  1. Try tools -> options -> advanced -> general ->accessibility. Ensure "Search for text when I start typing" is unchecked. This should not occur when you are typing in a web form, if it is, something is up.. could be some advert stealing focus from the form or something.. I'm not sure. What version of Firefox are you using?
  2. As cruiser said, people leave IRC open in case anyone wants to leave a message for them while they are away, or in case something is discussed that they want to read/know about. People log the channel and read/scan scrollback at their leisure. This is a public channel - anyone can join, anyone can log it. People can post the logs on their website if they so choose... I don't see the problem with someone "spying" on a public channel - it's public! It's like disallowing reading posts by people who haven't posted in the last 12 hours, since they're clearly only here to "spy" on others. Some people just don't have reason/inclination to talk. I'm guessing by some staffers' responses that in the past some undesirable hung around in the channel, didn't say anything, and collected someone's phone number when they stupidly wrote it in the channel, or something similar. How is disallowing idling really going to prevent this?
  3. Not that I know of.. I'm pretty sure you could write an extension to do it for you, but I don't know of one.
  4. Sure is :D Right click on the bookmarks in question, select properties, and change the name to nothing. Then right click on the the toolbars somewhere (or view -> toolbars -> customise) and drag the bookmarks toolbar options to the RHS of the location bar (yes it's called the location bar in Firefox, as opposed to the address bar in IE.) Then drag the search bar into the customise toolbar window. I predict you'll end up with a grey bar across the screen with nothing in it - right click on it and click "Bookmarks toolbar" (it should have a tick next to it) and it will go away. You can also unselect it by going to view -> toolbars. Any other questions, feel free to ask me
  5. When I wrote that guide it was correct but AFAIK it's not been updated since the forums were restructured - we'd need info from an admin regarding which boards the MOD is applied to.
  6. I use .org/wordpress/chatzilla-on-xulrunner/]Chatzilla, but as an XULRunner application rather than as a Firefox extension - that way, when I restart Firefox I don't have to restart Chatzilla :D
  7. Refresh is now on the RHS of the address bar. Anesthesia: There are free and paid extensions for IE, and for Firefox - Firefox just has a better community surrounding them :D As for the new logo: weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee ...
  8. For posting on these forums, BBCodExtra. If you use webmail, webmailcompose :) Adblock is inconsiderate of the people hosting websites for free.
  9. No of course not - that's why they're called nightly builds :) For everyone who is not hardcore, please do not click the following link: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/ ... est-trunk/ Of course you can check the code out from CVS and build it yourself, but building has a whole bunch of requirements and is a general nightmare.
  10. I'd predict sometime before the end of the year.. I have a schedule saying that one was planned for October, but yeah, we only just shipped Firefox 2. Discussion with some other groupies is pointing at the end of November, early December. Obviously if you're really interested, you can run Minefield nightlies alongside Firefox 2, using a different profile, allowing you to be on the bleeding edge of development and find and test for bugs, but also being able to use Firefox 2 for your mission-critical browsing. So summing up, no I don't know when one will be available.
  11. Yeah, very sure. Obviously there's nightly branch builds which contain checkins for what will become 2.0.0.1, but they're just for developers and testers, and then there's also trunk builds which will become Firefox 3, but there's definitely nothing related to 2.1.
  12. Get a mate to come around and try their laptop on your connection?
  13. Yeah but the 2.0 alphas are a little different from Minefield 3.0a1 (it's not even called Firefox.) The alphas for Fx 2.0 were chosen from the nightly builds and given some minimal testing before they were distributed. Checkins were restricted, the codebase was slowly frozen and gradually only patches with minimal/negligable risk were allowed to be checked in. Trunk (which is currently at 3.0a1) undergoes no testing before it is distributed. Often the trunk builds are completely busted and don't even build, sometimes they crash on startup, sometimes they delete profile data. They're build directly from CVS and are only meant for developers and testers - nothing more. Heh, total crap :D [*:2dyxrzpp]Purely opinion - the new theme is liked by hundreds of thousands of other Firefox users. You can always download the old theme if you prefer it, or use any other theme you want. Try https://addons.mozilla.org for starters. [*:2dyxrzpp]Blacklist-based anti-phishing is better than no anti-phishing. Google phishing protection is not enabled by default, and I'm fairly sure there have been significant changes since the first release of the google toolbar. I am also fairly sure it doesn't send urls that are accessed via SSL. [*:2dyxrzpp]Many new features have been added - Microsummaries, inline spellchecking, session restore, feed management - and these all need to be configurable. The reshuffle just feels odd because we're used to the old design, but all the options are in logical places. [*:2dyxrzpp]99.9% of add-ons are not maintained by Mozilla - compatibility of 3rd party add-ons is a problem with any browser, or any extendable or skinnable application for that matter. That said, extension compatibility for this release is light years ahead of what it was for previous releases (I know because I was involved in the push to get developers to update their extensions :)) [*:2dyxrzpp]This "well known memory leak issue" - exactly whom is it well known by, and what about it is known? As far as I know, many memory leak bugs have been fixed in Firefox 2 and work continues on fixing more for Firefox 3. Personally, Firefox 2 seems just fine if I don't leave it open for days on end - and with session restore I can just restart it and keep all my tabs open. [*:2dyxrzpp]CSS implementation has improved in Firefox 2. These "reported problems" the dude speaks of - exactly where were they reported, and why aren't they linked to? I'm willing to bet it's sites not coded to web standards by a web developer who uses IE. [*:2dyxrzpp]7 & 8 - one user reporting a problem on their website or posting on a forum does not constitute "reports" or add up to "numerous users" - it does look like those people could use some support, but there's no evidence of bugs there. [*:2dyxrzpp]Firefox is not a feed-reader. Firefox is a web browser. Firefox offers to add feeds to an external application, be it web based or otherwise, and options to configure this. Er... no it's not... :-k
  14. ...when logged out. This has stopped collection of statistics at http://www.big-boards.com/board/962/ - and I very much liked those statistics :( I understand that this was probably removed for speed reasons - I don't see the need for the list of logged in users and the most recently registered user, etc., but if we could add those statistics back, it would be much appreciated. Please? :) Additionally, what's with the "welcome fellow scapers" board? It used to be that there was only announcements and that one (IIRC) when logged out so that it was prominent.. now, nobody's ever going to look at it.
  15. Nah, phpbb can handle much larger ones - see http://rankings.big-boards.com/?sort=po ... ,all&p=all
  16. You mean you want to use php to process pages locally? For that you could download apache and php, or go the whole hog and get WAMP (Apache, Mysql and Php running on Windows) http://www.wampserver.com/en/
  17. Anesthesia: by default, it only works in multiline form fields (ie. works on post body, but not on post subject. Also, if you right click, select "languages" and there's no dictionaries in there, you have to install one. Click "add dictionaries" and it should offer you one for your locale. You then have to restart Firefox, then type something incorrect and it should work. If it doesn't then, drop into #darkwebz or ping me on moznet As for using trunk - you gotta be brave! I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who's not a developer.
  18. Millions of other users have had no trouble with installing Firefox 2 over the top of 1.5.0.*, but if you've got anything reproducible, please do file a bug. I love the spellchecker too :D It sucks that some locales don't come with a dictionary by default (licensing issues) but you can easily download them by right clicking in a form field -> langauges -> Add dictionaries :)
  19. If you don't have the most recent version of your operating system, pictures can contain viruses. If you use windows, set it to automatically notify you of (or download) windows updates. If you have an up to date OS, browser and firewall, that's simply not the case.
  20. Appears fine to me - was it too long before?
  21. Both of you - that's not really a problem Firefox would be able to cause I don't think :-? Did you install Firefox from mozilla.com ? And did you ONLY install Firefox, or have you made any other modifications to your system, installed any other applications, etc.?
  22. After conferring over IRC, we decided this was because of Cruiser's OS settings on different computers.
  23. Try http://mozillalinks.org/wp/2006/10/firefox-2-review/ :) nvw08: All software has bugs :( Fortunately, the hidden-bookmarks-on-upgrade-to-firefox-2 bug has a simple workaround :)
  24. Of course I have it! :P I have since alpha 3 ;) Anesthesia: to get your tabs to bunch up closer together without showing the scroll UI set browser.tabs.tabMinWidth to something small (like 30 or so.) See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.tabs.tabMinWidth for more info. If you're not familiar with configuring advanced preferences, type about:config in your location bar and then in the filter box type "tabs" Then double click on browser.tabs.tabMinWidth and set the new value. Now, back to Firefox 2... it rocks! :D And if you go to Help -> About Mozilla Firefox -> Credits, my name is in there! My favourite new features in Fx 2 would have to be session restore and inline spell checking - Firefox crashing and losing all my tabs (which kind of work like a to-do list) was one of the biggest pains in the [wagon], and my spelling isn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t great (although it̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s not bad either) so these make a big difference to me. I̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢m not so enthusiastic about microsummaries, and while the visual refresh is cool, it̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s not uber fantastic. I don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t use search plugins (I use quicksearch bookmarks to save UI space) but I do appreciate all the other thousands of bugs that have been fixed for the release. I can̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t wait for Fx 3 too - Fx2 was branched off the same branch as 1.5 was on (1.8) so there have been things fixed on the trunk from over a year ago that will not be in Fx2, but that̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s development for you :)
  25. I too think Gen F2P should be about P2P, fwiw.
