there are lots of blackwidows and brown recluses (dunno how to spell it)around where i live which both can kill you but im not to worried since most are afraid of humans and wont attack you unless they are provoked, but then again my home ec teacher got bitten by a brown recluse and coulnt walk for a week and had to get surgery..

The scary thing for me was when I was running the other day around my local area and I had something crawling along my neck but wasn't able to flick it off until about 20 minutes later into my run. I eventually caught it and quickly saw it to be a spider in my hand, with a white tail on its lower half of its body. Thankfully it didn't bite me but white tail spiders are quite dangerous and can even kill in very rare cases.

Here in Nevada, we get these little guys all the time:

brown_recluse2.jpg

They can do some pretty good damage:

[hide=Wound from Brown Recluse (Look with caution; Graphic)]

I get a visit from these guys about 3 times a month. Gotta look out for them because as you can see, if you wait too long, you'll be far worse than that guy. He got pretty lucky.

I don't get how people fear spiders. I like them. They're so cute ::'

Actually, when they say 'the average person eats 8 spiders every night', the way that

works is, most people eat 0, and there's one guy who eats 56 billion spiders per night,

so it averages out to 8 per.

My greatest ambition is to kill every member of the human race.

How to obliterate a spider, by Skully!

1) Steal your mums/sisters hairspray, cover the spider in it till it cannot move.

2) Get a can of deoderant and a lighter.

3) Light the lighter in the path of the deoderant you spray at the spider.

4) Burn baby, BURN! Your very own flamethrower!

We find these little buggers outside our house all the time

053005_redback.jpg

The female aussie Redback, they give quite a subtle, nasty bite, and even cause death, if the bite goes untreated.

They often make their web-nests around buildings, suck as in the corners and trusses of our shed, for example.

It also comes as a bit of a shock to realise the outdoor chair you've been sitting on has about 3 redback nests underneath the chair, where the legs join with the seat itself.

Hope I've made a few folk think twice about their holiday to Oz. :P

I've got a loft bed, I.E.: about 6 inchs away from my head/pillow is a ceiling fan. About one year ago, I wake up, sit up, and about 3 inches away from my face I see a large, hairy, red spider, maybe 1 1/2 or 2 inchs wide. Keep in mind, this was a few years back, I was maybe 12, and it's 6:00 am...

There is no meaning or truth in life but that which we create for ourselves.

Why weren't you able to flick it off? Were your hands bound to your chest for that first part?

Well I'm not particularly scared of spiders.

But yesterday I was sitting in my basement playing halo 3, when a big (1 inch +, that's big for where I live anyway.) spider dropped from the roof in front of the TV. It stopped there for a second, then came right toward me and went under the couch I was sitting on... I didn't have anything on hand to crush it, and I was bare foot. I pulled my feet up onto the couch for like half an hour after :P

Man that pic scared the hell outta me. I was just scrolling along, and that came on my scream and i swore and jumped outta my chair. I'm horrified of spiders. They are like nature's ninjas - they can get anywhere fast, without being heard.

Well said. Ninjas truly frighten me now - I'm deathly afraid of spiders, and if you somehow managed to associate spiders with cabbage or something, I'd turn deathly afraid of cabbage. I swear I would. Anything related to them sends me screaming.

I #@*$&^ HATE YOU!!!!! :XD: I was just about to go to bed!!!!!!!!!! :ohnoes: :ohnoes: :ohnoes: :uhh:

Me too. It's 4 AM, and you show me something like that? I'm going to have to kill you now.

It's a phobia, it's not supposed to be rational. You can't just tell your brain to stop being afraid.

Thank you so much for saying that, you've made me feel better. I may be THE arachnophobe of the century.

I'm near tears now with fright! Oh dearie me.... I'm not gonna sleep for HOURS, and it's already 4 AM. Come on... Why the hell am I even reading this topic? I seem to have some macabre obsession with my phobia, but I'm determined to read to whole thing...

Seriously, now, I just got poked by the corner of the notepad on my desk. That sent me backwards a couple feet. I'm frightened out of my freakin' wits right now, but I will finish the topic!

Okay, just finished reading the topic (I've been compiling this post as I went along). Now time for an apparently funny story about me seeing a large wolf spider.

9:30 at night. My friends are over. We're playing Dungeons and Dragons. Yes, you can flame me for that. However, we have our books strewn about on the floor. From under the couch comes rushing an inch-long wolf spider! Oh dear gods. I curled up into a ball on the couch, as tight as I could, and screamed at the top of my lungs, "Kill it! Kill it! Oh my god, please kill it!!!!" One of my friends killed it, and I refused to touch the book it had been killed with for hours afterwards. It was truly a seriously frightening experience. Anyways... That's my arachnophobe story.
