Dragonlordjl
Well, let's see: 1) The game has poor graphics and a rudimentary combat system, in comparison with most other MMORPGs. Ignorant people judge games first based on graphics. 2) RS has the worst community of any MMORPG on the web, primarily because the game is marketed towards prepubescent children. Many people believe that those who play in a game inhabited by mostly children are "nerds" who can't get any friends of their own age group. Again, it boils down to ignorance. 3) In order to get good at RS, you have to invest years in the game. Even with WoW, you can get a character to level 70 in a matter of a couple weeks without nolifing. This is actually a decent argument. RuneScape requires an ungodly amount of grinding, mainly because Jagex (in their infinite unwisdom) made everything at high levels highly impractical for leveling purposes, so people are forced to train skills using low-leveled abilities. The materials for most high leveled abilities in skills are so hard to obtain that it makes leveling using those abilities quite difficult. Therefore, high leveled miners powermine iron, lumberjacks chop willows, and farmers plant allotments (due to the growth time.) Oh, and as a closing note, pertaining to those people who actually play RS who call other people who play RS nerds... It's jealousy, simple as that. They feel inadequate about their in-game achievements so that compels them to put down someone who has a better character.
Dravenstormn
There is alot to be said on this subject. Mainly what you should ask yourself is what makes a person a "nerd"? A high IQ , good grades , playing a game on the PC ? And while your asking yourself this question ask yourself this what makes someone NOT a nerd? Lots of friends , partying , money ? In response to this I would have to say here is something I am sure not alot of you know. As I am sure most people here are up to date in music and have heard of the band Korn. Very popular group , LOADS of money , friends , fame etc right? Well here is something for you who think playing a PC game makes you a nerd. Jonathan Davis is an AVID player of WoW. Don't believe me here ya go. Does that make him a "nerd" ? Or does that make him someone who enjoys having fun? for those who think this is a fake and have MySpace check the link yourself. http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea ... jemathonical
Playing games for hours and hours generally makes you a 'nerd.' With Runescape you have to spend hours and hours playing and this apparently means that you have no life, no friends. The graphics aren't the best. It is a single player game so you can't play with friends while being in the same room like with a playstation or Xbox. ^Sir Jem 05-The Bunny Drinking Blog?^ Click it! You don't have to devote 'hours and hours' of time to Runescape, hell, when I used to play, it was around half an hour averaged a day, and I still got called a nerd, no-life, etc. The other points in the post are valid, though, and I agree with them. The 'hours and hours' is just a stereotype again, I suppose, like "Why do you spend so much time on that stupid game, nerd." :? sleep like dead men wake up like dead men

Armadyllo
If I played basketball all afternoon with my friends, joined a basketball team, stuck posters of Michael Jordan on my wall, dreamt of becoming a major-league basketball star, etc., I'd be seen having as a healthy interest in sports. If I played RuneScape all afternoon interacting with my friends, joined a clan, bought the RS poster, dreamt of getting a job with Jagex to help improve the game, etc., I'd be called a nerd. Of course, the exercise of the basketball would probably do me good, and I really prefer interacting with people face-to-face rather than over the net. On the other hand, RS fans seldom go ape and trash streets, whereas sports fans have been known to do this sort of thing! :-P
pati
I think the only people that can answer this question are people who say the rs is a nerd game :) . I also don't see the problem with no-life, what's so bad about it? If I want to play 14 hours a day then that's my decision. It's my life, other people shouldn't complain about MY life. Einstein was also a no-life. Just sitting every day in his room developing theories. Did people say he was a no-life? Ofcours not. New almost everyone admires Einsteins works, just like I admire zezimas work. Computers will never be above humans because we made them. That's what monkeys used to say about us. Dystopia
Because WoW has better graphics. Java games are for geeks. [/sarcasm] Because people who call us nerds can't be better than us at RuneScape, so they try to be better than us in real life. Too bad we don't have an ignore list there. :P And because they said so. Thats the fricken reason why people think rs is filled with nerds. Sy_Accursed
Anything in life that requires a bit of time, dedication and thought is considered nerdy by thoose kind of people. It's a fact of life. They just want to mash buttons, hence why they go on to fail their education and work in call centres, fast food joints or office workers for the rest of thier days then moan about how society is keeping them down. While really its because they are too self-invovled to see its their own flaw. Personally I'd rather be a "nerd" and achieve great things (not necessarily fame worthy things or uber riches, but ya know) than be "cool" and fail everything Operation Gold Sparkles :: Chompy Kills :: Full Profound :: Champions :: Barbarian Notes :: Champions Tackle Box :: MA RewardsDragonkin Journals :: Ports Stories :: Elder Chronicles :: Boss Slayer :: Penance King :: Kal'gerion Titles :: Gold Statue
123neopet
They call us nerds because that's what they do. I find at my school it's generally not the jocks/cheerleaders that are the worst offenders of this (although they do it too) but rather the people who seem to be complete misfits. (I.E. bad at sports, not overly intelligent, not musicly inclined etc.) Also, I find almost EVERYBODY at school has played runescape at some time or plays WoW. So if you bring up the topic around someone and they say "Yeah, well I had a level 60 character with 500 total level" and you respond with, "Cool, my guy is level 80 with 1317 total level" the inevitable reply is, "Yeah, but I have a life, unlike you." 'nuff said. P2P forever!... Or at least 'til <insert excuse here> happens98% of people have signatures with made up statistics in them. SwreeTak
I think that many people thinks that RS is a to slow game with to bad graphics. Also, there is no cheats for it. You need to have patience to be able to become good at it. These are the main reasons, according to me, why some people says that RS is a game for nerds. monkeyboo2
Breaking stereotypes isn't easy. I doubt RS will ever break its stereotype (of the player) because people just don't listen. Anyway, i'm not bothered anymore what ppl think. Ppl don't really care what u do/play; I just care that i do something well. \ Yeah...Some people just go out of their way to ruin other peoples fun.Sounds like Jagex to me... killjoyfuly
First, it's not an FPS. Second, it's time-consuming. I think that people are just too lazy to work for their levels and prefer games that have cheat codes. They're very smart for not choosing a game where you have to work for levels. Why should you work in a game? Jagex needs to make RS a bit less grind-based and add some more (challenging) quests (that... actually take skill) with nice XP rewards. ALL rpgs are grind games its what keeps you playing if it wasnt for the grind id have goy bored a LONG time ago ot: it because the game isnt a "oool game" and the belive that noone who plays can have any soical skills at all what the forget though is that just becasue its a game bassed on lvls its no less chalnging than fear or some other fps (in fact imo its more chalanging) so meh its thir choic we can all lugth at them in 10 years tim when we are rich :)
Lady_Shahdie
Though I hate stereotypes...it may exist because RuneScape is a very stat heavy game. Somehow the action genre with mindless gore and weapons seems to be the popular kind of computer/video game now adays. It gives the instant gratification that they achieved an objective of total annihilation within 1-5 minutes while RuneScape takes much longer to achieve gratifying goals. Personally I like the kind of thought and dedication RuneScape takes :. ~Retired 13-July-2010~Thanks for the great memories folks :).
Saru Inc
Not sure lol, my friend started talking about it and said "do you play Rs?" I said "yea :) " then another person at the lunch table is like "Huh? Sam you don't look like a nerd and thats such a (Insert explicit words) nerdy game my little bro plays it and he is nine." I'm not sure, maybe because it has a younger group of players, and people just call it nerdy because there are no guns, only swords and bow and arrows. Sorta geeky-animr kind of. Just speculation. Pietropaoli
I think that people are just too lazy to work for their levels and prefer games that have cheat codes. ? Lazy? You sit on ur chair and type and move ur mousey around. I don't think their lazy, they probably just think its just a waste of time. Justin_Jgh
Many people have said this. I'm sure that you have witnessed it yourself. I think that people are just too lazy to work for their levels and prefer games that have cheat codes. What do you think? It's not.
