20-Aug-2013 - Divination

Featured Replies

The xp is low, the skill is boring, the skill is unimaginative...

For me, the skill doesn't have any depth at all. Nothing says that I still have awesome things to discover after doing the first 37 levels. From here on, it's all going to be the same - actually, from level 10 on, it's all going to be the same.

Also I don't have a clue what I'm actually doing. For the current non-real life skills I can sort of imagine how the training method is relevant to the skill: I can understand Slayer, Dungeoneering, even Runecrafting (though span kinda dented that). For Divination, I don't feel like my character is learning anything. I'm just moving to a different place each time and repeating what I did before. I'm not unlocking new training methods - to all the people who said Dungeoneering isn't a skill because you train it in one place - here's Divination.

At least skills like fishing have different tools, different fish you can catch for different mixes of afk/gp/xp/apm. You can use SC harpoons, C2 fishing, FOG gloves, urns, familiars, Flingers, the fishing outfit - lots of things you can bother with (or not). Divination is always, at every level, 100% the same as the level before. I don't mind that in a skill like prayer, because it's fast, but for a skill like Divination, which is the slowest in the game, it's killing.

Basically, the Divination release feels like they released a training method, rather than a skill. This should've been a way to train magic, runecrafting, summoning and your lowest skill (hi Guthix) all at once, but Jagex just really wanted a new skill - and they had no more material. It seems to me there is just very little content in this skill. Even if you allow for the fact that the previous release was far better than average, it should measure up to Dungeoneering better.

P.S. At least up to level 40, the hunter xp/h is way higher than the Divination xp/h. Possibly at higher levels as well. This for the most efficient way to train the skill.

I am holding off on saying it's too slow until people get closer or to 99 so we can see the total average exp over the whole skill.

Personally I think a good 1-99 time would be 250 hours, making an all around average of 52k exp/h. More or less in line with the other gathering skills using "conventional" methods.

I thought they said this skill would be full of lore or something.

I find this skill very underwhelming for a skill that was supposed to be rich in lore and directly connected to guthix's death.

@OrTradeMe:

"Conventional"? Are we going to get the old 'only noob methods count for balance purposes' thing again?

The conventional method of training woodcutting is over 100k xp/h past level 90.

The conventional method of training mining is >80k xp/h past level 80ish.

The conventional method of training fishing: over 60k/h easily, more with Flingers. Over 100k/h with C2.

The conventional method of training hunter: over 200k/h easily.

The conventional method of training farming: over 100k xp/h just for torstol herb runs, tree runs are still a lot higher.

That's not even counting effigies, D&Ds and bonus xp. So gathering skills are about 100k xp/h, on average, past level 80-85. The last ~10m xp takes ~100 hours. Are you saying the first ~3m xp should take ~150 hours? I think the xp/level balance should be changed before we get such a radical shift to low-levelled content.

I meant in terms of training gathering skills by actually gathering something rather than say ivy where you get nothing in return.

We never asked for an old school skill - Jagex just decided to give us one.

Also there is a middle ground between xp rates many deem to high (eg warbands) and xp rates that are just too dam low eg 10xp an action for lvl 40-50

I have to ask again why we think mastering one skill should take as long as 5 JRPGs.

MMORPG no point in subscribing if you can "finish" Runescape in 100 hours.

With love to one, friendship to many, and good will to all.

I have to ask again why we think mastering one skill should take as long as 5 JRPGs.

It's because RuneScape is subscription-based. If you just had to pay a flat fee for unlimited RS, the total time investment required to "complete" the game would be cut down to like 1000 hours max.

The game would probably be a lot more fun and exciting if that were the case, but I digress...

I would like to think that they will have more inclusion of divination in other events and quests. Divination does certain have a lot of potential as a skill to use with other skills though, but it needs to be implemented.

Is it me or does this skill feel quite graphically lazy?

All the wisps, springs and craters look the same.

Couldn't the wisps/springs of been in keeping with the energy they give? Even just a recolour to match their energy would be nice.

Could the craters not of varied a little bit from place to place?

The speed of the skill is perfect. Although I doubt Jagex did this for balance purposes - they probably just wanted to encourage people to buy spins.

I would have liked a little more variation in training methods however, as well as some high apm high reward methods which aren't bug abuse.

You can't get div xp from spins. Nice theory, though. I thought the cynicism made it extra smart.

I didn't say you could yet anywhere in my post. Reading things more carefully avoids looking stupid. Only for the first few weeks. Most of the recent maxers have never trained a skill anywhere close to this slow, so as soon as the ban on sof is released, the metaphorical dam will burst ;)

I agree, the graphics are near identical at each place. I cant see why this was so heavily delayed other than because RS3 was delayed. If you compare the amount of graphical work in this ,compared to with Runespan its minute

Can't load jagex wiki cause they still aint fixed that issue.

And really changes so minor you can not even notice them when your there for hours? That's kinda lame I mean come on how hard is it to make the ones giving you yellow stuff yellow?

You get some lore as well when depositing them - like small Guthix quotes.

>New skill will be rich in lore

>Get fortune cookie phrases instead

Ah – so *that* explains why one of the phrases I got was: “Help! I am being held hostage in a computer gaming programmers facility …”

nyuseg.png

I was able to notice the difference, but I was looking for it in particular so I don't blame you. The difference is a bit easier to see once you hit the Tier 4 node at level 30 and can see the first orbital layer, since before that its purely size and intensity.

Here's a sloppy made picture I just put together detailing all of the Wisp types. You can see the differences in orbitals and intensity between the levels. (With the Enriched nodes tending to get a lower central orb) The upper ones start looking more and more like the Divination logo :P

The Fallen Diviner

At first glance I see a lot of potential lore going around divination, but not necessarily being explicitly using it. On that note I can also see how they seem the concept of many summoning familiars and their uses and thinking: lets make things kind of nifty things, but mostly for skilling benefits, into passive worn items. I think they have something interesting here, but on batch 2 they need some ingenuity.

A good D&D that randomly spawns at colonies that offer higher chances on the better wisps being collected would be nice.

Also signs for summoning would be cool as well. Would be nice to have something like: 10 green, 25 energy = familiar special reduced by 10% usage; 10 blue, 25 energy = familiar hits for 1.5x more...

It's just disappointing how the first thing that goes through most of your heads' is "wow Jagex being greedy with the spins again amirite" when you see an update (so every single week).

I'm pretty much done with these forums. I feel cloistered by negativity and I get the feeling a good 50% of you don't even play this game anymore.
