There currently is a new exhibition showing in a few big cities. And it's called BODIES. It's an exhibition that shows you dissected bodies, real bodies to display the human body, you can see all the veins, you can look at how your muscles work and what makes them work. Everything is dissected, from a spine, to a man that's in a possition like he's playing football (soccer) with all his muscles cut loose at one part and folded into the air that you can see all his muscle layers, the smokers lungs, and even a room with fetesus in the different stadia (from week three to 32 if I remember correctly).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Now there has been quite some contreversy about this exhibition lately. Especially due to where the bodies are from. As in not being donated. But unclaimed chinese bodies.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

So, has anybody seen this exhibition, or the similar exhibition Body Worlds? What did you think of it, what do you think of it's controverse?

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I've seen the exhibition myself last saturday. And I thought it was quite interesting, and really good looking as well. However I did have some mixed feelings on how the bodies came there. These people never gave like, what's the word, permission to use their bodies. They were unclaimed, and science just, well, used them. It's a bit 'wrong' I think, I however did enjoy the exhibition.

ive been to the exhibition in stuttgart and frankfurt and it is very interesting. remember the horse?

i remember the discussions a newspaper brough up about using chinese bodies that died by execution or getting bodies from a hospital in kirghistan.

 

 

 

as far as i remeber they investigated that case. dont know how far they came and van Hagen himself seems a little bit creepy to me. :anxious:

I don't know how many of you live in Vancouver but Science World has an exhibit. I went to it a couple weeks ago and it was definitely the most interesting thing I've seen in a while. The bodies displayed at the exhibit weren't creepy but thinking about the guy preparing these bodies, cutting them up, posing them etc. Other than that, it's definitely a must see!

Yea, it was really special. I'm still amazed how they dissected all the vains. Only vains, nothing else. To those who haven't seen and have the chance to see it, I'd deffinitly go!

It looks amazing, wish I could go see one. I suppose it does make you wonder where they got the bodies from...

I think it's a great exhibition, most people will probably learn from it, and as for the bodies, I dont' really care. Probably disrespectful in many people's opinions but to be honest, they're bodies, not souls, and they're dead anyway. When I die people can do what they want with my body, I won't need it or care about it anymore.

There's a BodyWorks at Science World here in Vancouver, and it's very similar - they posed cadavers, and then peeled the skin off. It's really, really cool.

Kinda creepy... They are REAL bodies, not any plastic stuff. Like, I see dead people - cut into pieces.

They don't smell because they have been plastinised. Plastination is the process by which all the moisture is removed (using acetone) and replaced with a polymer which is then hardened. Pretty much modern mummification - it is a VERY long process though, I read that the horse and rider plastinate took 3.5 years to make.

So your saying that the face is what makes them humans? I think thats one of the targets of the exhibit, to show that this is us, and what we look like. WE are humans.

Pretty cool exibt, I wonder how textbookly acurate it is. I'm in human anatomy at my college right now, our lab consists of teams of 5 people dissencting an entire human body over 12 weeks. It's pretty wierd making the first cuts but after that you get used to it. Anyway I wonder how it stacks up to these public shows?

No, its different then that. When disecting cadavers (dead bodies), whether it be in a class or when police do it for forensic studies, the face is covered whenever possbile. Whenever you're working on the legs, chest, or other part of the body, you have the fave covered with a towel. Its an tradition that dates back thousands of years, unless you know the person (i.e. a funeral) you aren't suposed to expose the face.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Even my brother, a 3rd year medical student, rarly disects the faces of cadavers. You just don't.

When you go there you can have an audio guide - there are two available; layman's and medical. I'd imagine the medical one would go into a lot of detail, considering they bothered to make a special one just for laymen.

Called Body Worlds over here. I went to see it. I didn't really think it was science. More of an art.
