus XP Weekend to take place from 3-6th September. Were taking a slightly different approach this time, though, so do read the newspost or the Second Helping FAQ blog to learn more about this update. Its a great time to train up those skills youve been neglecting, as well as work on your main attributes, with plenty of time to mix and match between all sorts of content.

Elite Achievement Diaries

The Elite Achievement Diaries update is one we have been discussing in our blogs as early as November last year and, finally, we can talk about the release. We are adding some epically high-level diary tasks to all of the Achievement Diaries, and some new hard tasks to the Lumbridge diary. Requirements include stats as high as 95 Prayer, 96 Fishing, 93 Slayer and 92 Firemaking with an inferno adze.

With new challenges come new rewards, of course, and the elite clothing comes with some useful perks. The highlights are access to a new mining area where theres an NPC who exchanges ores for certs, more Slayer points from Lapalok, High Alch spells for the explorers ring and log chests for the beacon network. Not only that, but there are also improvements to the existing diary rewards AND some huge XP lamps? FTW!

Z-buffering

Improvements to our engine will bring a major graphical improvement to the game in the form of z-buffering. This means you will experience less 'clipping' issues (objects/scenery cutting other objects in half or sticking through each other) and find that scenery 'layers' on top of each other in a more predictable way. This will see improvements to high-paced game content like PKing and allow players to better see the threats around them.

Upon release, the end result will be fewer graphical glitches in software mode and we get faster OpenGL! This also bodes well for the future, as we can now design even more impressive areas and characters, particularly for OpenGL. It also allows us to improve the interaction between players in the future, such as multi-player emotes.

Gunnars Ground

Love is in the air in this months planned quest: Gunnars Ground. What can happen when a dwarf poet is rendered speechless by his love for a Fremennik chieftains daughter? Youll face RuneScapes first poetry composition puzzle and learn about the history of how the Barbarian Village came to be.

This is a brand new quest for the free-to-play game and will be replacing the old Romeo and Juliet quest. As we have often said in the past, were always trying to improve our existing content, but some elements just doesnt age well and is often best removed entirely from the game; we feel thats the case with Romeo and Juliet. Dont worry, though: nobody will lose out on Quest Points or rewards.

In other news...

We also plan to speed up the Shantay Pass, give compost bins the ability to tell you how full they are, increase the clickable area of rope swings and allow you to define the colour of your Clan Chat.

Have fun!

Smelly, you update ninja...

Ores for certs? I started playing after Miles & Co. were retired, this could be intersting.

Shanty pass speed is fine imo, speed up MTK chat and Flying Carpets if you need to, but Shanty's fine the way it is.

Clickboxes on ropes, never really had a problem with them, wish they'd increase clickboxes of Glories in POH

Also, no void quest? =(

give F2P a penny and they want a dime; give P2P a quarter, they want 100,000 dollars, your car, house, boat, social security number, credit card numbers, drivers license, clothes on your back and everything you ever owned or interacted with ever

Not the best month for content, although the Elite Diaries should be nice. Looking forward to Z Buffering and the future things we might see as a result of that!

I'm extremely excited for the upcoming court cases. I got most of my summons via cluescrolls and slayer tasks, but they were a delight. I still have my difficulties with gauging how to present, but that's just my weird self. They were fun, and I can't wait to do more.

This weekend, I plan to scape like there's no tomorrow. Smithing, farming, runecrafting, prayer, and herblore shall fall beneath my mighty and furious clicking! Wahahah!

Reacting impulsively and saying what's on your mind feels oh so good.. for a little, until you realize you just started WWIII.

I am surprised nobody mentioned removing "Romeo and Juliet"? I am curious as to see are they removing the quest entirely, or does it just lose the quest status.

It will more than likely lose its quest status, like Witch's Potion did. Not really a big deal.

Aside from the bonus xp weekend, the elite diaries sound the most interesting. I'd like some experience lamps

I won't like clicking my way to 92 firemaking though...

Hmm, not a particularly interesting month.

Court Cases Batch 2: Bleh, I've become tired of D&Ds.

Bonus XP Weekend Batch 2: I've said this before, I wish Jagex would stop this. It completely cripples processing skills like Farming and Herblore in the run up to it, and I want to play the game how I like.

Elite Achievement Diaries: It's a good idea, nothing wrong with a bit of high-levelled content now and again. Then again, most people won't be able to do any of them, apart from the Hard Lumbridge/Draynor, perhaps.

Z-buffering: I'm glad they're fixing it.

Gunnar's Ground: I think it's a welcome change. Romeo and Juliet was a cheesy and bad quest. The only thing is that there are some recurring elements from it in later quests, such as the Cadava Potion in Dealing with Scabaras, and a thing about ancestry in Defender of Varrock. I guess they'll be woven into Gunnar's Ground, or stripped of Quest status. Are they going to remove Doric's Quest too?

In other news...: Not interesting at all. *chairs you can sit on!*

Where's Dungeoneering Batch 3 gone?

That is what I have presumed, however the wording is quite peculiar, I wonder....

Doesn't look too spectacular, but I'm looking forward to the elite diaries. Some of the rewards sound really good.

Don't look too far into it lol...

[spoiler=News releases for removing crappy f2p quests]

As we have often said in the past, we’re always trying to improve our existing content, but some elements just doesn’t age well and is often best removed entirely from the game; we feel that’s the case with Romeo and Juliet. Don’t worry, though: nobody will lose out on Quest Points or rewards.

As compared to:

These two quests have been made permanently free-to-play to replace Sheep Shearer and Witch’s Potion, which are now no longer classified as quests for anyone, as we no longer feel they’re up to the standard of other quests. Although Sheep Shearer and Witch’s Potion no longer appear in the Quest List, adventurers can still undertake them for their experience and item rewards (by talking to Fred the farmer in Lumbridge or Hetty the witch in Rimmington). Myths of the White Lands and Swept Away will each award either 1 or 2 Quest Points, depending on your progress through Sheep Shearer and Witch’s potion before the update.

There's nothing hidden or strange about it. That's all that's going to happen.
