What will Runescape be like in 50 years? Or even 5?

Featured Replies

Runescape in 50 years will be nonexistent. It will be so old that it would have simply been scraped.

There seems to be a general consensus forming with the sentiments that RuneScape will be non-existentent, I advise changing the amount of years from 50 to 5. :)

tifsbti6oi.gif

Has any game like RuneScape lasted more than 15 years or so? I don't think so, and I really don't see why RuneScape will last much longer than 5-10 more years (and I think that's stretching it). Sure people love the game and the number of members is increasing right now, but it'll all slow down eventually. That is of couse unless they (Jagex) can expand the game tremendously, which I don't think will happen.

In other words, the game will be gone soon. :-w

Runescape will be here but if you quit now and came back in 50 years you would never ever reconize it.

we'd be playing on soem type of computer so fast and advanced....

50 years? Well I'll be almost 68, I'm not going to be in a position to play or even care what kind of games the young wippersnappers are playing nowadays. Back in my day we did it all infront of a computer screen and mouse, nevermind all this virtual reality nonsense!

how do you know you wont care? There could be like some pill in 50 years that pumps up grannys and grandpas so that they can play with their grandchildren and whatnot. you never know

if it lasts 50 years it will be a big game thinking about it its on its 7th year so far and its only really open to uk/us and germany they are planning to make version on the game in

spanish

french

italian

chinse

and many other lanauges if this does happen it means that there will be many more then 1million members and with the update of java consoles the game will keep to develope in graphics and size and features so at this present time it seems like runescape will stay for a long time if it keeps developing :D

I actually think that there's hope for the game ... If they can fix the macroing problem ...

How will it be around?

My only logic here is that, well, if you think about it, we're just beginning the online-gaming era. Go back a few years, before the X-Box 360 and PS3, and there really wasn't a way to even play online. Now that games like Guitar Hero, Gears of War, and many others have come out and began updating their games online, as well as making new versions, who knows?

For those who say that there has never been a game to last more than 10-15 years ... Erm, could you name one? 5-15 years back is '02 - '92 ... In 1992, I don't think that many people would have been able to play an online game with the computers avalible, definately not like RuneScape ... And I also don't think that a company would have been able to update a game without pulling the whole site down for a week, and then forcing everyone to do a full 3 hour-1 day download to continue playing ... If the company would have been able to keep an online database of all the stats. Else it would just be like a flash game today.

Personally, I believe that since RuneScape is able to compound experience with multiple log-ins, update the game regularly, meaning once every week or 2, and since they've proven that they care about jumps in technology (by moving from RSC to RS2 for the soul sake of graphics) I definately think it's possible that RuneScape will be here because boredom won't surcome players as fast - if ever - while playing RuneScape ... As long as they keep updating the game and making it possible to do different things :) .

What would change?

Well, first of all, in 50 years I think the HD stage will be at full and everyone will most likely have an HD computer - or something better - at their homes. RuneScape would probably look like WoW right now, yet with better graphics. By saying that I mean being able to see limbs on trees, grass, hills and mountains in the distance, tasks less repetitive and more skill-oriented, andmany other things. You'd probably be able to jump, swim, and many other things that the average person today would be able to do. Macroing would be nea-impossible - if even possible - and every player would of course be prevented of cheating on any level, how, I don't really know; but I'm sure it'll happen.

On the armor and weapons stampoint, I don't think there will be many more armors, but I do believe there will be more that one can do with armor, such as trimming the armor with some substance gotten from the ... err ... mountains of the Gods, Idk :-s ? As well as socketing and things like that.

I only say this based upon the complaints that people have about the game today. Graphics being a major one, along with macroing, followed by new skills, newer weapons, and many other things along the lines of that (you reminded me of one of my older suggestionns, thanks, hopefully people will like this one as much as Live Maps :XD: )

My suggestion to the game (that wou'll be able to find shortly in the Bugs & Suggestions section of tip.it), and future prediction, is also that all armors won't be the same. All of the metals and materials will still exist, but mattering how good you are, you could make a better or worse sword, mattering how lucky you are, the monster you kill could drop a higher-bonus rune sword, or a lower-bonus rune sword. The same weapon, different attributes to that weapon (See descriptions of Diablo II's weapon and Armor system if you want to know more about what I'm talking about and the scam-proof ways that people would trade).

-------------------------------------

These are my beliefs of the future of RuneScape, reguardless if owned by Andrew and Paul, I have a feeling that whichever company gets ahold of it, be it Blizzard, Microsoft, or someone else. Hopefully that company will, in fact, be able to add more to the game faster than Andrew and Paul because of this future company's beginning cashflow.

Just an opinion.

Offtopic: Now moving onto making that suggestion :XD:

Well thats well thought out. I thinik that you are right there. It will be different but the principles will be the same. I'm going to put a not in the subject not due to request.

Well uh, let's just talk basic computers.

Basic computers 50 years ago were...yeah...

Who are we to guess what the next 50 years will bring?

We are already WAY behind in graphics, controls, etc. People already laugh at the graphics - including myself! I am not saying I can do better making a game - I am saying with that much money I know they can!

I suspect it won't even last another 10 years, unless they pull out runescape 3 with the same concept of WoW play. That is, unless runescape somehow becomes a "classic" like mario....flat chance of that happening.

Let's face it, runescape clans have been along for how long now?

And jagex hasn't added one support system for it?

How long has the private chat been around? Why is this still a horrible experience?

It seems jagex is at fault here, not the game itself - they are basically blind to what's needed to be done, or what people want (AKA the ditch).

There are many aspects of the game that can only be made better. It takes time to make a whole new game but i do agree ith the idea of an WoW type of Runescape. On the other hand, rs is great for its own reasons. Take a look at this quote from another post:

WoW Pro's

Better graphics. (obviously)

More weapon, armour, and clothes options.

Better viewing options.

More quests.

Team and group/party options.

Ability to filter/unfilter cursing.

Ability to play with several characters of different races.

When you die, you don't lose your items.

WoW Con's:

Massive updates (took me hours on a high speed connection to get them all)

Hard to understand at first. (RS comparatively was easy, even without guides)

Higher Price than RS to play + ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã15 or more to buy the actual game.

Can only be played on computers with it installed.

2 Skills can only be trained at once.

RS Pro's:

A massive economy, with trading highly encouraged.

Javascript, meaning that nearly anybody can play it from nearly any computer.

Can be played for free, if short on money.

Many skills to train.

Easy to understand.

RS Con's:

Graphics, music, and sound all leave something to be desired. (cmon Jagex, even having more distiguishable faces would be nice).

Not many reasons other than skillcapes to get all the way to 99. As well as not many high lvl quests.

Macroing (hopefully something more serious will be done about it now).

Jagex making the game aimed at younger and younger people.

Okay, now some things that are similar.

Both WoW and RS:

Have people that earn gold to make real money (especially annoying on WoW when they whisper you about buying gold).

Are very addictive, enjoyable games, where the community can either be annoying, or helpful.

Are about lvling, which basically means that the higher you are, the higher you hit, the more tough monsters you attack and so on.

Cost money to really appreciate them.

Contrasts:

WoW $15- RS $5 or Free (approx, WoW excl game cost)

Disk space - Internet

They both have there ups and downs. ::'

We will see if rs steps up to the challenge. :D

I think my bang, Thehate, would be that RS just keeps getting bigger and bigger, but the prices then start to fly up for members as well, so Jagex would be bankrupted overnight. That sort of a bang.

No.

it will be here but 10x more advanced

I think that is the overall point. Video games will still be around no doubt about that, but video games as we know them mayby not. 15 years ago mario was the game. know alot more advance. IMagine 50 years of technology to expound on it? :P

There is a large psychological theory about this. I don't remember the exact name but to explain it quickly, basically there is a point when video games become too realistic and people don't want to play them. There is a part of the mind that wants to know that a video game is not real, and when games reach the point of being a second reality, people stop playing. Peoples minds want to know that what they're doing is not real. When a game gets too realistic, the mind can't decide what is real and what is not.

So your theory of imagining games with 50 years of technology may not be correct. Games will come close to the point of perfect realism but will not go any further. Who knows, we might be getting close now.

This is only a theory so it can be proven wrong but it was taught when I took a college class on psychology. And I believe that many psychologists strong agree with it.

im level 76 and IM NOT A NOOB 30- is a noob

I guess there will be still a game that is run by jagex that appears to be very different to runescape on the outside but at the core it has the same basic rules.

It will keep evolving but in the end will become completely different aesthetically to that of todays runescape

In 50 years, I'll probably be dead, so I don't care, but in 5, it will probably have better graphics. The music might be REAL music rather then bad electronic keyboard versions. People will have faces and hands, and the player to player interface will probably be improved. Hopefully, all macros will be dead and gone, and the pker will lie down with the abyss crafter, and their will be peace. I hope the last one won't happen, where will I get cheap runes? I can't wait to see

It is impossible to exaggerate the unimportance of almost everything.

There are already game franchises that have been around for 20+ years and are still really popular, so I don't think it's a stretch to think that some form of Runescape will still be around pretty far into the future. I think it's likely that the game will undergo several major face lifts in that time, to keep up with technology and changing tastes of gamers, so it is very unlikely that Runescape will continue in its current form for more than a few more years.

I mean, if the game keeps growing in profitability, it's only a matter of time before the game franchise gets sold. Any company that buys it will use the name pretty much forever, as Runescape stands at the forefront of the MMORPG genre. The name alone is probably worth several million dollars to a prospective buyer. What they would do with that name is impossible to tell, but it makes sense that future incarnations of Runescape would tend to use similar themes and the same areas that currently exist, in order to keep current subscribers interested in a more advanced version of the current game.

Unless Runescape makes MAJOR graphical changes, and add more stats, etc.

Also, they needs to improve gameplay Player to Player, for example, maybe a clan chat, etc.

maybe 5 Years, Not 50.

Break

BlueSig3.jpg

I think to say it will be here in 50 years is unreasonable, but id like to think at least 10 more years of Runescape!

I think the graphics will be improved, there will be more stats. but i dont think many more because how many stats can there be!? For a newbie im sure the stats are overwhelming already.

P2P offers more and better ways of making money than f2p. That's one of the cons you just have to play with if you don't feel like having 1 bigmac meal less per month.

what will runescape be life in 50 years

i really hope i wont be here still to find out...

The orignal owners of Jagex will be dead though

they might go on a retirement but they certainly wont die in 50 years unless they die alternately.

I really didn't thinkof that. I know many people who play video games to escape from there real life. I guess there wouls be a point where the consumer woud want no part of it because it could be to Real, no where to escape?

That is a sad fact. In many of the future movies though that i have seen (not quite on the collage level =P) many people liked the realaty of a real life sim. That way they can pretend they have a btter life than what they really have. Could the future of games to be like this?
