Very interesting, is neat how you affected the market that way.

His banning i couldn't care less about, i am apathetic on people that sell GP.

What I was remarking on was his half wine and white party hat manipulations. Though not illegal on Runescape by any means, it certainly is illegal if attempted in real life.

Not only does r2-pleasent have a broken moral compass, he:

1) in no way deserves respect for being able to manipulate prices in a game filled with naive youngsters

2) Would most definitely get eaten alive in the real world, where people are smarter, more ruthless, and things like this are most definitely illegal (possibly explaining why he spent so much time on runescape instead of something actually productive)

3) Is only posting this because he wants yet more throngs of people heralding the ground he walks on.

Your escapades are nothing more than an unimpressive (though interesting) anecdote.

i honestly agree with you 200% you couldnt have said it any better then what was going through my mind while reading his story

Not to reopen the debate or anything...

1. Was it not you who said the real world is ruthless?

2. But you cannot apply real-world ethics to a game (well to some extent you can). There was no Runescape rule against it; therefore, it is completely legit.

3. I see no proof of your claim.

Isn't the whole point of this interest? People envy his intelligence. Not saying he is anything more than another Runescape player though.

Very interesting read! You influenced the market greatly!

That would be hard to do now-a-days because of all the rare sellers. You would have to make MASS groups of people to stop selling rares to drive up prices. It would take mass co-operation!

Sorry to hear you got banned.

Training my pure!

So...rare prices aren't always all about the rarity of the item...

Rs2pleasant, if someone/a big group of people had the money, would it be possible to "manipulate" the prices of some discontinued item today, or would the community be too big for it?

Rs2pleasant, if someone/a big group of people had the money, would it be possible to "manipulate" the prices of some discontinued item today, or would the community be too big for it?

I was executing price raises / drops right up until the time of my banning just about. Around March of 2006, I would message my friend Gdec Goat, who had 2 Phat Sets or so, whenever I planned to drop the prices. I'd find a morning where Party Hats weren't selling very well, and the only people buying on forums were those paying in Party Hats + Cash (for example they're buying Red for Yellow + cash, upgrading their Phat sort of thing).

I would then post on forums that I was selling my Party Hats off FAST!! An example of the title would be ":+: SELLING PHATS CHEAP :+:". Now, technically, yes, you're not supposed to say "Cheap" in the title, but they were actually cheap. Also it looks a bit desperate, which is what I want people to think. I'd sell off my first Phat Set, then I'd tell Gdec Goat to sell his Phat Set(s) off. He'd do the same, and he'd sell them at whatever price I told him to (within reason), to help further lower Party Hat prices. We also made sure to request "CASH ONLY", since we'd need cash to buy the Phats back (and we were in effect temporarily raising the price of GP in comparison to Party Hats).

By the time Gdec and myself had sold off 2-3 of our Phat sets combined, the market would be in a tailspin. People would be undercutting us, and trying to steal sales, which was exactly what we wanted. Sometimes we could drop Phat prices as low as 10-15% within one morning. But, the drop was extremely elastic, and bounced right back up once they hit a certain price. I'd begin buying right when prices looked their worst, buying back the Phats I sold at a 10% discount. Gdec did the same, and by the end of the day Party Hat prices would be exactly as they were at the beginning of the day. It was an interesting Merchanting tactic that provided huge profits, and was very fun to execute.

So to answer your question, I'd say yes, players could in-fact pull this off today. HOWEVER, the Party Hat merchanting community has actually dwindled over the past few years, and the only reason it might NOT work is because the population trading is, believe it or not, too small. The more action there is on the market, the further you can push the prices.

  • 8 months later...

Good read and good story, but I would like to clarify on one thing.

You mentioned unleash1 and me in your post, but to take that a bit further, unleash and I were partners and we trusted each other to the point that unleash would give me every single rare he had, so that I could show them off :) Later on, when summer trees joined in and gave me 10 more blues on top of what I already had, the illusion became much greater. I belive there are still screen shots of a trade screen with 3 crackers, 20 some blues, and few sets:)

Unleash1 and I were the first 2 mercahnts to start the manipulation process. We would publicaly start buying out every single party hat of a given color, lets say red. With our combined wealth we could buy about 10-20 each. That in turn would create an artificial demand and the price was approaching peak we would start selling off some reds to all those people who now wanted one. By the time we were done "unloading" the price would collapse and the party hat that we manipulated was worth even less than when we started. At that point we would buy a few of them at good prices and store for future manipulation, rinse and repeat.

The greatest manipulation of all times was when me, unleash1, and summer trees bought out about 30 blues and caused the price to double and later to collapse, the profit that we made from that was unreal :)

Another cool thing was all those people who used to pay me a lot of money just to know which color party hat we were going to push next in order to stock up ahead of time.

Then I quit to play world of warcraft, taking my 4 party hat sets with me. However, I came back last month and have every intention of merchanting party hats again when I find a good partner (ofcourse, noone will ever measure up to unleash in my eyes :( ).

Sorry to hijack your thread, just wanted to add that :)

EDIT- just realized this thread is 8 monts old. To whoever asked above me- he was banned from these forums for breaking Jagex rules, I expect. Price manipulation is against the rules of the game.

Of course its a personal attack, and I *obviously* don't agree on whether it was uncalled for- I don't recall anyone posting on the forum to ask why the half wine jump occurred

I don't recall anyone asking you to post your opinion, either. It's a public forum, and this is a relevant post.

You post your story in the general forum, but then say "your opinion was not called for"? :-k

It was a nice story, but I agree with everything chris has said. Price manipulation is wrong, through what ever means you do it.

I am not a skiller, but i do some skills.
