December 11, 201015 yr Google Spreadsheets is a powerful way to share real-time information in spreadsheet format. Spreadsheets are a good way of recording positions of doors in dungeoneering. Typically a keyer could make an 8x8 spreadsheet and write down key doors in their approximate positions of the doors. It is possible for 5 people to simultaneously edit one spreadsheet document. Therefore, it is theoretically possible for an entire dungeoneering team to be on the same google spreadsheet to record key doors. Would you expect, for perm teams and groups of friends, that Google Spreadsheets would be a powerful way of collectively recording key doors? In addition, it would be easy to share what doors and positions people have gated. This method could make the keyer's duty of having to find doors greatly simpler. In addition, it would be very easy for the keyer to tell a member of the team to run to a door. This method could possibly greatly improve the overall team's ability to run keys, gate doors, and explore the floor during non-GD downtimes. That is, instead of idling or skilling when GD's are not up, people could instead all explore doors at the same time. The major downside of this, of course, would be the fact that editing and maintaining the spreadsheet would be difficult and possibly time-consuming. However, if one is smart about when to record (i.e. while killing monsters in a GD or while running around), the time issue can partly be solved. Moreover, only the important doors and information should be written down. Alt/tab and opening two windows at once is a good way to have both screens visible simultaneously. December 11, 201015 yr Only major issue I see is the one you already addressed about possibly wasting time messing with the sheet midfloor. It would also be harder for the keyer to check than anybody else as he is one who really should never have any downtime.
December 11, 201015 yr Author It would also be harder for the keyer to check than anybody else as he is one who really should never have any downtime. Just put google docs in one window and your RS client in the other. you can have both open simultaneously. alt tab is a quick way of switching screens too. December 11, 201015 yr This might be a nice solution for w117/148 teams but human memory/everyone gates will probably still be faster unless everyone knows the best hotkeys/how to use google docs.

I think this method opens up the potential to all 5 people exploring at the same time. Storing that in one person's memory is almost impossible. Ever wanted to find street prices of RS items? December 11, 201015 yr I think there might be some lag with google doc, but that's not too relevant. Not sure though, we could try it next time our team DGs. I kinda want to push myself to learn to memorize things better. And I think the best way to do that is to just challenge yourself.because regardless of how I look at it, alt tabbing and doing something else will slow you down =\

December 11, 201015 yr I like the idea, however nothing beats open communication through a microphone. It just cannot be beaten, and i fear that if people write a door on the spreadsheet, people won't actually call it in the rs client/screen as, well, they've already "told" you through the sheet. 5 peoples memories should be enough for a perm team to learn the doors, in my experience anyway. December 11, 201015 yr tbh peoople should be exploring dg during nongds and calling doors anyway and if keyer wants to know a specific door its not that hard to ask and one person should know at least in a good team. and as a keyer becomes better it wont be that hard to key on memory but thier are some bad dgs with 15 key doors and the important doors are the ones that will lead to alot or if theirs a non key/skilldoor that needs to be done... idk i was never a fan of keying programs annd eeven with good friends making them sign into google for it is kinda pointless.

December 12, 201015 yr In terms of group organisation, is it just easier for one person to have the designated role of keying the doors? I wouldn't know really, having never properly keyed a large team. This idea sounds great for fighters, but organised chaos for the keyer. No way you can keep track with four other people doing their own thing, read a map, input into the map and key at the same time. It's a great idea otherwise. I usually use the Tip.It planner and keep a skeletal version of the map with very minimal information (key doors, junctions, boss room). If there was anyway the keyer could update this map and other people could see the map updated 'live' on their own monitor, that would be the next step. Again, I wouldn't know how possible that is. But definitely the idea of keeping a map updated live is a great one. | Favourite Game Music | Last.fm | HYT Friend Chat Rules |
December 12, 201015 yr The problem is that in the teams that it's needed for (derp 117ers) it's unlikely ever to be used. In permanent teams, it's very well dealt with already: -The keyer remembers doors for which there is no key-Nonkeyers remember what their gated doors are and keep checking leader's inventory for a key. Tbh, if players don't do the above, they're not going to remember to update the spreadsheet either. Very interesting idea though. 2496 Completionist
December 12, 201015 yr Meh, how about creating a web client/program that allows voice chat, and also allows users to edit a X by X grid? Obviously it would be hardwork, but would sure be damn useful.
December 13, 201015 yr Although it's helpful, I think having spreadsheets like this is overkill... There are already other planners out there to mark keys. And I don't know if the average RSer would even care about tools for dg. I memorize and gate my doors, so maybe it's a different story with others. But yea, you get what I mean. The average RSer doesn't care about efficiency. December 23, 201015 yr Just going to bump this thread with something I've found. www.scriblink.com Check this out - a Real time multi user Paint program. So you create a session & invite up to 5 other people to contribute and view the collective drawing. You can then each draw on the screen. Using a generic square then squiggling in Abbreviation format. ie. OC is Orange Crescent, OCO is Orange Corner and so on. (That everyone understands, can make a reference post somewhere with all abbreviations. H - Home, P-Prayer, etc, etc) Everyone can then Modify this - erase something once it's opened, write something once discovered. Using this teams can devise their own system - ie each player has their own colour on the whiteboard and he/she only marks in the doors they have gated. That way un-gated doors stay the default colour. Might be more practical than a spreadsheet as you just have to do a squiggle with abbreviations and don't have to worry about finding the correct cells. To join the session you must acquire the sessions generated URL. This isn't going to be practical unless you are in a group/clan that has access to chat mediums outside of Runescape. Be it an IRC channel or a Clan website etc. So for instance if a pro DG clan used an IRC channel - where everyone advertises for floors etc, you then find 4 others - you PM them all the link and they join your paint session. This way the team doesn't have to be permanent but a team can be setup relatively quickly (Assuming they know how to use it etc, which would perhaps be a clan requirement) and you are good to go, without having to add countless people on skype etc (not everyone has a mic, nor likes it etc.) Something to perhaps think about, or for someone to mention to these top DG clans if they want to perhaps improve their methods. http://www.[Caution! Jagex Rule Violation].com
December 24, 201015 yr Unless you are going to do a long row of floors, it's too much effort to get it set up for the time it saves. When I key I rarely forget doors or what people gated, and if people don't gate anything in the first place they will probably be too dumb to use it.
December 24, 201015 yr When i key i call every key i get and its other peoples syty to ask me for a key if they gated it. Human memory will always be better.. If some1 made a greasemoney script to work with rs pace that would further improve ur method. However i believe u need to give ur email to others which is considered rule breaking an takes time.
December 24, 201015 yr If I was a DG'er and I had to record all doors, I would make a program that has: 3 options1- small2- medium3- large After that you see all these tiles with connections between them but the connections are all grey.To apply a key to a connection (or no key) You simply click on the connection and then on a key (or no key or what skill the door has) Once a door has a key it will turn into a different color. I would run skype if my team has to give keys. For myself this would be easy to use because I have a set-up with 2 screens. Me and the wise old man go way back.... he was a foolish boy back then. My crystal armour idea.
