Chinchompa Analysis

I got 66 hunter today, so after getting a spottier cape I decided to try out using all the chinchompas. I did some tests to see how they compare to the standard bows.

There are two types of chinchompas. Normal chinchompas, which are light brown, require level 53 hunter to catch. Carnivorous chinchompas, which are red, require level 63 hunter to catch and when caught they are called "red chinchompas." Both are ranged weapons.

Chinchompas have some unique characteristics. They are one-handed, while the magic shortbow is two-handed. They have new attack styles: short fuse, medium fuse, and long fuse. You have to adjust the attack style based on how far you are from the target: short fuse for a short distance, and so on.

I did a test of about 150 attacks on lesser demons to see how much these attack styles matter. I have level 79 ranged. I was hitting the demons from 2 squares away. When I used the "short fuse" style, I hit an average of 3.8 damage per attack. On "long fuse" I hit an average of 1.5 damage per attack. These numbers include the zeros I hit. Thus it looks like you are over twice as accurate when you use the proper attack style. I doubt the attack style affects the amount of damage you do when you do manage to get a hit.

Also, the chinchompas can hit multiple targets in one attack. They hit a 3x3 square like the ancient magic burst and barrage spells.

Here are some comparisons between the chinchompas and standard ranged weapons:

Accuracy (ranged bonus):

-Normal chinchompas: +45 ranged

-Red chinchompas: +70 ranged

-Yew shortbow: +47 ranged

-Magic shortbow: +69 ranged

Speed (estimated from a quick test):

-Chinchompas: about 25 attacks per minute

-Magic shortbow on accurate: about 25 attacks per minute

-Magic shortbow: about 35 attacks per minute

Power

I have hit a 13 with a red chinchompa. Tveryone else seems to be getting higher hits, however.

Conclusion:

-Normal chinchompas are like one-handed yew shortbows on accurate mode with the exception that they have a 3x3 area attack. Not sure what arrow they're equivalent to.

-Red chinchompas are like one-handed magic shortbows on accurate mode with the exception that they have a 3x3 area attack. Not sure what arrows they're equivalent to.

Reaction:

I'm somewhat disappointed with the chinchompas: they seem pretty useless as weapons. They're much slower and much weaker than the magic shortbow, and they require you to adjust the attack style to the distance you are attacking from. The only way they are better than the standard bow is with their area attack, which isn't all that useful.

There are some uses for chinchompas in multicombat situations. In pest control, they are extremely useful both for training and for distracting spinners. You can get xp surprisingly quickly by hitting the large piles of monsters with chinchompas. They can also be used for decent xp at the lighthouse dagannoths (perhaps in conjunction with a cannon).

The multicombat ability allows faster xp, doesn't it? In PC you will always be able to meet 9 monsters in a 3x3 area. Assuming you get roughly 20 hits a minute with the chinchompas, hitting 9 x 5 (average hit) = 45 every hit. That's 4 x 45 = 180 xp a hit, 3.6K xp a minute, and ~200K an hour.

Only problem is in PC, if you're truly looking for fast exp, you'll be in a PC group. That means games that last under a minute at their best, and typically few extra monsters to kill.

I suppose if you're just a regular PCer it would be a great weapon to have.

I was able to hit an 18 against a group of 4: 9, 11, 18, 10 damage respectively. Combined with an ancient mage, we made short work of them. They are excellent support weapons.

I also realized they're pretty worth less, I maxed out about 4 on a dark wizard, I did more damage kicking than with 10 chinchompas (red ones too).

However I did have a low (around 90) ranged bonus as I only had a defender as well.

I was very suprized at the usefulness of salamanders however, I managed to hit quite a few 15's on all 3 modes on market guards.

exactly my thoughts...

i can hit a 17 with the red ones at 73 ranged, and the splash damage, plus being one handed is very unique

I used both grey and red ones in cw, and the red ones definitely hit higher.

I only couldnt find the exact caps between short, mid and long range (how many blocks distance before using other style)

Before jumping to conclusions that these chenchompas are useless(what i dont think), we need some more testing on all styles with different rangelvls in different situations..

Reds are pretty easy to get, they hit around 25 damage, multi-target attack, sast throw rate.

So a lot of people have said they've hit much higher than I did during my tests. I maxed out at 9 damage on lessers with both types of chinchompas during my test of a couple hundred attacks. This confuses me -- if I could have hit higher you'd think I would have done so at some point during my trial. I used the short ranged style for most of it. Maybe other styles have different max hits? I suppose if that's the case they could also have different speeds. I'll have to try it out.

1)Where do you think I got my facts?! I'm not passing on hearsay. I'm reporting the data I collected myself from the chinchompas I caught myself.

2)OK, you have a lot of chinchompas. Congratulations. While I was catching chinchompas I did some calculations and I was getting xp at about 50k per hour at the red chinchompas. That's less than 200 chinchompas per hour. Catching 6000 chinchompas would take over 30 hours of hunting. You could use them up in 4 hours. From these numbers I'd estimate that every hour spent continually using red chinchompas takes 8 hours of hunting. When compared to, say, making iron arrows, that's a long time preparing your ammunition for a short time using it. I'm predicting from this that chinchompas will be relatively expensive (comparable to rune arrows), or not bought and sold much, or both.

3)This isn't a guide. Read the title; it's "Chinchompa Analysis," not "Everything you need to know about chinchompas." I'm just reporting the results of my tests.

I'm planning to try out using red chinchompas at the lighthouse dagannoths and seeing how they work as training weapons. Perhaps I'll also be able to figure out the difference between my low hits in my previous tests and others' reports of much higher hits.

The chimchompa's are A LOT better than you think they are.

First, as I believe someone already mentioned, they work wonderfully in pest control.

Void knight down to 40 hp, purple portal still at 250 with spinners everywhere. I threw 6-7 chimchompas in, and the portal was dead with in seconds.

Another use that I thought of, but haven't yet tested, is training. Lighthouse dagganoths, with a cannon and 10k chimchompas. Throw them with a medium or short fuse into tight formations and just watch your XP grow.

Last thing... I don't know why your max hit values are so low. Some random guy gave my brother ONE red chimchompa. My brother accidentally tossed it at a guard and hit a 21 and he's 84 range... at least he claims it was an accident. He may have potted up and turned on prayer, I'm not sure.

Did some little tests of my own while i got away from hunting:

i withdrew 1k chinchompas, my best range gear(snake boots and archer helm, no ring) and went to Pest control. i decided to do 10 games and look at the experiance gained and chompas used.(red chinchompas)

the results were pleasing: in 10 PC games i gained 40k ranged experiance and used up 396 red chinchompas, note that it wasnt a fast server, we had one loss and at the rate i could have done about 35 games an hour. The max hit i saw was 21 but im sure i could have hit more. that is about 140+ PC points ranged xp an hour, and with the points its about 200k ranged xp an hour with 99 ranged. I am very pleased with the results knowing that max ranged xp an hour at daggas is about 140k.

I've just been trying out chinchompas at pest control as well. I found it's easy to get 1-3k ranged experience per game on the side (several points worth!): just start tossing chinchompas when you see large piles of monsters.

I'm not sure why my previous max hit was so low. In any case, I saw myself hit a 13 for sure with a red chinchompa, and it's possible I could hit higher. I'll edit the first post with my new information.

For now I'm hunting more chinchompas, as I've used all mine up.
