I voted that I'd love it, but to be honest, it doesn't really matter to me.

As long as everything is accessible, and its clear what guides/maps etc. will be in each drop down menu, and they don't have that enormous (+) next to each one, I'd be happy with the drop down menus.

That said, I like the way everything is now, but that might just be because I don't use very much that's near the bottom of the list. However, like some people said, it's gunna get to a point where we get so many guides and maps that the links will be a looooong way down.

So yeah, I like the idea of the menus, as long as they look alright, and we know what's in them. :thumbsup:

I put the answer "I would hate it" even though that opinion is a bit strong really....

How will you be collapsing them? what code will it use? I am a fan of the java colapcing where it will open when a mouse is held over it, but I think the clicky uncolapsing will just slow navigation and put off new users.

It's relatively easy to store someone's preferences, just as you now store the selected theme on the site. Just give people an option to select the menus collapsed or expanded and everyone will be able to select the way they prefer to see the menus and store that selection in a cookie. You could even do this for each separate sub menu, although that would require a bit more programming and cookie space.

Disadvantages:

- Takes longer to navigate

Advantages:

- ?

IF the reason is that more options will be added, minigames and such, then maybe the new lesser ones can be collapsable to save space...but its much easier the way it is now. It's not a big thing at all, it's just....theres not much point adding them :/

The main reason most people wont want this as an update is because the one thing that is a natural fear that many people can't overcome is the fear of change

I disagree, i think the main reason people won't want it is because it is more inconvenient, with no benefits. Give me a good reason for doing it other than "because they can" and i'll reconsider my opinion, but as far as i'm concerned it's just really pointless.

Good idea if you plan to add more stuff

**BUT** :ohnoes:

I think you should be able to save which menus you have open and which you have closed. For example, I do not often use the Atlases therefore I would like that to be closed but the rest I frequently use so it would be convenient for them to remain open so I can easily click on them when I visit TipIt.

This could be achieved by using a preferences link, in which you could customize which menus you would like to have open/closed, that can be saved allowing you to easily access the menus you want without having to collapse them each time.

Guys,

You're all like "oh no, another click will waste time"

the current method takes longer as a whole new page has to load, the page to select the skill of the guide you want.

with collapseable menus, the menu is there, it's just hidden. then you just click the name of the skill. this turns two page loads into one.

I usually use Ctr+F if I want to find something on the menu (like the smithing table, treasure trails and other things I don't use frequently). This isn't possible with Collapsible menus, so I voted No.

It's actually faster just to learn where they are.

A long while ago, tip.it used to have colapseable menus. I liked them. (Although I dont like the way that (+) (-) thing looks on that picture. The (+) (-) thing is too big. Maybe you dont even need (+) (-) signs. Actually just a simple + - would do. You dont need the parenthises.

Important

The site map should be below the colapsable menus. That way people who are new to the site can find what they want easier.

Awhile back, I tried out some DHTML collapsible menus but found that collapsible menus are worth it only when a side frame is used.

I highly discourage any useage of collapsible frames.

Unless of course tipit gets a slight javascript/css makeover.

[Advanced Tech Jargon]

I would recommend that the top tipit logo is used in an absolute css element which would float at the top of the browser window.

The menus would float too but when a category is hovered over, its menu elements would be shown and others would be hidden.

[/Advanced Tech Jargon]

For those less tech savy, I am suggesting that the framework on the left and top of the page not move when you scroll up and down.

This would better allow for collapsible menus.

Instead of this:

DATABASES

* Bestiary

* Items

* Quests

* GUIDES

* Skill Guides

* General Guides

* Mini Games

* Guild Guides

* Monster Hunting

* Treasure Trails

TOOLS

* XP Table

* Skill Calculators

* Skill Planners

* Special Calcs

ATLAS

* World & Wild

* Dungeon Maps

* Special Maps

* Mining Sites

* Hunting Locations

* Fairy Ring Map

INFO

* Beginner's Guide

* Security Centre

* Smithing Tables

* New P2P Members

You get this:

DATABASES

TOOLS

ATLAS

INFO

And as you hover over one of the categories, its elements would pop out like this (Tools used as hover element)

DATABASES

TOOLS

* XP Table

* Skill Calculators

* Skill Planners

* Special Calcs

ATLAS
