Should a members only skill be opened up to f2p?

Featured Replies

What I think: Jagex started out Runescape as an F2P only game. They saw that they could put more money in their pockets by adding the P2P option. Of course, they didn't want players to have to start out paying $5 a month, just to kill Goblins, make Bronze Daggers, and beg the lvl 80+'s for money ( :? ). That's why they kept the F2P option. To let players get some of their stats up a little bit before paying for the full game. Besides, they could just put ads on the F2P game page to make a little bit of money of F2P players. They knew that some people wouldn't find it necessary, couldn't afford it, couldn't play so much that it'd be worth $5, etc., but they still make money from the ads. So they didn't really care how many people played for free, because they still made money off of it.

There used to be a post about opening up part of one or some p2p skills to f2p, I didn't see it as such a bad idea for some of the ideas that were posted.

As an example allowing f2p to fletch up to their max bows and arrows.

I believe that the thieving skill should be introduced to free-to-play. With the option to train up to 99 but f2p'ers can only thieve things in the f2p world.

I wouldnt mind but Jagex wont do it because members PAY and by having less f2p skills more people become members. So more money for Jagex.

Yes. Depending on who you ask, its a good idea. I think fletching would be best as it would f2p to save money on arrows and we might see more people shooting monsters with bows. Course this might send prices of arrows down and leave some p2p cursing and swearing( I'm not sure).

This will also send the prices of logs up as people want to fletch bows and arrows, thats the counter to any negative results of this on the economy. Of course, it need not be fully opened up, just keep everything beyond a certain point members only( 65 and above?).

I would prefer fletching or construction( I want a house to live in, not live off the streets like a beggar).

hmm f2p wants a new skill? you can have farming, its a blast  to be honest half of the member skills stink -.- i mean who wants to farm? i would much rather say that f2p could have skill capes before f2p would get a new skill. why? because i give credit to a f2p who worked that hard on a 99 without p2p advantages. a new skill? jagex is doing their job if theyre making you want to pay for more. sorry.

farming is still my offer

^^^ Not a hope in Hell. Though I would think fletching would be the most likely, probably only making arrows up to adamant.

Woodcutting does not raise your combat level because most people do not play as yew trees.

IF there would be a P2P skill that would be opened up to F2P, I think it would be Agility, since there are many shortcuts etc. in the free worlds and since ex-members in the free world with a high agility level have an unfair advantage: Their energy restores faster.

Although I think F2P must stay what it is now. I mean, I pay for the updates, the F2P players don't. So...

tif1mn0.png

Yea there are a few that lately have been made completely pointless by skillcapes/are useless

Fletching-well willows, maples, and yews are f2p, the skill is pretty much pointless now since there is no profit in it, and plus people can make bows for themselves that they will actually use, and hey it's boring anyway. By all means if f2p wants to do this skill let them (of course with limited lvls for them like addy arrws etc)

Thieving-yes there are no stalls, some can be added no biggie, and there are plenty of npcs to thieve, but once again quite pointless, thieving wouldn't be a good money maker (again limited).

Early levels of herblore-yea yea taverly will have to be made f2p, so what there's practically nothing good there, and then f2p can get some basic pots like att, def, some restores etc. This would be usefull as mems dont use them whatsoever and it would be a nice bonus to f2p (once again limited).

Now farming in my opinion is a dumb thing to give to f2p, what will they plant potatoes? Honestly they won't get any better and the skill in early levels is really pointless (they won't get herbs and limited tree if anything). Agility in my opinion is one of the great reasons to become a member so you can run faster, no offense this should be kept member as it is very usefull and is worthy of being paid for as a bonus. But some things that should be made f2p in my opinion are things like being able to make green dhide, pretty usefull just add some drags in deep wild. Also add some better armor/weapons for higher lvls in ranged (yew bows? blue dhide?), mage (mystic, splitbark etc they're not used anyway at least zammy), and melee (drag meds maybe, they're pointless now, and granite too, as well as granite mauls)...honestly with the intro of god armors/weps and barrows some weps and armors are now completely arbitrary so there is no harm into putting them into f2p, hell it will make f2p more fun. And at least show that jagex cares a little about the f2pers and maybe even make some new mems. Yea people will say but we pay for this blah blah blah, honestly mostly all the stuff mentioned is almost no use to p2p as new contents comes out.

No, no, no, no, no. You know why? Because that would mean getting members is a complete waste of time, especially since if f2p gets members skills, they will also get new areas introduced to them. :x

I love posts like this. People who don't bother to actually read a few posts/pages ahead of time and see counter-arguments should not bother posting at all =\

No "complete" skill would be opened to F2P. Just a part of it. A part of a skill has been debated that it's not actually sufficient enough to argue that people won't buy memberships just because F2P got something P2P had. (Just like with the Party room and Duel Arena, how many Memberships were canceled due to them being opened up to F2P? I bet you it's close to 0.)

Members will still have access to everything they get when buying a Membership. In no way does giving F2P something actually affect what P2P gets.

There should be somewhat of a members trial offered to you at any time for a specific time period (perhaps one month). All the FTP players would have a chance to witness this fun in their own perspective and decide if membership is the right thing to pursue. After this time period of "membership", however, all the levels gained while in members will be removed.

There are skills that are partly opened to FTP, such as Cooking or Fishing, which essentially give them a taste of membership. If a new skill was partly introduced like Farming, sooner or later, like all FTP skills, it wouldn't be considered a taste but more a reality. Hence, the idea of having a "trial" would be more beneficial and won't get the members crazy (I'm FTP by the way).

I'm F2P for the current while, but I don't think that a member-only skill should be opened to F2P. If a member-only skill was introduced to F2P, Jagex would have to open almost the entire map to F2P because the P2P skills are based everywhere but in the F2P area.

Instead, expand F2P skills - more fishing areas, more things to fish for F2P, that kind of thing.

It just goes to show that, though there's an age requirement, there's no IQ requirement to play RS.

Wait, my friend said he got a keylogger and lyke he coudln't type, so I assumed it messed up his hands?
No. The market for iron arrows (Used most often in training) would crash.

I've got no problem with that, the cheaper the better :P

some things can't get too cheap...

Nice to know it has some support, hardly a debate though :). Can I just point out that I'm p2p and not f2p, I just feel that something has to be done about the f2p game for those who are unable to get membership or just don't feel it is worth it. Well, perhaps with this, they would.

You [bleep]ing moron. If you don't feel it's worth it then you don't [bleep]ing get the skill. If you're unable to get it, well, let's think about what the reasons could be.

You're poor? Internet costs money, as does a computer.

You have no credit card? Pay by phone.

I can't believe I'm [bleep]ing justifying this.

I wouldn't call that a justification for the argument at hand. It's an argument for getting members. Not an argument against giving a skill to f2p.

Also, starting out with a ad hominem attack?

No of course not. A whole new skill is way too much to ask, especialls considering updates like the party room, clan wars, bounty hunter, and HD runescape. Maybe some additions to an old f2p skill would be more reasonable, but that's still stretching it.

Doctors repeat themselves because they have nothing better to say......

Sorry, but no. I know some can't pay the 5-6$, but that's like in the real life. If you can't pay for caviar, then you're not going to have any. As simple as it is.

Do you think Ubisoft(example) should make their games free because some people can't afford them? Of course not.

Remember Jagex is there to make money. And the more p2p skills there are, the most people will want to get members.

And what about your argument of "giving a taste"? Well, if they can't pay, whatever the taste they have, they won't be able to pay. Invalid argument.

WarBlastoise.png
Yeah, this seems to be the opinion of most people when concerning the addition of p2p features to f2p. May I remind you that some people truly can't afford the $5 (̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã3.20 in my case) or aren't allowed to become members. And I stick with farming, although I'm open to other suggestions.

Then you're just out of luck. Jagex is not running a charity. The only purpose for F2P is to make people want P2P. So, they're not going to give F2P another skill. Sure it would be fun for F2P, but it's not going to happen.

That makes perfect sence. I agree fully.

=D

Well, it could be a good idea to bring some fresh enjoyment in the game but what about the greedy members?

Greedy members? Now tell me, who's the one freeloading a game, eh?

The only 2 skills that would make any sense being F2P are farming and fletching. From my PoV, Jagex would do fletching. Why you ask. Well its simple really... What is the point of farming? To get seeds for Herblore. Herblore would not become F2P. What is the point of Woodcutting? To get logs for firemaking. There is no point in firemaking for F2P. So What is the other alternative to using the logs? Yes, Fletching!

My stats are updated weekly... Sometimes...

yes, i believe that a membs skill should be given to f2p . However, it is unlikely that it will happen. Why? As we all know, Jagex is a company, and their main aim to earn as much as possible. By opening up p2p parts to f2p, some f2p may choose to remain f2p as there is no point for them to go membs. Plus, the f2p version is just a "demo" and it is a small part in the whole of rs. thus, its gets boring after a while... this pushes people to get members to have more fun and hence, allowing jagex to earn more money.

yepp that about it .. but i still hope that one skill should be opened up to f2p... lol .. i know .. freeloader :-#

v7hblz.jpg

#3325 to 99 Smithing #4332 to 99 Herblore

As an F2Per, I don't agree with it. I would rather have a new skill then to open up a members only skill. Why go to the extent to make it so troublesome, as Jagex would then have to edit so much things, rather than new content.

Yeah, like that zaryte bow

wait

recharge costs = ammo.

So, all melee weapons are overpowered, at least.

this combat triangle finally makes sense...

Herblore and Fletching are the only 2 skills that could have an impact on F2P when given as a small demo. If any skills would be "demoed" off to F2p people, it would probably be one of these two.

That works pretty well for me, except for fletching, I just don't beleive that is needed in f2p. With the attack and strength potions...not many members use them and they are as cheap as free air. Well not really, but you get my point. I think that is all that needs to be added if anything. But then again...I pay money to be able to make those potions, i don't think they should get it for nothing.
