Featured Replies

so, i was goin to watch pirates 3, wen the movie was over, i decided to head over 2 barnes and noble, and check if there were any new books i wanted. i saw a pendragon book, and it was $16.99, my state tax is 6.5%, so i didn't know if i had enuf money or not (dang! movie food costs a lot!), i go up to the cashier and ask how much it cost with tax, and she goes $18.## (i forgot actual #s...), then she looks down at me at me and asks me in a sneering voice,"can u afford this?" at that moment, i was just about to answer "no, i can't, but u know wat? i'm going to sit here and read all ur books and never buy a single one!", but i didn't say that, all i said was "yea". this ever happen to u guys, were the clerks/ cashiers just assume ur a trouble maker or can't afford the things u want to buy?

Barnes and Noble has a pretty lax return policy...I know a friend who has read like 40 book from there on the same $20. You buy one, read it, take it back and say it sucked, and you can get a different one.

But uhh...Yea, sometimes people are rude. That's when you don't tip them. I could really care less about a clerk though, they're just angry because their job is lame.

Probably wasn't trying to be mean, just was wondering if you had enough money, and was pissed off that she had to be at work.

i'm 16 and a admin at a internet cafe so i basically assume my own kind are trouble makers generally because i know i am myself but where is the fun in not being suspicious to other people. i sometimes make it look like i have done something to get a reaction from shop keepers its always fun having a security guard follow you for 20 minutes when your innocent

That's weird here tax is already printed on the total book price.

Hey don't worry about it, that's when you go back next week after getting paid and buy the book.

If it's the same guy they'll probably be like 'oh......'

If it's not, well you got ur book.

The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours.

Thats terrible service, I used to work retail and thats really bad!

you should have said, of course i can afford it - I dont work in a bookshop.

I sometimes am tempted to be mean to customers, but only when they deserve it, I work at a store at my local mall right now and customer service is right outside the store, yet people come in all the time and ask where it is, you meet some of the dumbest people working in retail lol.

I'm guessing your expression and the way you asked it probably gave away to her that you weren't sure if you could buy it. That and who asks the price of something including tax if they have a credit card or plenty cash? Her then asking if you can afford it is questionable, but what's the big deal really?

Tips? For cashiers who just take your money and give you a receipt?

That's the craziest thing I've heard today.

I think it was more so the way she asked it (tone of voice and such).

I work as a cashier/stocker and I could care less if people try to make trouble. There's always 5 or 6 managers running around the store so the more trouble they cause the less I have the few managers who hate me standing around watching me (I only have 2 managers that like me <.< ).

Extra cash for simply doing your job is crazy :P

In regards to the "can you afford it?" part...

Not really. I've gotten the "You can't afford this" line a few times.

Quite amusing because when I go shopping I look full bogan, like I really can't afford it, but most of the managers around here know if I walk into their store looking to buy something I have the money to buy it :)
