Iddison resigns as Jagex CEO, replaced by Mark Gerhard
Any publicly traded company must release its financial 10K based on their fiscal year. Each and every company gets to choose what their fiscal calendar is, usually dependent on business segment. Most government contractors coincide with US Gov't for fiscal year (ending 30 September), whereas most retailers end their fiscal year in January to capture the Holiday sales season. There is no way to know if Iddison moved by his choice or upon command of the Gowers. Speculation at this point is merely that.

30-January-2009 Penguin bannings
This stinks! I was out all week and came back for my weekly penguins. It is bugged - saying "I already spotted that penguin" and I can't get any credit. I had done the penguins (fairly) last week, but can't get my 30k Runecraft Exp this week. Weak!

20-Jan-2009 Seers Achievement Diary
Quite a bit of disparity. Great achievements: - Varrock - incredible advantage to mining, nice boost to smithing, and roughly 100K worth of battlestaves-driven income per day. Absolutely awesome. Good achievements: - Falador - Shield with best prayer bonus in the game and fantastic ability to recharge prayer fully (saves a full prayer pot once a day). Unstoppable at Dark Beasts for whippers like me. - Karamja - Gloves are a must for slayers who use Duradel. One-click teleport to a very useful and otherwise unaccessable region. - Lumbridge - Ring with cabbage port direct to otherwise difficult herb spot. 30 Free casts of low alchemy / day (terrific at mediocre slayer tasks). 3 Free charges of 50% run energy recovered. This one borders on great for me. Poor achievements: - Fremmenik - Free teleport to Fremmenik, which would be great if there was no CIP fairy ring, House teleport, or enchanted lyres. Abilty to sell stuff flatpacked to Advisor Grimm. Mitigates loss during construction, but a huge pain. - Seers - Sword bonus which is a fairly useful spec, but redundant when considering Bunyip / Unicorn. Cap which is not very profitable or useful.

Modern day smithing/mining advice
So, I am a fairly good smither (level 80), but it's been about 6 months - year since I seriously did any of either. What are the currently preferred methods of mining / smithing for a decent balance of fast exp and reasonable cost efficiency? I've considered quite a few methods: - Iron mining with Spirit Kyatt - Mining mith / adamantite under Grand Tree. - Gold mining at horseshoe / crafting guild / keldagrim. - Granite mining. There are several ups and downs of all these methods. I also would like mining something that would translate into either good money or something smithable. Granite is way down in value, and gold negates the value of Stealing Creation hammers (something I will definitely look to use). If I were to do something to raise the cash to fund smithing, would I get creamed? Ideally, I'd like to make enough profit mining to fund my smithing losses. I was thinking of perhaps mining iron, then selling that, and buying lots of addy bars. I have plenty of cash for adamantite bars, but don't want to waste it either. Do people buy anything that can be smithed from addy bars (bolt tips, arrow tips, etc.?). If not, I'll probably just mine iron and trade it in for lots of mithril for a long, tedious trip to the blast furnace (with tons of SC hammers, of course). Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Total levels overrated?
I vote to strike the use of "Overrated" from our general public lexicon. It's outrageously misunderstood and overused. No one has any idea what my total level is unless they ask or choose to view that as the measuring stick for my RS progress from my sig/stat lookup. On the contrary, players are registered in game by combat level. Many annoying players have addressed me by my combat level. "Hey, 111! Hey, 121!" In this regard, combat level is -clearly- more important as a status symbol. Total level is misleading at times, sure. Since I set goals like "80+ in all skills", my total level is much higher than an average player with my time in game. Not that it matters; the only time I make a note of total is if I hit a milestone. Just like all other metrics (combat, money, 99s, items) we use to define people in RS, the standard rules apply: [*:2ir93nw4]If someone is a jerk, then they'll be a jerk regardless. They'll overemphasize how important combat/total/money/items/99s may be to prop themselves up and feel better.[*:2ir93nw4]If someone is insecure, they'll attack what they struggle with. If they have no money, money is "overrated". If they can't fight, combat is "overrated". In the case of this thread, if their total is low, total is "overrated".[*:2ir93nw4]Nothing prevents people from developing their characters to make up for shortcomings. If you don't like being teased for a low level, stop saying "farming stinks lol" with level 2 farming. Go grab those runecrafting pouches. Train up construction to improve your ghetto house. OR, realize that if it's not important to you, it's not important. There is no shame in having fun.

Why do you wear "great" armor or use an "awesome" weapon?
I use Barrows pieces along with whip / d sq or rune def, d boots, barrow gloves, trimmed cape, and fury. Nothing is that expensive, and the bonuses and speed to kill increase is significant. Since it will take a loooong time to max melees or get 99 slayer, every fairly economical improvement helps. I do weigh the value of these improvements. I'd happily slow down tasks like black dragons to avoid using p pots.

Weak Passwords Must Be Changed - 09-January-2009
This reminds me of when Jagex officially decreed luring against the TOS. People were outraged, as they enjoyed their predatory practice and said that people who fell for it "deserved to lose what they lost". I think this update works very effectively in that it ensures that if someone -IS- hacked, it is the result of them downloading a keylogger or telling someone else. In other words, stop crying to Jagex when you get hacked.

Jan. 7 Poll Clues! Sailing Skill [NEW] Exploration Skill
I think it's just speculation that's a bit overreactive. Jagex would need to make sailing ENORMOUS to be of any value. As is, teleportation methods are so prevalant that any speed in transit is almost laughable. You have normal, lunar, and ancient teleports, fairy rings, gnome gliders, eagles, hot air balloons, several one-click (ecto, elf, karamja, sceptre, cabbage) several teleportation jewelries (duel, glory, games, various bracelets), summons which teleport, wilderness switch, wilderness obelisks, and more. The only way sailing could be useful would be access to previously non-existant spots. Places to fish, hunt, slay, etc., only accessible via sailing. Of course, there's no need for the skill, either. Jagex already has charter ships, and can always insert new teleportation media to work around rolling out a whole new skill.

Things you regret on RuneScape!
"Investing" (hah!) in rares.

who thinks we need a new high lvl slayer monster
Nope. Slayer isn't precisely struggling. It's one of the most popular skills in the game. Save that rollout for a booster shot when the skill's interest wanes.

A Year of Summoning: A year in review.
I adore summoning. It's a great gift at a high but not unreasonable price. I've spent little to no time actively traning summoning. I train slayer, and have collected a very respectable amount of charms. Leveling summoning is incredibly fast once you have the charms, which for me just sort of came in through other training. The money is not insignificant, but well worth it. Bunyips, tortoises, granite lobbies, and titans are worth their weight in gold.

Torso is NOT better then Adamant
I agree with Dr. Vermin on this one. The two sides aren't looking at the problem from the same perspective. Until that happens, you're never going to have any semblance of congruence. I thought the argument made to start the whole thread is a very well thought, interesting one, but it is all predicated upon a very unrealistic assumption: that all people value their time the same way. "Efficiency" is a very slippery slope. Who can play and tell someone else they're "wrong" for playing games in the Burthope Games room? Of the 5M or so members, there are like 40 great people who enjoy it. They aren't making money, or exp, but so what? The process of getting the torso is inefficient, but I'd wager most who play the game are not operating at full efficiency. Depending on your goals (money, item, skill, skill total), definition of efficiency can vary wildly. For some people, the value of an item that lets them hit a little higher is extraordinary, since they really love the high red numbers. This appreciation may not be completely logical, but to them it makes the game more fun. The argument for itself certainly works as a very valid opinion/argument based on the author's opinion. It also fails to account for the intrinsic value of hitting a smidge harder, and how much people enjoy that. I don't have a torso; to me it's not worth MY time. If the next guy wants one, well, too each his own. Head down to BA and have fun.

Lifetime Subscriptions?
That's quite the commitment. If the price were, say $100, I'd probably go for it. That's just under 2 years at normal subscription rates. Past that, there's really no impetous for Jagex to do this unless they plan on mailing it in and stopping the release of new content (or doing a less stellar job). Otherwise the assumption that people will want to play for a lifetime would incentivize Jagex to just get monthly fees. The price balance would be really hard.

Ourania - Is it worth it?
Yes! It's much faster than normal RC for experience, and in the 60s you should break even in terms of value of runes to essence. Also, you should use penguins! 1 Week's worth of penguins is 32k RC exp; well worth the effort!

A possible future Fremennik quest?
It's possible, although that picture could be linked to existing Fremmenik land. Additionally, that's sort of how Brundt always talks, so I get a little "boy who cried wolf" there. That said, stranger things have happened, and the allusions aren't out of the question.

Tip.It Times: Jan 4, 2009 (New Style!)
The authors admit here that previous work flipped 10,000 coins and came up with the 0.50 probability, and that they have not tested their "bias" nearly as much. They flipped less times and came up with a slight incongruence, and since they're from Stanford you considered it law. Good try, though. NukeMarine, I understand what you're saying, but my article tried to touch as much to the psychological process of coping with luck regarding each successful drop as it did discuss rolling or progressive probability. I'm really opposed to having to document both sides of every argument. These articles are editorials, not documentary/educational papers, and a formed opinion is absolutely critical to generate dissention/discussion. Without the ability to show a unique perspective, these articles would be extremely boring.

Tip.It Times: Jan 4, 2009 (New Style!)
The "natural bias" is nonsense. The differential is based on starting side (do you flip with heads/tails up), weight of offset sides (is the "head" deco more or less heavy than tail imprint?), height of toss and element of cheating. This doesn't begin to account for left vs. right hand, different coins, and coin disclosure style (catch, catch and flip, allow to hit ground). Too many variables, and 0.01 is a huge discrepancy from commonly held 0.50. If you're claiming that, show your sources, or go back to discussing topics at hand.

Tip.It Times: Jan 4, 2009 (New Style!)
This is something we discussed when this was being screened/edited. For clarification, I was simply saying that given you've already flipped nine heads, the odds that your next toss will be a head is still 50/50 (given that it is a "fair" die). I certainly agree that the odds of getting a given drop/reward over a number of trials will always increase when more trials are presented. It's the very existence of this dichotomy that makes the independent trial law so much more interesting. I enjoyed hearing that I have never taken a physics class, although the school that gave me an MS degree in Engineering probably would not.

Tip.It Presents: RuneScript
Looking forward to this! I'd love to see traceability of progress worked into existing TipIt tools. The tools on the main site are terrific, but adding in the ability to see not only where you're going, but where you've been... That would be fantastic.

Firemaking, not a newb 99
People who call firemaking a newb cape don't have it. I grinded to 92 for the adze and it was brutal. I am in no rush to finish up because i know just how hard it is.

The Godsword is the Highest Level Player Made Item
The critics of the thread have created tangential arguments that don't really pertain to the main point. As a writer on staff, I can sympathize with the author in that respect. :-) I think the biggest development we could see involves an easy way for Jagex to rebalance the game away from being combat only: rare "extractions" that are timely based on high level non-combat skills. I absolutely -love- that idea, because presently the game's chief rewards for quick-turnaround, luck-based income is ALL combat. It would be easy enough for Jagex to implement trees that drop something special (hello, bird nests!) which can then be used to create something valuable. This could very easily give a great shot of energy to skills like mining, smithing, crafting, etc. which all lack enough long term reward to generate an incentive to level the skill.

what are blunt weapons?????
"Blunt" refers to any weapon which is not sharp, or a weapon that strikes and damages based on it's raw mass, without aiming to penetrate the skin of an enemy (like a whip does). In game, this typically refers to a weapon with a crush-based attack option. Thinking of blunt weapons, consider big, heavy weapons. Warhammers, battleaxes, the Barrelchest Anchor, and GodSwords are all options which offer this feature.

Fighter Torso Discussion/Argument Thread
Well, if you get a ton of fun out of maxing your hardest hit, then you should get it. The strength bonus from the torso is impractical, but if it's fun, then whatever. The game is still about having fun. If you just want to hit as hard as possible, knock yourself out. If you're trying to be time-efficient and go for best strategic planning, maybe there are some better choices available.

2nd January 2009 - Behind the Scenes 2009 // January
I understand that, but in all likelihood the two teams probably came from similar / same pools, so it's very likely that some MechScape staff was pirated from Runescape staffers, who then dedicate 100% of their time to Mechscape. Two Java games, both MMORPGs, similar target audience... Jagex would be CRAZY not to use existing expertise. They would never announce this was done, but the changing in the guard for "Head of RS Vince" speaks volumes. It's not to say that Runescape is being abandoned in any respect, but I think that there should/ will always be a connection between Mechscape and Runescape, whether stated or not. I agree with you on the new content vs. existing game development front. Skills like mining and smithing have been in DIRE need of help for a long time (and the new animation is a mining killer!). While things like star mining are nice auxiliary boosters, they certainly don't stand in for detail overhauls.

Your least favourite update of 2008.
Just as a tip - the Fally shield is absolutely incredible at Dark beasts. Best prayer bonus in game AND the recharge means you get about 10 free kills off the recharge plus 10-20 additional kills (due to slower pray drain) for every trip. Great for whipper-snappers like me. Couldn't disagree more about summoning being a failure, either. I find that while there are certain hiccups (pet AI being listed; that's true), the skill is both very balanced and wildly useful. The update I didn't care for this year was probably the Fremmenik Diary. Those boots haven't left my bank since I got the third stage ones.
