What is it with...? *Title too long*

What is it with the male 'and female' preoccupation with weaponry and guns, and the likes of battling and killing?

I'm not in any way saying it's bad, and nor am I talking specifically about Runescape. But, especially in younger male children, I tend to find a preoccupation with things like weaponry, wars, fighting, guns, the list goes on.

So to make this short, I want to discuss this preoccupation, pertaining to people of any age, and either sex, and also focusing on where it's seen most.

Exactly! Like young kids who pull legs of spiders and such. And addiction to games like Grand Theft Auto, so many people love those, they find it amusing (eventhough I do) it's wierd.

I think they find a pleasure in it .. and I have no idea maybe people find it interesting.

All animals fight each other (as in, within the species). It could be for territory, it could be for mates - it is 100% natural.

This was in reference to the young people doing it. When you are youngest, innate traits are more prevalent.

Wouldn't you want a steady supply of soldiers for your future armed forces?

Look at the little angels... They think war is fun!

Apparently thinking guns and fighting are cool makes you cool. At least to my knowledge. Same with swearing.

With 9/11, the war in Iraq and all the other violence going on in the world, little kids are finding out about it. And when their friends think it's cool, they think it's cool. The chain goes on...

Hey there's nothing wrong with growing up playing cowboys or James Bond or any of that. It's all harmless fun at a young age when children should be encouraged to use their imaginations, even if it's with guns. It doesn't mean they'll all grow up to be dangerous gunmen or something.

Did I ever say it was? I watch a lot of crime shows myself, and guess what? There's a lot of gunfire and violence. Most of those kids will grow up and grow out of it, but some will do as best as they can. If they can't get their hands on a gun, they might be able to do as well with a knife or even their bare hands. It's harmless at a young age, but at the teenage and up age, it might not be harmless to some people.

Around 2000 b.C. there's a significant shift in the role of martiality in primitive culture, which is reflected in the change in shape of certain tools and the inclusion of weapons. From that point on, the warrior has always held a central role in society. Four thousand years later we're still stuck in that same pattern, and it doesn't look like we'll ever get out of it.

That isn't relevant to their playing with guns. When I was a child I played with guns long before I knew about the gulf war, long before I'd seen any war footage on TV and long before I knew about any real conflicts.

You come off as extremely over-sensitive.

That's human nature. Human is animal afterall (No, I don't want to start an argument about that statement, just had one at school)

I like looking at them because they are just fun to look at. I don't care to much for looking at cars, so this is like my looking at cars. I still don't know the models, but I enjoy looking at them anyway.

When we go to museums, guns and medieval sections are my favorite parts :P Even though I've never fired a gun other than a laser gun at laser tag in my life.

Good point. I strangely remember when I was 5 or something, when the US wasn't involved in a war, water guns and toy guns were really popular. I have never found guns and violence cool and fun, but if you do, that's fine. Just don't take it a little too far.

Children of that age can't, they can't get hold of real guns or airguns unless their parents give them to them - passing the responsibility onto the parent.

When one gets older it is just like any other obsession - its unhealthy to be obsessed. People who are obsessed with guns aren't 'cool' in general society. They may be considered cool within the guns society, but the same can be said for anyone who's obsessed with anything in their own society.

I disagree. It is perfectly fine to be obsessed with something to a certain point.

For all you know, that "certain point" is what Anesthesia is talking about.

It's possible, but he didn't state it that way. He said it's unhealthy to be obsessed, not within a certain point.
