Runescape 3?

With the new website showing off very stylish artwork that's animated - i wonder if they are planning Runescape 3?

 

That is going onto making Runescape not only a browser game but also one that you can download for better graphics possibly?

 

Or maybe Jagex may make a spiritual successor to Runescape? As in a totally new game but using same stuff like Runescape. Such as skills, quests, etc. in other words using Runescape as a template.

I doubt there'll be a Rs3, because they still have stellar dawn, transformers mmorpg, and whatever else they're planning 2do.

I'm not sure they'll release a whole new game, but perhaps make a downloadable version of the game we currently have so they can do more with it in the future.

Honestly i don't know why everyone thinks we are in RS2? We are already long past it, for example runescape HD would a whole version, Runetek 5 also and you can go on, so I think we are at least at RS6 or higher already. Just call it Runescape.

Runescape HD was a major graphical update, but it wasn't a whole re-release of the game.

Runetek 5 was jsut a large back end up date, as the 5 suggests the back end engine has had 4 prior incarnations that ended with fairly major changes.

 

The only major re-incarnation the whole game has was rsc > rs2 in which the entire game was re-written from the ground up; literally. Everything the back end, the graphics, audio, quests, skills, maps, interfaces every single last element of the game was completely re-written in an essentially new game.

Until the re-write the entire game from the ground up it won't be rs 3 as its just rs2 with updates strapped on.

There is a line they crossed with trying to make it better, some of those improvements alone would have been nice, but all of them together make it look horrible and are keeping me from playing at the moment.

Sorry to say to you but they have mentioned what I said myself too a few years ago. If you download software (say bittorent) they are not only updating the version number when they rewrite whole the code, even whole OS versions (mac, windows) without the things you said have been updated.

They update version number yes, but they have to do that so our computers know we don't have the latest version.

The version number for rs2 started at 1 (well in the 0s if you count beta), version numbers is not the same thing as this is rs2 this is rs3. Its the version of rs2.

 

Until they rewrite the entire game from the ground up and announced it as rs 3, it is not rs 3.

By your logic a game like the Sims is on like the Sims 25 because each expansion pack constitutes a major update, but it doesn't its still only on the Sims 3; and its another example of version numbers at work. Different expansion packs jump you version number around so the game knows which updates to apply like base Game is 1.xxx, first expansion jumps to 2.xxx etc. Then updates/pathces take each game up a small bit eg 1.04>1.05 while 7.01>7.03

 

And to use you OS examples Windows 7 started on version 1.

Just cause it reaches version 8 or 9 through updates doesn't make it Windows 8 or Windows 9

Sure some do major releases at smaller intervals and retain version numbers eg MAC OSX new releases retain version numbers and general jump like 10.4 > 10.5 and Android does the same, but the key thing is they release them as a new thing & its to do with their buisness model where rather than a full re-write each time (like windows does) they just do modifications to update and streamline their OS, so it s still a version of the original just re-packaged as a new major release. RS3 hasn't been released, so its RS2 version watever we are on now.

While I agree with some parts you say, I still think if a major update happens that changes the code/game dramatically you can call it RS3-4-5 etc. I am talking about things like runescape HD and runetek 5. By your logic Windows has not gone up a number at all after they changed from DOS to what they are now.

I think the problem is that the both the front and back end of the game has been changed slowly week by week with the occasional major update that people don't notice that it's gone through two or three complete rewrites if you compare the current game to the one released as RS2. Yes, I'm pulling the number of what counts as a rewrite out of nowhere, but the point still stands.

 

You can look at RS2 then and RS now and you'll notice almost the same gameplay, but that's also the case if you compare it to RSC. However, if you look at what was required to make the game and the actual graphical engine and it's completely different. Granted, we're never going to be able to compare the code, but if Andrew is still lurking maybe he can chime in with his opinion on how much the game changed coding wise.

New version would mean new engine, and companies barely come with engine news so we wont hear about it until its ready or something.

 

Maybe when they feel that this engine is limiting too much for their groth, but don't see that happening soon.

I don't get it, how was the old website more "medieval"? Web design wasn't really a major defining factor in feudal European history. Historical depictions of medieval web pages are scarce, and those that do exist have their validity often disputed amongst the pre age of enlightenment electronic computer historical scholar community. In fact, I don't think they even had internet back then!

I doubt they will ever release RS3, they will probably continue to update the current game until they reach a limit where they have to make it a downloadable version only. RuneScape has become a lot user-friendly over the years. And with this weeks updates it seems they want to attract a bigger group of gamers, mainly the mainstream. They're trying to keep up with the bigger MMO's. Which I personally don't think is a bad thing. Also the technology they keep putting into the game is far more advanced then it once was. And the game is asking for more resources every day, so there will definitly be a point where it's pointless to keep it a browser game. Whatever they will call it when they release a full stand-alone game is up to them. I'm happy with the recent changes, tho I think they should of had made the blue rightclick-menu transparant like the chatbox! :)

I'd consider the upcoming combat forms to be RS3-like, because they'll make the game virtually unrecognizable from what it once was.
