Dragon Square Out Of Fashion?

Featured Replies

The dragon square shield was one of the, if not the best shield in the game, everybody did Legends quest just to wield it, it was the number one choice for higher level players.

When barrows was released, the dragon sq was still the shield of choice for people who wore the Torags armour, but now it seems the only people who want a dragon square shield, are those who want to complete thier "Full Dragon"

I was browsing the forums last night, and realised nobody wants a dragon square shield anymore, everyone soars after the obsidian shield.

What do you think?

Nothing to do with fasion , it has to do with a copple of things :

1) Dragon sqaure gives + def, Obby shield gives +atk

2) Dragon sqaure requires a long qeust with a lots of reqs. Not good for pures because of def rewards.

3) Dragon shield cost around 3-4 mill. Obby shield around 500-600k.

That the 3 things that make Obby shields more intresting then a SQ.

its the only shield with a strength bonus.

The reason i dont have one or a drag med. is because i feel its a waste of money, who knows when jagex will come out with the kite or large, then they will drop in price, dunno if anyone else feels that way though

swordwarior.png

It's only a waste of money if you pay for it

and as for the strength bonus , i dont value strength bonus as much as we all did in RSC :)

Yeah, the strength bonus on the obsidian shield is just too cool. Everyone wants to hit higher, harder. That 5 point bonus is irressistable.

The obsidian shield is the same stats of the granite shield, plus the strength bonus. Its a little better for range defense, and a little worse for melee defense. Even if I'm melee defending, I still use the obsidian. I haven't used the dragon square since I got it.

A circus in Runescape?? Oh my.

REMEMBER RUNESCAPE KARMA! Be a nice player, and nice things will come back to you.

I'm back, add me if you deleted me. :)

most people will choose obby shield, because for anything better than looks it is definitely better.

Think about the difference... which is that dragon square shield offers +10 defense more than the toktz-ket-xil... considering the strength of most high level players wearing barrows or dragon armor, this is +10 out of around 280-350 total defense bonus... big whoop? It makes a 3% difference (in bonuses).

Now consider the typical whip user (my point is strengthened with almost any other weapon anyway). With climbing boots, berserker, and whatever else, you're topping out around 90-100 strength bonus (little more if you have fire cape). So the +5 strength bonus you get has a larger impact, proportionally, than the +10 defense bonus you lose to get it.

For combat purposes I'd choose toktz-ket-xil over dragon sq any day, although for looks and status, dragon sq is still the way to go (so how vain are ye?)

Proud to have gotten 1800 skill total before access to fishing guild

Why make a house when you can rob one?

yea well quite a while ago i got a left half drop, and i bought right half and made a square, but i always used obby shield instead while training and had the square just sitting in bank- because str bonus is just too good for an extra few def points

118+ combat

1730+ total

85 slayer

95 mage

94 range

D square for the looks, i never liked that obby shield anyways..

they each have attack bonuses and are the only shields with attack bonuses, but no strength bonus.

Maybe it's because the obby shield has the str bonus, so damage is way more noticable than just a few defense points.

No longer playing Runescape, I caught the WoW bug.

Actually, according to the max hit calculator, that extra +5 strength won't always even give you max hit 1 higher, so the strength bonus will often be practically non-existent.

You kidding? It's required for ALL max hits. Maybe it only gives you 1 max hit higher because you're not calculating it with the assumption of 99 strength... makes a big difference

Obsidan shield raises my max hit,so i prefer that :D

23 whip pks,3 dhorka,2 ahrims lvl 119 attack 99 strength 99 and defence 92 plus 94 mage

uh +5 str for me with pot and pray and a good weapon means i hit 1-3 higher with the shield.

with the salve, jeez i dunno +5 more then i normally hit im not sure.

I have all the shields, like many others do, and I always always use Obsidian when training, along with climbers and fury with torags armor and whip. Makes for nice hits. With a high def level and high armor def, I gladly trade 10 def points for +5 str bonus.

Then there is the fashion conscious. Reminds me of when I see ppl wearing blk cavaliers while training...um...why? Ya you look "cool", but I want to kill as many as possible in as little time as possible. So i wear whatever is going to kill the fastest, regardlesss of looks. Maybe thats why I "train smarter, not harder"..and made 123 in 12 months....meh.

I used to use obsidian, but when I got rich enough to switch my torag for verac, I needed all the extra def bonus I got while training (with whip and shield), so d square for lyph3

Classic bloodveld for lyph3! Although I do like the new ones.

BUT! I may be back! Add my new account, Dr Bloodveld!

That's a very good point, and it isn't even taking into account the +10 ranged bonus the toktz-ket-xil has. Toktz-ket-xil FTW! :D

...And BTW, as a side note; in terms of fashion, I would take Toktz-ket-xil anyday over D square. It looks a lot cooler with my abbysal whip than D square ever could.

They need to make the dragon square also protect against dragon fire. Then maybe it would be worth having.

because we would all take it to greens...

i got an obby shield :D and i like it!, after i do the legands quest and get the left half, i might use it. But i will always use my obby shield for looks 8)

I sold my dragon square which I had had for more than a year a few months ago, not only because of the obsidian shield's strength bonus, but I just think it looks better with the abyssal whip as well. Large shields with whip just look clumsy IMO.
