  1. Got your back, darkrick. Locked.
  2. I ask these "random strangers" for an UNBIASED opinion. Any family member would say ask her just for the sake of it being "cute" Yeah, his parents may have suceeded but things have changed since their dating times. Well yeah, some dating customs change. Let's see... I'm just over 30, but I agree that you should go ahead and ask her in person. Compare notes here and with those you trust if you need to, but I think you're good to go.
  3. Trying to explain my experience would be like trying to explain to someone how salt tastes if they've never tasted it.
  4. Thread cleaned for spam and offensive language. Using offensive language to state what Jagex does or does not block (i.e., what they consider offensive or should consider offensive) is not tolerated.
  5. More so because quite a few 'dads' and 'moms' play.
  6. This is in the wrong forum anyway. Please re-post in Help & Advice.
  7. Thread cleaned and moved by me. Please do me and the rest of the Tip.It mods a favor-- don't spam with things like 'wrong forum', 'lock this', etc. Please pm me or another mod if you have concerns about a thread. Anyway... please continue...
  8. I went ahead and moved it.
  9. Don't believe everything you read. I would highly recommend any who have not read this to do so... very, very carefully. This person speaks from experience. I think there is no question that Jagex needs better customer support, and that Andrew, Paul, and much of the main staff are more programmers/coders/etc. than seasoned businessmen-- therefore, the company may need some management restructuring. One of their biggest obstacles is that you must live in Cambridge to work there, I think, at least in the sense that many would-be applicants are not in a position to move there. Can someone remind me why work is restricted to Cambridge? Something about security?
  10. I'm sure it has something to do with bandwidth.
  11. I'm a bit biased because I write poetry almost purely in free verse (I play to my strengths), but I agree.
  12. I can speak to some of that. re: sexual harassment, my wife (who plays RS) was propositioned by a supposedly college-age male player. He didn't stop when she told him she was married. *No one* deserves that sort of harassment. re: tiara and clothes-- Well, I tried out being female for a while after Recruitment Drive. There is definitely more clothing options for female characters. I didn't like wearing berserker or (even more) warrior helms on a female character, however. And yes, tiaras look better on females. Obviously a bit of Jagex humor :) I had a female friend who thought the idea of me playing a female character was hilarious-- even teased me good-naturedly. Admittedly, I also had a laugh with some of my friends with the undue attention I got; I got a little twisted amusement out of people that treated me differently. And then the day came that I got really harassed. Again, I think no one deserves that sort of treatment.
  13. Runescape's grown, so I don't see why there can't be more homeworlds... I'll get back to you on this.
  14. A lot of the stories I've heard make a lot more sense :)
  15. Please note that topics like this have been done in the past, although it may have been a while since the last one.
  16. Indeed. AD&D came out when I was very little. (I'm 31.) I married into a gamer family. My in-laws used to play D&D and all that, so my wife cut her teeth on gaming very early. (She'll be 37 Monday.) Wargaming stuff has been around for a very long time (AD&D was influenced by it) and your Warhammer stuff is based on those old games. I don't find it surprising that the original working title for the RS alpha was 'DeviousMUD'. I used to play the old text MUDs before 'graphical interface MUDs' came out, most notably Everquest (and yes, that's what MMORPGs used to be called). A lot of us are just continuing old childhood hobbies. Mostly, it's just a way to kick back and relax after a day of work. My parents don't game, but I suspect that my wife, myself, and my sister (and brother-in-law) will be gaming for a while just to keep ourselves entertained. It's a lot better than being glued to the 'idiot box'!
  17. Except that would be Very Bad because tip.it relies on advertising revenue to survive, remember? How would the advertising company know anyway? So in other words just keep it a small secret. They record how many times the ads are loaded and how many times they're clicked on. The higher these numbers, the more Tip.it gets paid. You are correct. Blocking Flash, ActiveX, and popups are probably more efficient to keep revenue coming but avoiding security risks. Probably a good approach Also correct. We keep an eye on suspicious links, censoring some that are known to be unsafe or generally against the rules here, and watch for any bad ads that might slip through, taking care of them ASAP.
  18. Sometimes the ignore list must be your friend. You did the right thing.
  19. Some screenshots would definitely be cool as I am sure I haven't played that far back.
  20. My fansite preference will always be tip.it (obviously), but I have noticed that many fansites in general have carved out niches for themselves. I've found helpful and interesting information on one fansite that wasn't on another. Ultimately though, I think the fansites will be about their community aspect, as was said earlier. I agree that the Knowledge Base was likely created to improve their Customer Support-- at least cut down on their query load a bit.
  21. Indeed. For some of us adult gamers, this is just another extension of stuff we've done for years, whether it be rolling the multisided die, playing online, LARP, etc. I played MUDs for about 6 years in college, about up to the time Everquest first was released. MMORPGs were just a new name for graphical MUDs.
  22. I remember getting bored during my F2P days. After getting members, I still got bored but not as often. Solution: give members a spin. F2P for me was before the majority of new random events. Not sure how I'd view them if I remained F2P, except I like dandy new duds.
  23. If you use Firefox with the Adblock extension, you don't even have to see any ads that would be suspicious.
  24. I like this sentiment. I'll give my perspective on a real-life comparison real quick, and then get back to this. I've never quite understood the collect for investment mentality. For example: Comics? I'd rather just read 'em. Coins? Well now, a full collection of the state quarters plated in gold would look really cool for a while, but they wouldn't have much practical use. It's probably a bad example, but I can't see collecting much of anything because they look cool and might net some cash later. The stock market I understand a little better. It's ultimately a gamble on the fortunes of particular companies that are on the exchange; but it is an investment in capital. Back to rares: The most sought-after rares are items that can actually be worn, to show off your wealth. I like wearing fancy clothes. I once collected as many non-stat boosting clothes that I could and took so many screenies of the combinations thereof that at least one of my friends that saw them thought I had tons of clothes in my bank. I plan on entering the H1P best-dressed contest. But I generally don't have any interest in collecting some clothing items for investment or to specifically show them off. That said, I like treasure trail items, but I just wear 'em for fun.
  25. I don't remember really begging per se at all. When I first started (Feb '02), someone very kindly made me a set of bronze eq. I think I might have asked a few times for replacements when I died, but I think I eventually got on my feet after a while. I think the game was still small enough then that there wasn't a high number of beggars. The game has grown several times over since then, been more widely advertised, and more people are playing. But I do remember turning all chat off in rs1 for a while because things were bad, so it's not a new thing.
